Anyone scared about what Andy Burnham will do to government departments

he wants to move jobs out of london and also reorganise departments, it seems like a lot of jobs will be lost in the civil service.

Sounds like business as usual for my department then, we're already having massive cuts to staff.

MissCharlotteLutterell · 29/06/2026 21:24

Moving out of London and fewer civil servants has been government policy for decades. The first has happened quite a bit already; the second not so much.

Imicola · 29/06/2026 21:24

And moving jobs out of London has been going on for years.

Not scared at all - good to have a non-London centric prime minister considering the interests of the rest of the UK

MaryBennetsGlasses · 29/06/2026 21:26

It’s a great idea. I’m all for it

Whataflippincircus · 29/06/2026 21:27

It’s about time we had an actual leader with some fresh ideas.

Yesterdayoho · 29/06/2026 21:29

Good 👍🏻

PassMeTheCookies · 29/06/2026 21:30

Not in the slightest. I work for one of the government departments, outside of London, he’s been supporting for many years. He’s been a driving force in our success and he’s very passionate about levelling up the rest of the country. I think he do a lot of good for all of the country, rather than just London for a change.

JacknDiane · 29/06/2026 21:30

I hope hes strong enough to bollock the right wing media when thry start shit stirring.

But not purely focused on the North. The north/south divide is mentioned all the time. By this I can only assume north/south east divide is meant. The south west is a forgotten area of
the country, particularly west of Bristol

BoredZelda · 29/06/2026 21:32

Jeez oh - another post slagging off Burnham. It’s a wonder so many Mumsnetters have a problem with him. Particularly those with only a handful of posts, none of which are parenting related. 🤷‍♀️

Desperatelyseekinglazysusan · 29/06/2026 21:33

Surely it will only take a few years for us Londoners to tame the savages? First we could show them pictures of things like buildings and desks and how they could be nice and warm if only they stopped tilling the land with their horse and carts. We could discourage them from getting the kids to sell matches on street corners by showing them a Health and Safety at work video, then it's just a short hop to spreadsheets and Teams meetings...

As mayor of GMCA he worked really well with the CS and Agencies. He leveraged in their expertise to deliver local priorities. He understood the limitations for the CS working under a government of a different colour and took the lead in making the political point leaving the CS to deliver.

caringcarer · 29/06/2026 21:44

The civil service is very over bloated. We can't afford all the pensions contributions at over 25 percent employers contributions. We need to trim CS service back to similar numbers as to before COVID.

Blarn · 29/06/2026 21:58

Loads of jobs are outside Westminster now. And every new leader comes in and makes changes to the civil service, its never surprising.

You mean all the extra civil servants doing the additional work created by Brexit?
So you're in favour of reversing Brexit and rejoining the EU?

I can only pray that this extends up proper north to us proper savages in Scotland…
we may even get that there artificial light stuff… you know, elek-trickery?
we can only hope that that the denizens of London will be bountiful to us in their sorrows

ForPearlViper · 29/06/2026 22:03

My sister was involved in a major project to move to move civil servants out of London over 30 years ago. Let's hope it sticks this time.

CloudyWithAChanceOfCustard · 29/06/2026 22:22

There’s a whole country to fill with government departments OP…you know, other than London! 🤦‍♀️

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 29/06/2026 22:41

There are a lot of civil servants outside of London! Moving jobs to other cities and sharing the wealth is no bad thing

Kirschcherries · 01/07/2026 21:51

According to the latest published CS Statistics 2025 there are 435,285 Civil Servants in England. Of these 105,575 are based on London. So 75% of CS jobs in England are not based in London.

The CS has always expanded and contracted depending on gmt policy. As pp said there has for decades been a push to move jobs out of London.
