A washing up rota at work. I don’t use anything.

Someone had set up a washing up rota at work and I don’t use a single item. Am I being unreasonable by saying no?

OP posts:

Nope. You are not at work to waste time doing other people’s dirty dishes. It’s a slippery slope to a cleaning toilets rota or a collecting/taking out the rubbish rota.

@AmelieSummer25 you crack on then. It's a bit weird that you think I'm trying to make you wash up dirty meat dishes. I promise you I'm not.

The OP asked a question and I said she should consider what her goal is in arguing this point. She might consider and conclude her goal is to not wash up, which is fine. If that's the most important thing to her, as it is to you. But she might have other goals, and it's always worth thinking about these things, rather than getting hung up on a petty point of principle.

I see lots of people on this thread marching off to HR in their minds. Maybe that's warranted, maybe it isn't. Only the OP really has the context here. I think it's ok to counsel her to look a little before she leaps.

It isn't a petty point of principle. The OP has been told to help clean up a mess that is nothing to do with her.

It's the equivalent of putting all the staff on a rota to clean the coffee machine in the meeting room when they only drink tea and don't go to meetings.

CatAsstrophe · 11/06/2025 17:35

A rota to wash up at work? It's not a house share with a chore rota.

People need to take responsibility for washing their own mugs/plates/cutlery at work.

OnePearlJoker · 11/06/2025 17:38

Who organised it? Was it a team member or management? I’d ask them to point out where in your contract does it state you do that. People are adults and can wash their own things.

CannotBeBothered2025 · 11/06/2025 17:39

I was put on a tea/coffee making rota at a previous job. I didn't drink either so I didn't benefit from it when it was other people's turn. So I made all the coffee's the same colour as the tea and I was very swiftly removed from the rota.

If you don't want to be on the rota, do an incredibly bad job the first couple of times and see if that works. Leave bubbles in all the mugs so everything tastes horrible perhaps.

Kelim · 11/06/2025 14:35

It's not really about being unreasonable or not. Consider, what is your goal?

Being a good team player, helping out, pitching in - these are all good ways to work well with others. What's the huge downside of washing up once in a while? After all, you are being paid to do it.

No where in my contract states that I need to take part in a washing up rota. I get paid to do my job. The lazy people can wash their own things.

BG2015 · 11/06/2025 17:50

Why can't grown adults wash their own things.

mangonut · 11/06/2025 17:51

Tinybirdie · 11/06/2025 14:44

Pick your battles and this ain't one. Roll up your sleeves and be a team player

Or the lazy shits who couldn’t be arsed to wash up after themselves could just do it? Instead of OP?

Simple solution is for workplace to remove any cutlery/crockery that they provide.

Then each person brings in their own and cleans it up.

If it hangs around for a few days then the cleaners should bin it as a health hazard.

I would not be washing up disgusting congealed food - I hate the smell of old food/unwashed dishes. I don't eat at work.

Also, when would I be doing this - in my break? Hell no. Otherwise strangely enough I am rather busy doing my actual job.

Yes this. Plus every plate/mug/ dish should be sharpied (or use nail varnish) with owner’s initials.
Anything left will be put (unwashed) in a cardboard box. After a week it will be thrown out.

FinancialWhines · 11/06/2025 18:00

Yanbu. Everyone should wash up their own stuff.

About a month ago our wellbeing team lead implemented a cleaning rota after more than a dozen people asked for it in an anonymous suggestion box.

Hardly anyone is doing it - I suspect the people who asked for it thought "someone else" not a particular someone, just not them, would do it. I have been doing my rota'd day but am increasingly resentful!

Please stop!

Then the lazy shits would only use mugs with someone elses initials instead. Why would they care.

Funnyduck60 · 11/06/2025 18:04

Oohso many mumsnetters too posh to wash a few cups! Never mind, the cleaner will do it even though its probably not her job to clean up after individuals either.

I kept my mug in my drawer or took it home if I was going on leave. We didn’t have space for loads of stuff anyway.

Or rather you are too lazy to clean up after yourself? Easier to let someone else do it for you.

RampantIvy · 11/06/2025 18:09

Why can't everyone just do their own? This is what we do at work.

PlayDoh135 · 11/06/2025 18:23

Weirdaf1 · 11/06/2025 14:44

I wouldn't do it if I didn't use any of the facilities. I go to work to get away from household drudgery. I have my own mug at work, wash it after use and keep it in my office.
Other people use several mugs a day and leave them in the sink, not my responsibility.

Same thing happened to me. People leaving the sink full of mouldy cups and bowls. I wouldn't do it.

I’m not too posh, I wash my own. I’m not paid to clean up after all the others who think they are too good to wash dishes. Why the hell should I? I’m not their mother!

Said by someone who probably uses stuff and leaves it for others to clean up. Bollocks is being expected to skivy after other staff anything to do with teamwork. In fact it’s the culprits who leave their dishes unwashed who aren’t the team players. I’m paid to look after the residents in my care NOT clean up after lazy staff who then bleat about teamwork when they get pulled up for it.

ClearHoldBuild · 11/06/2025 18:34

Every one else will probably ignore the rota else the team wouldn’t be in the position where a rota is necessary. The same people who roll their sleeves up and do it now will continue to do so and those who create the mess will carry on. I wouldn’t worry about it.

RosesAndHellebores · 11/06/2025 15:01

If everyone was on the rota, including the director - fine, but we work a hybrid pattern too and the whole thing would get confusing. It's a nightmare and the kitchen is awful.

I take a flask, a mug from home, a salad and cutlery. Take it all home with me. I don't go near the office kitchen.

Can we have a diagram of the salad with scale please

justasmalltownmum · 11/06/2025 20:04

Every should wash their own.

There's plenty of ways to be a team player & this ain't one.

Tinybirdie · 11/06/2025 21:50

No, I just like to be helpful and not the office bore who thinks washing a few cups is a hardship.
Same way I pay into the tea fund when I don't drink tea. And pay into a flower whip round when its a staff member I don't particularly care for. I like my workspace to be supportive, free from aggravation and a nice place in which to spend many hours of my life. It's nice to be nice as they say.
