My mum said I won't get a new job because my hair is a mess!

My contract role is coming to an end soon and I'm a bit of my own hairdresser! I tend to thin my own hair out, trim my fringe. I've made a dreadful mess of my fringe in that I've cut the sides of my fringe so that I've got a strip of fringe instead of a full fringe to extend out at the temples. It'll take 4-6 months to grow back again, but I raise my hands and own my mistake. However, my mum said, "You'll never get a job with hair like that. You look like you're from a council estate" 🤦 . What should I do? I tell my mum it'll grow again, but will it stop me getting a job?

How old are you? Book a hairdresser appointment and ask them to make it more presentable while it grows out.

Booklook · 12/11/2025 16:23

Your mum sounds a joy, but unfortunately we are judged on appearance everyday. I'd do what you can to get it more presentable.

Dartmoorcheffy · 12/11/2025 16:24

Use an alice band to keep your fringe back

NigelForage · 12/11/2025 16:34

God sake, sort your hair out

PInkyStarfish · 12/11/2025 16:37

Your mother’s bluntness is sound advice. Go and get your hair sorted out by a professional.

SmoothCollie · 12/11/2025 16:40

Your mum sounds terrible and classist, but FFS you need to see a hairdresser if you want to be taken seriously and look professional. You don't want people thinking 'liability who is insane enough to cut her own hair' when you turn up to interview.

PashaMinaMio · 12/11/2025 16:43

Mothers (some that is) usually know best.
Go get a professional cut & take it from there.
Good luck with the job hunt!

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 12/11/2025 16:47

She’s been blunt but truthful. She’s told you that you look a bit of a clip. Go to the hairdressers. Get them to create a cut that doesn’t look rubbish. And then stop cutting your own hair.

Prelim · 12/11/2025 16:53

Just pin it back until it grows.

WeepingAngelInTheTardis · 12/11/2025 16:59

Just pin it back, use an alice band or book a professional hair dressser appointment. She has a point.

weericky · 12/11/2025 17:01

What should you do? Use a hairband.

Use an alice band to keep your fringe back

This or nice clips or even just those regular kirby grips

Halfwaytheree · 12/11/2025 17:08

It sounds like your hair is particularly poorly cut although I can’t really visualise it. Can you just slick it back, or gel it down into a bun/pony? That would look professional and cover up the short hair at the front. Definitely don’t wear it down and loose if you have a dodgy cut, because yeah people will judge if it looks like you’ve been hacking it at with kitchen scissors at home.

Simonjt · 12/11/2025 17:12

We once interviewed someone who looked like she had randomly hacked at her hair with scissors, she had either straight hair or she had straightened it, very odd straggly ends despite being shoulder length, odd even layers and a fringe that was anything but straight. It was like Angelina Jolie in girl interrupted but worse. She didn’t get the job as it was a client facing job.

StewkeyBlue · 12/11/2025 17:17

The council estate but was out of order.

I am sure council tenants are as competent as everyone else in presenting themselves as well groomed and professional when needed.

You are clearly not a hairdresser of any kind.

Get help sorting this out.

tapaw · 12/11/2025 17:20

You could post a pic with your face blurred out. I'm sure someone on here will have some suggestions for you.

2GreatFatSquirrels · 12/11/2025 17:25

Just clip it back like a quiff.

AltitudeCheck · 12/11/2025 17:33

Please post a picture 😆 I have given myself serval dodgy hair cuts/ colours over the years. Side parting and an alice band or clip if you cant afford a clever cut to mask it!

ScrollingLeaves · 12/11/2025 17:34

Hillary Clinton:

“Your hair will send significant messages to those around you. What hopes and dreams you have for the world, but more, what hopes and dreams you have for your hair,” said Clinton. “Pay attention to your hair, because everyone else will.”

User312312 · 12/11/2025 17:37

Erm the same Hilary who said women worry far too much about appearance and it holds them back as men focus on the actual work?

But if your hair is bad enough it makes you look odd/unprofessional, get it fixed.

MrsPrendergast · 12/11/2025 17:38

Are you 10? Either use a hair band to keep your hair tidy and hide the mess. Or pay a visit to a professional hairdresser

@ScrollingLeaves thanks for that - too funny. That and the fleabag ‘if you want to change your life, change your LIFE!!’

RescueMeFromThisSilliness · 12/11/2025 17:42

Mothers are supposed to be their offspring's greatest advocate.

She, on the other hand, sounds like a right nasty piece of work.

lemonraspberry · 12/11/2025 17:45

Your mum has a point. If you cannot keep your hair presentable, clothes ironed and shoes polished how will you handle a job. See a hairdresser to sort out your hair.

RightOnTheEdge · 12/11/2025 17:47

I wouldn't listen to the advice of anyone who made that shitty council estate comment.
Can you afford to go to a hairdresser to get it sorted?
