How can I reply when my co-workers ask how much my car is?

I've been asking my co-workers lately what car makes they'd recommend. I bought a used car a few weeks ago and I should really let them know what I bought and that I bought one! However, I know they'll want to know how much I spent on it and I don't want to let them know and I don't have to tell them either! What can I say when they ask how much I spent? 🤷

Will they really ask? I can't imagine anyone asking that really, but I suppose it depends on what you've talked about with regards to it so far.

FatLarrysBanned · 15/06/2025 16:58

They'll see you've got a new car in the car park, why do you need to tell them?

If they ask how much just say "That's between me and the bank manager, how was your weekend/did you see that thing on TV last night/I hear Mary in Accounts had a fab holiday in Alicante, did you see the pics?"

Fratolish · 15/06/2025 16:58

You don't need to let them know. Just don't mention it unless they ask. Just give them a made up approximate figure if they ask. I'm not really sure why you wouldn't want to say though? If you tell them what you bought they'll probably have a rough idea of what it's worth anyway.

Yes, they're quite a forward bunch 🤦

Surely when you asked them for recommendations you talked about budget?

2024onwardsandup · 15/06/2025 16:59

If it’s just a further extension of the discussion about possible options I’d understand why they might ask.

different to being nosy when you just bought a new car

PlumpAndCircumstance · 15/06/2025 16:59

Just say “I feel I got a good deal, but don’t like discussing specifics’.

IDontHateRainbows · 15/06/2025 17:01

I always say 'prefer not to say!' in a lighthearted cheery tone in these types of situations.
Shuts the fuckers up!

Nearly50omg · 15/06/2025 17:03

None of their business! So say that to them or “thats a very personal question to ask someone!”

Marble10 · 15/06/2025 17:04

It’s not really hard to figure out a rough estimate of a car even if you don’t tell them.
If you are going to be that colleague - make sure you never ask anyone how much anything of theirs is

INeedAnotherName · 15/06/2025 17:16

Why wouldn't you tell them if they asked? Surely it's not that big a secret if you've already been discussing their cars and approximate budgets.

i am starting to wonder if I am the only person who doesn't actually care about talking money with other people, or is this yet another MN only thing like not answering the door??

I never ask anyone anything! 😉

Why do you have to tell them you've bought a car, especially if it was weeks ago. You don't owe them an update on everything you do

user1471867483 · 15/06/2025 17:20

Nope. Never.

There are several ways to handle this.
You can say

Too bloody much har har
Why do you need to know that?
I don't like talking about my finances
a random made up figure that's about right for a car
The truth
Deflect. Too much. I'll be living on beans on toast for months. How much did you pay for yours?

FinancialWhines · 15/06/2025 17:24

Unless you've bought a Ferrari and you're working as a cleaner then surely it won't be weird to tell them if they ask.

Wolmando · 15/06/2025 17:24

Do you think you paid over the odds and are embarrassed

Redglitter · 15/06/2025 17:24

I bought a new car recently and none of the incredibly nosey buggers I work with so much as mentioned the cost.

Wouldn't be hard to find online if they were that interested

Just dont mention you've bought one. They'll spot you in the car park eventually

Bisadino · 15/06/2025 17:24

I should really let them know what I bought and that I bought one!

No, you shouldn't.

Wolmando · 15/06/2025 17:26

No one will care really, they will probably say how lovely it is as people do but it's just a work colleagues car so doesn't affect them.

Icanttakethisanymore · 15/06/2025 17:27

It doesn’t matter if you tell them, if they are interested they can easily work it out.

Viviennemary · 15/06/2025 17:28

user1471867483 · 15/06/2025 16:58

Yes, they're quite a forward bunch 🤦

I agree. You are the one who told them about it and wanted advice.

Wolmando · 15/06/2025 17:30

This is a very odd thread

AhTheFuckening · 15/06/2025 17:35

Isn't it a bit meaningless now anyway? Some people might have less money but expensive cars through PCP / leasing / whatever, while others might have more money but cheaper cars that they've bought outright because they just don't value having expensive cars.

moose17 · 15/06/2025 17:36

Why does it matter if you tell your colleagues how much you paid for car? We’re talking about a car, not your life savings. This is a very odd thread
