Can I bring shepherd's pie to a work picky lunch?

I know this is an incredibly trivial question but I have an office "picky lunch" potluck coming up and everyone is else bringing bits like scotch eggs, mini pizzas, quiches etc would it it weird to bring shepherd's pie or steak pie as I quite fancy something warm? I'm not from the UK so this idea is still quite novel to me. Thanks!!

Would you be able to heat it up? I would just take in a cold pasta dish, personally.

Sillysoggyspaniel · 23/11/2025 15:01

Not really, mostly needs to be finger food if people aren't properly sat down with cutlery.

Wolfpa · 23/11/2025 15:01

It’s not really a picky meal unless you are going to do them in bite sized chunks

MakeMineADietCoke · 23/11/2025 15:02

No that would be a bit weird

FatLarrysBanned · 23/11/2025 15:02

Too messy for a picky lunch. Could you make some mini pies using Yorkshire puddings tins instead?

ArtTheClownIsNotAMime · 23/11/2025 15:02

No, too messy.

IAmKerplunk · 23/11/2025 15:03

If you want something warm could you bring in some precooked new potatoes that can be warmed in the microwave and smothered in butter? And make sure there are forks.

SparklyBrickViper · 23/11/2025 15:03

Picky usually means snacks like the ones you mentioned, so I wouldn’t take a shepherds pie. Reheating/keeping warm might be an issue and you need cutlery/plates etc.

When we used to to office “buffet” we stuck to things that were easy to eat and could be left out in the kitchen for the grazers.

Luxio · 23/11/2025 15:03

I wouldn't think so most pot luck picky lunches are normally cold finger food it really wouldn't work alongside crisps, sandwiches and cocktail sausages.

CoralPombear · 23/11/2025 15:04

Could you make mini pies or pasties or something instead and heat those up?

IAmKerplunk · 23/11/2025 15:05

Is there a microwave/oven at your work? Mini pies, potatoes, pigs in blankets? I like warm food too.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 23/11/2025 15:07

No, that’s not something you can socially pick at without everyone double dipping.

JudgeBread · 23/11/2025 15:07

You could do shepherds pie potato skins, they're a bit more "finger foodie" and suited to a picky lunch?

TheSpottedZebra · 23/11/2025 15:07

(Unless you're Irish) the idea of a non Brit coming to the UK and falling in love with shepherd's pie to the extent that you make one for an office picky buffet is hilarious!

bloodredfeaturewall · 23/11/2025 15:08

can you do them in muffin cases?

Wickedlittledancer · 23/11/2025 15:09

Not unless you can serve it hot, no.

GarlicHound · 23/11/2025 15:12

Cornish pasties are like shepherd's pie in a sturdy pastry case. They're best eaten hot but acceptable cold. They can be small (palm sized) for tidier eating while standing up.

Owly11 · 23/11/2025 15:15

'Picky' means finger food, so food you can eat with your fingers. So no, you won't be popular if you take shepherd's pie.

Yes, I was thinking exactly that.

And surely unless you work in a walk-in fridge people can go without warm food for one lunch?

Daytimetellyqueen · 23/11/2025 15:22

No - totally doesn’t work for a ‘picky’ lunch buffet.

MinnieCauldwell · 23/11/2025 15:26

If you have microwave, ready cooked meatballs like ikea

NuffSaidSam · 23/11/2025 15:29

No, Shepherds Pie isn't picky.

If you want something hot you could do sausage rolls/cheese and onion rolls, pasties of some kind, mini sausages, potato skins, pizza.

Shessweetbutapsycho · 23/11/2025 15:29

No

Monty34 · 23/11/2025 15:32

If you did you need to be able to transport it safely, reasonably quickly, well chilled.
And be able to reheat it. Consider if there be enough non paper plates and cutlery too.

BillieWiper · 23/11/2025 15:32

No as it's more like sit down meal food, not finger food.

Individual spanikopita, pizza rolls, falafels etc. stuff that's portable and not too sloppy or messy.
