Is there life after dismissal?

Having to be very vague
Are their any stories of someone being dismissed in a manner that might have to be mentioned to future employers?
(genuine mistake) (education sector)
Mentally doing quite badly atm feeling like my life is over…

Yes go get some careers advice to help you make a plan but there is always a way forward and this is just a job it is not who you are as a person, don’t make it that.

Helplessandheartbroke · 09/03/2026 18:51

Sorry youre struggling op. A very close family member was recently dismissed (genuine misunderstanding) and felt very low. Has since got a new job earning much more money. Youll be ok. Good luck

Will it impact your DBS?

What being dismissed?! If OP had done something illegal don’t you think she would’ve led with that?

im so sorry OP. Very scary and stressful. It happens more often than you think- think of all the people HR are dismissing every day, they all do go somewhere even if it’s initially hard/ disappointing.

one day this will just be a bad memory

scant detail provided…. only that dismissed from education.
fair question

Simplestars · 09/03/2026 19:03

What sort of error was it?
Financial?
impact on a welfare of a child?

TheNaturalBronde · 09/03/2026 19:17

Was an issue regarding following policy on the behaviour of another, can’t say anymore.
Genuine mistake in hindsight and all that…
wont affect dbs but could affect references.

Employers must only confirm start date/ finish date as reference. Education is a large community, so news may get to potential employers. Are you in a union? Have you sought advice?

ladyamy · 09/03/2026 19:24

Depending on your subject, you could offer tutoring?

Must have been exceptionally serious.

No warning just immediately fired?

TheNaturalBronde · 09/03/2026 19:33

Not really imo, but i was on
Probation so no policy precedure required, it wasn’t very fair in comparison to other situations I’ve seen play out but that’s just my personal view no bearing on the situation at hand.

Ah ok…. So during probation. Do you even need to mention it on your cv?

Chicagolove · 09/03/2026 19:39

Were you given a chance or literally frog marched off premises?

TheNaturalBronde · 09/03/2026 19:39

I’m not sure actually you raise a good point I did have a contract so possibly

It’s so obvious posters are just desperate for the sordid details. Give the poor woman a break.

No chance, no warning or disciplinary

it was said to me if I had been there a no. of years policy would have had to be followed, but not with me being on P, I was just asked to sort my travel in the room not escorted out.

You were on probation.
I wouldn’t mention it on my cv

Thankyou , even on an anonymous forum law has to be followed, details vague etc.

This is so true Op. As hard as it seems, you will be ok. Just keep taking deep breaths, one day at a time. Good luck.

I know it’s hard & feels very tough right now, but I promise you will be ok, you just need to ride it out. There is absolutely life after dismissal.

SuperMagicHappyForest · 09/03/2026 21:31

Sounds like you also have a settlement agreement if you’re talking about the law having to be followed so you don’t talk about it…?

do you need them for a reference? If there was a settlement did you negotiate what that was going to say? but how you’ve described it (I’m not interested in what happened to get you to this position btw) it sounds as if you were let go with immediate effect.

clearly if you any future employer will ask about breaks in you cv and work history, so you may come unstuck if you don’t declare it. Also were you let go for gross misconduct (termination immediately which could be considered a disciplinary) or asked to part ways immediately as you were on probation. If it is the later you haven’t actually been through a disciplinary procedure so I’m not sure if they could raise it in a reference (they must be factual).

if in education what is the policy on references? Many just give facts - yes worked here, sickness in last 12 months, disciplinary/capability with little else - possibly reason for leaving.

but go find a good careers advisor who know the law (rather than a life coach)

Was it the teacher probation year in scotland you’re referring to?

TheFallenMadonna · 09/03/2026 21:38

If you are planning on staying in education (schools) you can't leave the employment out, and references will be more detailed than confirming start and end date. If it is something that calls into question your fitness for working with children (I'm not saying it is), it will be asked about.
