What is your job title and how much do you earn?

As per title. What do you do and how much do you get paid?

I'll go first; SAHM. £0 pa.

I have a degree in Psychology, but I have never done anything with it as I fell pregnant not long after graduating. But soon, ill have enough time to go back to work full time and I honestly cant wait! I just feel at this point in my life im not sure if I want to pursue a career directly related to my degree.

So, i'm asking you fellow mumsnetters what you do, so I can get a feel of whats out there with accurate salary / hourly rate reflections.

If anyone also has any advice on what other things I could do with my degree, id be very appreciative! I have heard a lot about recruitment / HR roles being fond of Psychology graduates, but job advertisements for those roles always require experience. I also graduated in 2018 which does NOT work well in my favour, but a degree is a degree and im sure it'll help with some roles (or at least I hope so lol).

Thanks!

Press & PR Manager. £58k + 10pc annual bonus (most years anyway!)

PhilOPastry62 · 12/02/2026 23:02

My job title's HR Partner, but that doesn't tell you much about what I actually do - I look after early career staff & manage their training & development. It's an enjoyable job. I've just gone part-time as I'm heading towards retirement, so I'm on just over £37k, but last year I was on just over £47k full-time.

What type of company was it? Was it easy to get the junior role?

Finance company, London based. Yes, easy to get, it was through office angels, interviewed and offered job on same day.

do you mind me asking how you do this? I have a PhD but for various reasons dont want to apply for jobs based in one university.

I ahd been thinking about doing tutoring work for undergrads and postgrads. Are you signed on with agencies?

I do some work for agencies. I'm very saleable because I'm a qualified & experienced teacher and examiner of a whole raft of exams and curriculums. When work starts to drop off a bit, I Google '(insert country) tutoring agencies' and do an email shot to a few. The majority only give me a couple of students, but every now and then I hit on one with loads of work.

Around £12.50ph (off the top off my head I can't remember the exact rate as I think we may have just had a partial small pay rise 🤔)

I have been in the business for about 30 years. I am fucking good at what I do. I retired last May and was head hunted in November so am re-joining the workers next week.

How does one become a business analyst and what do you do in your job? What are the skills they look for in BA? Is it fun?

eBay seller varies but the average last 3 years is £85k

Maths related job (not accountancy), with an MSc qualification, work 0.8FTE for 60k. Have 15+ years of experience in this field. I'm home based and I don't get a full day off, so I do a mix of long days and some shorter days. I probably would prefer a full day off, but current set-up gives me the flexibility to do all/almost all the school pick-ups and also drop-off at after school activities when needed. My kids are 10+ so they can entertain themselves once home when I need to go back to work.

thank you so much for replying. the work I would be able to do would be very different as im not a qualified teacher or examiner so couldnt teach under 18s. and I imagine there are more opportunities for that. the kind of thing I could offer is coaching undergrads and postgrads through research projects like dissertations or PhD research problems. I will have to look into it to see if it is viable. I finished my phd and did exceptionally well but my whole world fell apart when I submitted my phd and went into a horrific psychosis. that was nine years ago so I am thinking of trying to get back into some work somehow. im dependent on my husabnd at the moment and our marriage is in a terribel place becasue he was partly the cause of the stress that caused my psychosis.

Whooo · 12/02/2026 23:09

My package is around £130k within a digital field. I’m in my 20s. Whilst I previously studied psychology I think it’s a dead degree, and given you haven’t worked, you aren’t going to get much interest off the back of it.

I personally took another degree, utilising maths. I’m sort of lucky because my field has obviously been changed by AI but more so in a positive way in terms of career progression.

There could well be a market, for overseas students in the UK who need support. It could be a positive that you'd work with over 18s because there could be issues with you not having a DBS with under 18s.

I would start by online searching to see if there are agencies offering these types of services. Because they will only exist if there is a market for it.

Update your LinkedIn too. Set it up as an advert almost and set it as 'Open to Work'. I get enquiries via LI at times.

thank you. yes - overseas students may need a lot of support. I have worked as a tutor/lecturer in a university befroe.

I do think there are agencies that offer this kind of thing.

im in two minds as it may be too triggering fro me - my life basically became a living hell after the psychosis becasue of so many things that happened.

can I ask you how many students you need to earn the amount you do?

Wow - that is a massive question.

Is it fun - yes I love the job. My role is to implement systems and make it better for the people using them.

How did I get into it - I started as a cobol programmer (back in 1985), prior to that I worked as a “user” of systems. I used my experience of both to reinvent myself as someone who understood what the business wanted and what the technical restraints were.

And from that I made a career.

Career highlights include, saving one company £17m per year on credit card chargebacks and fines.
Saving one credit card company increasing their fraud by 100% by digging my heels in and identifying how much the increase fraud would affect the business if they implemented the processes they wanted
These are just a few examples of why I am worth the money. Can I also point out that I left school @ 16, and my first job was as an invoice typist paying £18 per week, take home £15.00 and I gave my parents £5.00 per week for keep.

I have worked really hard to get where I am, and deserve every penny

I have around 30 students but I don't teach them all every week. In the past I've had less and they had regular, weekly lessons. But now, one of the agencies I work for arranges their students lessons and there are always between 5 & 10 of them not having a lesson that particular week. There are busier times of year, leading up to exams. But there are also dead times too.

It isn't my preferred work. But like you, I have a reason for needing to be flexible and work from home.

2018 which is why I feel a bit set back 😬 just looking for an entry role to get my foot in the door then hopefully progress, just at a loss of which field to even go into. Im looking to make a decent wage eventually, expecting it to be fairly low to begin with.

Do you have any suggestions? Recruitment seems to be the most likely option from what ive seen googling about, but a lot of people tell me its more of a party role if that makes sense, which really puts me off lol. Any suggestions appreciated!

Okay so you’re no older than 30. That’s YOUNG. There’s no career you can’t get into because of age / time. Think about what interests you and what you hope to earn and go from there. You may need to do extra qualifications, but make sure they’re value-add and will actually boost your earning potential.

I was 'Operational Programme Manager' for a national cancer screening programme, didn't get paid anywhere near enough for the stress I endured all day, every day - got burnt out & I'm now 'Sausage Wanger Expert' (*waitress) covering breakfast shifts in a hotel for minimum wage. I've never been happier 🥰

That sounds decent, how many hours do you work specifically? I feel my work experience that I do have would be more suitable for a role like this one. Thank you!

40hrs a week, lunches and breaks paid too

to be honest I disagree. 20s are young but it’s not ideal to be job hunting nearing 30 with no work experience, that can make it difficult to commence a career. In theory, yes - any job is available and in your gift to apply for. In practice, you’re going to have a hard time getting to interview stage and being competitive with other candidates. Your career to date is going to be compared to others in a sift.

I’m in my 20s and in my experience, no employer teaches you how to do your job - you’re expected to hit the ground running so that makes it harder to secure your first job as expectations are high.
