Never - did the same job for 40 years.

I tried to change job twice but my mother put a stop to it.

jhftc · 28/03/2025 07:04

In over 20 years of work I've never had the same 'type' of job twice - I've never moved on to something with the same job title anyway. I've embraced trying new things, but I'm getting a bit old for starting over again now. I'm hoping to progress in my current role now that out children are a bit older 🤞

MightyBust · 28/03/2025 07:16

Never - I work in a highly specialised role, and I really enjoy it, so I'm not planning any big changes.

RampantIvy · 28/03/2025 07:16

I have changed jobs and handful of times but stayed in the same "industry".

I was very fortunate and was headhunted each time. Employers wanted experience and a proven track record.

I have been with my current employer for 20 years. The role has changed several times, which has meant that I have enjoyed fresh challenges and kept me interested in what I do.

I’ve moved roles within the same industry ( and company) all connected in some way though so not a complete change of direction

Sulu17 · 28/03/2025 09:23

I had a string of low effort jobs in my teens, then trained for and worked in the same job for the rest of my working life.

GingerTeaCup · 28/03/2025 09:24

3 times. After uni I worked in HR, then I taught at college, now I work in research for the NHS. I am not far off 50

WheresYourSnickers · 28/03/2025 09:24

What's your own experience @worldwidetravel2017? I find it odd you're asking others for more details without giving anything yourself.

I've changed roles many times, but always in the same industry.

LaPalmaLlama · 28/03/2025 09:25

I've evolved rather than changed. I joined a chartered accountancy grad scheme after Uni, so I did audit for the duration of that (3 years plus 1 more post qual), then I moved into industry and worked in finance but focused on forecasting and budgeting for 5 years. As part of that I did Investor relations (basically helping investors understand what's going on in a listed company) . From that I moved to asset management and finally ended up with what I thought was going to be a really temporary "mum" job when I had v young kids, which was working for that company's charitable foundation, and I ended ups doing that for 10 years and absolutely loved it.

I'm sorry your mother stopped you changing jobs. Was she very controlling in other ways too? It seems weird to me to have such input into an adult child's life.

Lulu1919 · 28/03/2025 09:26

Was a stay at home mum then I went back to work ...And I'm still here 20 years later !

familyissues12345 · 28/03/2025 09:28

I’ve had three different roles, one was a big change, then the next was a similar role in a different field

Nursery Nurse (long time!) - Support worker - Support worker

I am considering a move again, looking for a role that combines working with young children in a support role, so not a major change but combines the things I love

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 28/03/2025 13:42

Potentially about to change careers for a fourth time.

Ponderingwindow · 28/03/2025 13:44

I’ve been in the same job for 25 years. Before that I was in a very similar job that was excellent training for my current post. Before that I was in grad school

i’ve spent decades becoming an expert in my field

overthinkersanonnymus · 28/03/2025 13:46

I’ve always been in admin based jobs but in different industries from manufacturing, wholesale and now financial services.

I’ve just recently realised that I actually hate having a job where I’m sat on my arse all day making money for other people, so I am looking to maybe move in to new industry that supports people instead. Not sure how or what just yet though!

Similar kind of work really, all customer based

hospitality (grew up in, 8 years)
retail (1 year)
care worker (1 year)
emergency services call centre (11 years)
call centre (8 years plus 11 years above… Glutton for punishment)

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 28/03/2025 14:19

@worldwidetravel2017 retail management- activities manager and staff welfare - facilities management and hopefully now going into musical instrument repair and restoration.

ffsgloria · 28/03/2025 14:22

Currently training for what will be my third and final change. I've done 2 very different jobs, now on to the third. In an ideal world I would have found the right thing in my early 20s and stuck at it, but I've had a tough time.
