Do you love your job?

I am early 50s and currently job hunting. Want to leave my current corporate job due to politics; however I think I am looking for the perfect job. Here are some of my requirements:

No corporate environment. Transparent and honest bosses
Nice colleagues, good working atmosphere, opportunity to socialise a bit
Interesting work but not too stressful or too much overtime
Dynamic and Vibrant. Not boring or slow pace
Hybrid, flexibility
Good salary and benefits
Convenient location
Medium size, not too large or too small
Varied role

Am I dreaming?

Do you enjoy your job? Are you passionate about it or is it just something you do to pay the bills?

Nope I hate it 😭.

DarkEyedSailor · 08/11/2025 21:00

I love it, I'm a school cook.

Sillysoggyspaniel · 08/11/2025 21:03

Sounds like you're describing a nice hobby club you're paid to do.

I'm self employed. I am very interested in what I do, but for me, once something is work and you have to do it it's just not as fun or engaging any more.

CaveMum · 08/11/2025 21:08

Love my job, I’ve been with the company 23 years so I must enjoy it!

The key reason I love my job is because it is built on a passion (horses), I’ve been lucky to find a job that enables me to indulge the passion whilst also giving me a career that I’ve built up to a high level and earning good money.

I’m very aware of how lucky I am.

SpottyAardvark · 08/11/2025 21:11

Good luck, OP. Let me know when you find it. I’ll apply too.

No, I don’t love my job. The only jobs I have ever loved were the bar jobs I did when I was a student. Getting paid to get pissed & have a laugh with my mates. On the guest list for the nightclubs, waved in & looked after by the bouncers. Being asked out by people so drunk they would have tried to get off with the coat stand. I loved every minute.

Then, you grow up & jobs come with responsibilities, pressures, deadlines, dickhead colleagues, budgets, targets, KPI’s politics & mountains of bullshit. That’s why they have to pay people a decent amount of money to do it. If it was nice & easy & fun they wouldn’t have to pay us to do it.

BitOutOfPractice · 08/11/2025 21:13

I love it. I work for myself so it ticks all your boxes.

I walk to work, I have no corporate structure or people to manage its interesting work. Very flexible hours (the boss is very understanding because it’s me!), I earn good money, and I work in a shared office with lovely people.

Would you consider going self employed?

I loved my job. I was a Social worker but in a children's home and I bloody loved it. Was there for 26 years (except when I did my social work degree).

2chocolateoranges · 08/11/2025 21:16

I love my job , but I do dislike aspects of it.

i work in early years, I love the children, the activities we do, the growth I see in each child and the fun we have.

however I dislike the paperwork , the lack of support for children with ASN, the expectations of some parents and the scrutiny we are under if a child accidentally hurts themselves in our care ( falling over and needing stitches in their chin, tripping and breaking a bone, these are all unavoidable accidents but staff are made to feel at fault for it all).

JudgeBread · 08/11/2025 21:18

I love my job but it's not for everyone, I work in fire control. Good money, good people, every day is interesting even the slow ones, amazing Work-Life balance with a 4 on 4 off shift pattern (and the lovely 20 day block of time off every summer). It can be stressful but it's mostly just interesting and the workload is never unmanageable.

I absolutely adore it, you'll pry the job from my cold dead hands.

GentlyGentlyOhDear · 08/11/2025 21:23

I love my job working with students and young people as a careers advisor. Particularly enjoy the buzz of a university setting and I have a lot of autonomy in my role due to the particular area I am in.
HE is a tricky place to be at the minute with the pressure of potential cuts, but I will be in the sector as long as I can.

It maybe a possibility; as long as I have an office to go to and people to talk to

I love my job. I’m a high school teacher. Apart from the (amazing) holidays, it’s totally inflexible. It’s utterly exhausting and can be very demanding. But it’s just magic and it’s my vocation. Beyond pros and cons, is there something your heart and guts just want to do?

RoseyLentil · 08/11/2025 21:34

I love my job and my sector. Been in my sector for over 30 years now. I started as a volunteer in a regional charity organisation when my part of the wider sector was in its infancy. As my sector has grown and matured I’ve been luck and have worked in public and private sector organisations and now I’m a specialist in my field and work at a global NGO. A lot of the opportunities I’ve had I’ve made myself so I’m really lucky.

goodnightssleepbenice · 08/11/2025 21:34

I absolutely love my job been doing it nearly 3 years and there hasn’t been one single day I haven’t wanted to go - it’s challenging , every day is different. I’m a GP receptionist on minimum wage .

Thank you.

You got me thinking, I think this what I should do, become self employed and get a few clients; manage my own time, etc. It wont be very difficult in terms of my career.

Being a single income household I need a good paying job so, no, I don't love my job. It's so full on that the days just blur together and go fast. I'm well paid but that does come at a price.

@GentlyGentlyOhDear this is so good to hear, I'm actually thinking of a change of career to be a Careers advisor. Any tips would be very welcome.

OP, Brave Starts (www.bravestarts.com/) was recommended to me on here. It's aimed at mid-career/ senior career changers. I've been finding it really helpful as I figure out what's next for me after taking voluntary redundancy last year (from a job that once upon a time I loved and thought I'd do forever, but - perhaps like all jobs? - eventually I fell out of love with it/ the sector changed).

I'm not affiliated with BS, by the way, but I've found the sessions really useful and it's helped me see work in a different way. There's none of that 'finding your dream job' nonsense, but rather a helpful framework to get you to identify what you do and don't want to do and in understanding how the world of work is changing. Was worth the £89 it cost me to sign up for a year!

No i dont like my job. Applying for new ones. Its a great job title and pay, but the company aren't using me/my skills. Im bored. Ive tried so hard to get more tasks/projects. Noone cares as they are all happy to coast! Im young and my caring responsibilities are more flexible now I need a challenge!!

RuncibleSpoons · 08/11/2025 21:53

I love working, more than my actual job. I have a great team and we get on really well and have lots of laughs.

I changed jobs recently from an extremely high pressure one. My new job is a complete doss, but the rest of the team think they’re really busy (they’re not), so I just agree with them and enjoy the relaxed pace.

SoftPillow · 08/11/2025 21:55

I love bits of my role, and dislike others. To your list:

  • No corporate environment. Honest bosses - mostly honest some totally dishonest, my role is very political, I like the fast pace and politics.
  • Nice colleagues, good working atmosphere, opportunity to socialise- colleagues are mostly nice, I don’t need to socialise with them after work
  • Interesting work but not too stressful or too much overtime - mostly interesting, also stressful, I work over my hours at my choice. I’ve not yet come across truly interesting work that finishes at 5pm on the dot.
  • Dynamic and Vibrant - Yes, but see above that for me vibrant = fast / demanding / political
  • Hybrid, flexibility - yes
  • Good salary and benefits. Salary is great, benefits ok.
  • Convenient location. Yes, very
  • Medium size, not too large or too small. Yes
  • Varied role. Yes
