Already feel sick about work on Monday

youcanstayhere · 31/12/2025 16:39

It always happens, halfway through a holiday I just dread going back.

I know the obvious answer is to find a new job but for a myriad of reasons that’s difficult. Also I do feel like it’s just the industry I work in.

Anyone else feeling sick about it?

Yep. Although tbh it’s not the teaching part that I’m dreading. It’s the unmanageable workload, early starts and late finishes and utter relentlessness of the weeks that I feel sick about.

And a 7 week half term!

Discoprincess6 · 01/01/2026 19:50

I was back Tuesday. All ok. But I’m dreading Monday for when my colleague is back as she non stop moans. Won’t take no for an answer when I say I’m busy so I can’t talk.

Donttellhim · 01/01/2026 20:00

I am a Social Worker and I feel your pain. It’s not that easy to just flip jobs. Public sector workers have it bad no matter what anyone else says. I worked on Wednesday and I was crying in the first hour and I’m the team manager, fortunately I was at home, so no one knew….but I bet I wasn’t the only one in my team to cry this week and I doubt you will be the only one in your school who feels utterly spent.

You will make it through though, we always do.

fishfingerbutty · 01/01/2026 20:16

Aren't you only back for a few weeks, and you're off again, though?

IDontHateRainbows · 01/01/2026 20:19

I worked this week, from home, its been absolutely brilliant for easing back in when things are quiet and I've not used up all my annual leave, so I would definitely recommend working twixmas week to those in the kind of jobs where you can take it a bit easier that week/ wfh i know not everyone can tho.

MerryPlayer · 01/01/2026 20:19

My anxiety is through the roof at the thought of going back tomorrow. I don’t hate the job itself, more the toxic environment, my boss is the most difficult, unreasonable man I’ve ever met, nothing you do is ever good enough and his expectations are ridiculous. I’m on minimum wage and have had to train 2 new members of staff while trying to juggle my own duties, it’s impossible but I’m constantly being treated like I’m incompetent. I’ve applied for different jobs but there’s very little out there atm. 😢

I’m due back on Monday after 5 months off due to Cancer. I went back for a bit in that 5 months but was signed off again as I struggled to cope. Absolutely dreading 9am on Monday.

Has your occupational health dept arranged for a phased return? Full time after five months of sick leave seems rather harsh

Muchtoomuchtodo · 01/01/2026 21:08

Sorry you’re feeling like this.

I can’t relate.

If you swap jobs to one where you’re lucky to have Christmas or New Year off, let alone the days inbetween you’ll instantly fix this problem.

user1496146479 · 01/01/2026 21:15

Not a teacher, still also dreading going back. Getting it over with tomorrow to ease back in….. maybe

Happyasapiginmuck1 · 01/01/2026 21:17

I used to when I worked in the NHS, but not anymore. I left and I'm self-employed and it was the best decision I ever made. I look forward to work now!

Moll2020 · 01/01/2026 21:21

I’m absolutely dreading going back to work, I’ve totally lost interest in my job, I’m 60 next year, I just want to retire, walk my dog & help look after my grandchildren & elderly parents.

LilySLE · 01/01/2026 21:26

I’m so sorry to read all the messages from teachers who are dreading going back. I have one child in primary and one in secondary, and am also a school governor. Please can I just say thank you for all that you do. I know you work so hard. I also know that many parents and children do not appreciate this - but some of us do!

AlleycatMarie · 01/01/2026 21:31

I used to be a teacher OP and the back-to-school dread was awful. I changed career!

Gcn · 01/01/2026 21:32

Me too. Before Christmas was awful. I've had a bad year personally and have never felt so excluded in work. Not being invited to nights out, not being included in team pot luck/secret santa and just generally feeling like shit.

I'm the senior manager - so understand the lack of invite to night out to some extent, but was really hurt by the other stuff. I bought whole team little gifts, and didn't even get a card. Has totally shook me and I don't want to go back.

PolarCrane · 01/01/2026 21:33

I imagine everyone feels the same dread. I work in the City. I just try to avoid thinking about it.

notnorman · 01/01/2026 21:35

I spent 20 years as a teacher feeling like that every Sunday.

I often wonder was the dread only there because teachers have such long breaks? Like it’s exacerbated the issue as such?…I don’t mind going back on a normal Monday. But don’t get me wrong I don’t dread it as much going back to work now but I do when I’ve had a long time off! 🤣

Mrsnothingthanks · 01/01/2026 21:38

@fishfingerbutty Eh? What schools are only in for a two-week term?!!! Perhaps you could do with some maths lessons? 😀

Mrsnothingthanks · 01/01/2026 21:40

@LookForTheLiight Have you looked into tutoring? It's what I do now after 20 years of primary teaching. Best decision I ever made to leave.

youcanstayhere · 31/12/2025 19:24

How did you guess 😩

I knew you were a teacher as soon as I saw this post.
I used to throw up at the end of every holiday.
I got out 2 Christmases ago and got a new job. Resigned with no job to go to and told myself any job would do. The best thing I ever did.
Start your exit plan. Work out your bottom line and don’t be scared. Xxxx

How did you guess 😩

Immediately i thought 'i bet she's actually teacher'

Takes one to know one

Me too 😫😫

RSSN · 01/01/2026 21:48

I did that this year again. Have worked up to and inbetween Christmas the last few years as we can work shorter days (4hrs instead of 8) but without using up annual leave) . Last few years it was dead and it was grand but this year was very busy and I never felt so bad for my 5 year old..Never again. I've put in for annual leave for next year already!

Switcher · 01/01/2026 21:50

Yeah. I'm not a teacher and am absolutely dreading it. It'll be insanely busy, I'm not very good at it, hate my colleagues and if I fuck it up I get fired and we have no income.

I think you’ve misunderstood. Although if you’d like a job where you can definitely get Christmas and new year off, then you could look into training as a teacher. Anyone on this thread complaining about their job and apparently envying mine is welcome to do that and I mean that. I’m happy to help.

As it is, I feel very anxious about going back. It isn’t driven in any way by logic and so can’t be driven away with ‘well another six weeks of work and I get another five days off’ - especially as my holidays are harder than term time. I just really am not enjoying it at all at the moment.

I think the break didn’t help! But then I used to also get the dread every Sunday 🤣 I have never worked as long hours as I did when I was a teacher and the weekends felt inadequate time to rest and recover! (I definitely still get dread in my job now after a holiday, even though I like what I do now!)
