Excuse needed for long sickness..

Please don't judge, I already feel bad enough 😔. I need to be off from early June to early September.
Plausible reason suggestions needed please.
I feel guilty but it's circumstances out of my control that mean I need the time off. Don't want to reveal as might be outing.
Big public sector worker.. Months of being overworked and stressed. Curre doing the work of 3 people, not sustainable long term. I'm burning out.
Stress a plausible reason for 3 months off? Any other ideas? I do have a chronic physical health condition, would it be best to use that?

@Miolo it's not being unkind to say that what you're suggesting is totally out of order. Current stress is nothing to do with a proposed 3 month absence in 5/6 months time. You should request compassionate leave if that is the situation which probably won't be paid. Use some annual leave too. But if you falsely represent time off thar risks being gross misconduct with immediate dismissal.

MissMoneyFairy · 26/01/2026 17:16

Why june to September? Why not now if you're feeling burnt out.. what's the real reason, can you be honest instead and use annual leave and negotiate unpaid leave instead of lying.

christmastrain · 26/01/2026 17:30

if you are struggling then call in sick, if its mental health then say, expect weekly calls, possible home visits and potentially being called to a Occ Health appointment to support you in your recovery. The same goes for your health condition. However saying please don't judge doesn't mean we won't judge, lying, leaving your colleagues with your work load isn't right. Tell the truth, why should you get paid when you are not ill. If I was your colleague and found out that you were lying i would report it, its theft at the end of the day. There are lots of policies in place to support people who require time off work, use them.

Changename12 · 26/01/2026 17:33

If you genuinely have stress then go to your GP. I don’t think any GP will sign you off for that specific amount of time. Not all in one go. They will need to see you again. GPs now do not necessarily sign people off work for mental health conditions as sometimes it is better to carry on working. GPs are not stupid and are used to people turning up at the start of the school summer holidays to be signed off for a few weeks with stress.

sparrowhawkhere · 26/01/2026 17:34

Your colleagues are the ones who will have leave cancelled, will have to cover you etc. feel sorry for them ☹️

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 26/01/2026 17:34

To sick or just fancy a long break?

Hundslappadrifa · 26/01/2026 17:35

What if everyone else needs the whole of the summer holidays off too? Pulling a 3 month sickie is a terrible work ethic, unless you really are ill?

ThejoyofNC · 26/01/2026 17:37

How do you seriously come online for advice on how to defraud your employer?

Miranda65 · 26/01/2026 17:38

You can't know in January that you "will be sick" from June to September. So the implication is that you intend to use sick leave as an excuse for taking time off work for some other reason. I appreciate that we don't know all the details, but that sounds potentially fraudulent. If you're genuinely sick now, then get the doctor to sign you off. That's it, because you have no idea how you will be in June.

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 26/01/2026 17:38

Yeah, this looks like school holidays to me too.

You’re either sick or you’re not. Go off now if you’re that poorly. You’ll be expected to provide regular sick notes.

fluffiphlox · 26/01/2026 17:38

I think you have to ask for unpaid leave.

Scarydinosaurs · 26/01/2026 17:39

Lying will only make you more unhappy. Be honest.

Reassurancells · 26/01/2026 17:39

That would be fraud and gross misconduct surely?

ThejoyofNC · 26/01/2026 17:45

Yes and she's not a very smart criminal if she's discussing her crimes online.

JLou08 · 26/01/2026 17:47

You need a sick note to be off sick that long, so as well as convincing your employer and GP you're ill when you're not, you will need the GP to agree that you should be off work for 3 months. I have known someone have the GP refuse any more sick notes after 4 weeks, they told the person it won't be beneficial to their health to be off longer.
I'd imagine 3 months will trigger sickness policies and involve back to work interview and occupational health too.
You'd be best just being upfront with work now so they can plan for you to be off. If you share the real reason people may be able to advise you on your rights and the options available.

Capitalcity · 26/01/2026 17:52

In other words you need to cover the school holidays. Think of the others in the team that might have their annual leave refused because there’s not enough cover. I’d be really pissed off if you did this and I was your manager or colleague. They will know, you’ll be seen out and about or people will contact you as they’ll want to know how you are. In my place after 4 weeks you’ll be referred to occ health so you’ll have to come into meetings at that point

Keepingthingsinteresting · 26/01/2026 17:52

You will need a note form the GP so you can’t just make something up. You could style out stress I guess but it will look very odd.

It's made me quite angry really! I am planning to steal £2k+ for the next 3 months - its very important! 🤔 But hoping the OP comes back as now wondering what it can be.

auserna · 26/01/2026 17:55

ThePure · 26/01/2026 15:26

I keep thinking what it could be
cosmetic surgery?
got selected for a reality TV show?

Reality TV show would only work if no-one at the OP's work watches telly!

abathofmilkwithladydi · 26/01/2026 17:58

Surely you’ll need to provide a sick note?!

BotterMon · 26/01/2026 18:01

Just take unpaid leave if you need it. Don't be a dick.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 26/01/2026 18:02

You can't bank sick leave for future use! If you're too stressed to work now, then you see your GP asap. You can't put it in your back pocket for a time when it would be more convenient to be stressed.

MissCooCooMcgoo · 26/01/2026 18:06

Bet she's booked a turkey sleeve!

thesandwich · 26/01/2026 18:07

Take unpaid leave/ use holiday.

It's stress and it's not an excuse.

Stress causes physical problems eventually. You also have a legit diagnosis.

I don't know what the significance of June-Sept comes in, but that's none of my business. No job is worth it, it's really not ❤
