Recording Teams Call

Any HR people around?

Just looking for some advice. A colleague of mine has voice recorded a Teams call between her and a senior HR manager (she is also in HR at team leader type level) and sent it to me in WhatsApp (my personal number). She recorded it on her personal mobile. This is not the first time.

I do know this is really wrong of her but I'm not really sure what to do. Speak up to my manager or just have a quiet word with her?

Sounds like a good opportunity for blackmail. Make a list of your demands and get planning.

JoyousPinkPeer · 14/04/2025 23:55

I'd ask her not to send me anything similar again.

Montea · 15/04/2025 00:01

Why would she sent it to you?
I record meetings without mentioning it but it’s for personal use, I don’t send it to anyone or do anything with it and Its because I have issues with my memory

Avidreader12 · 15/04/2025 07:14

Just delete it and if she says anything say you deleted it because you assumed she sent you it in error.

ScaryM0nster · 15/04/2025 07:16

Point out to her it’s not suitable behaviour, and you’d rather she didn’t do it, but if she is can she please not share it with you.

You can record on teams. It helpfully tells the people on the meeting you’re doing it.

Iudncuewbccgrcb · 15/04/2025 07:17

Why is she doing it?

You do know that if you're going to record a meeting you're obliged to tell people first. I can't remember why, GPDR probably.

TheStigarette · 15/04/2025 07:24

You have to tell people if they are being recorded. She's on very thin ice especially recording HR. Probably sackable.
Ask her not to involve you. You don't want to be culpable.

TheStigarette · 15/04/2025 07:24

And delete it immediately

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 15/04/2025 07:49

You need not to sit on this.
First of all I'd tell your line manager, and say you feel uncomfortable about it.
Don't delete it just yet, it's your evidence.
Discuss with your line manager what the next steps are. It'll be HR, but don't go direct or via your line manager?

letstrythatagain · 15/04/2025 07:49

Thanks all. She sent it to me to get an opinion on its content. The silly part of it all is that there is literally nothing in it that could cause any problems. It's a call between her and the HR manager ironing out a disagreement they had. Makes me incredibly uncomfortable but I don't want confrontation. I'll delete it and tell her not to send anything like that to me again.

This is what worries me. I'm now involved as it's on my personal device.

The first rule of jobs is protect yourself.

She shouldn’t have sent it to you, you have to report this. Unless she is going to pay your bills when it all comes out and you are guilty of gross misconduct?

Sorry just seen this comment. I'm in two minds now.

I think @IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads is right. Keep it and report

Pay my bills? She doesn't as in she's not particularly senior.

In the UK, you do not legally have to tell anyone you are recording them if the recording is for your personal use. It's a one party consent matters

However when you begin sharing it or using it that becomes a different matter.

Avidreader12 · 15/04/2025 07:56

It sounds like she’s trying to cause trouble and drag you into it to validate her points. Just delete and don’t give an opinion.

She means if you get fired, is she gonna pay your bills for dragging you into it.m

You can only record on Teams if you have the set up for it. Most companies will limit recording rights because a lot of people, despite training, fail to understand data protection implications and the sheer size of the files created.

Have a ‘quiet word’ and tell her this, OP. Assume she acted in ignorance. Tell her you’re deleting the recording, won’t discuss it further and that she shouldn’t send recordings made without consent to you or anyone else in future.

RockahulaRocks · 15/04/2025 08:06

Have you checked your company handbook or policies, if you have them, to see if it’s covered in there? Ours popped a clause in last year after someone continually recorded meetings with HR without consent, while raising numerous spurious complaints. There’s a bit of a grey area around data protection as well if it’s on a personal device vs a recording through Teams for example, which is held according to company policy.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 15/04/2025 08:06

And she works in HR? She's an idiot. Definitely cover your back by telling your manager and spelling out to your colleague you do not want to be involved - she recorded secretly, which is fine if for her own use, but she's now involved you without the permission of her manager. I would block her on your phone.

RedFatball · 15/04/2025 16:02

I record Teams calls sometimes but only via the app itself and then it notifies everyone that they are being recorded. I also ask permission at the start of the call. This is purely because of the amount of information that is being discussed.

if I found someone had made a covert recording and shared it, I'd be really cross - not sure why as I would always be professional on a call, but it just doesn't quite feel right if that makes sense?
