What is your commute like

As the title says what is your commute like and how do you find it?

Mine is currently 30 minutes in the car. I am home by 5.30 but am considering taking a better paid job which would mean I will be home at 6.30. I have children and I feel guilty that they will see me less. I would be gone from 7.30am to 6.30pm. Childcare not an issue. Thanks.

How old are your DC?

That's a long day, is it the commute rather than the job that's adding to the time?
Your kids aren't super young so at least there is a couple of hours between home and bed when you can see them (depending on bed time).
Is it work out of home every day?
For what it's worth my OH has a 1 HR each way commute 4 days a week. He's done it 5 years now but he finds it hard spending so long travelling daily. He gets up super early so his day is 6-4.45 door to door so he has more time to relax in the evening. He says he can physically only do a few more years as it's so tiring.

BigDahliaFan · 26/03/2025 14:50

I walk and am home by 5.15 usually, sometimes a bit later. Love it as can go to an exercise class, or walk the dog or cook something for tea or watch antiques bargain hunt or whatever.

Husband used to get home at 7.30 - now it's about 5.10 - he hardly knows what to do with himself - it's so much more time in the evening.

FunnysInLaJardin · 26/03/2025 14:52

my commute is 15 minutes each way on the bus and I leave at 9am and get home at 5pm. That's more than enough for me!

Here4thechocs · 26/03/2025 14:54

Mine is 3hrs ( exactly ) round trip & it depends on the time of the day. Off peak, it’s 1hr15mins each way.

What time do you leave and get home again? If you have children do you all manage ok with this?

3 days a week I leave at 6.30am to be in the office for 8am and leave at 4.45pm to be home for 6pm. One DC age 9. I drive, 90% of which is motorway. I’m used to it now so don’t find it particularly tricky but I don’t want to do it for the next 20 years!
It is still so much better than the last role where I only had a 20 minute drive but was expected in 8am - 6pm, 5 days per week

Togglebullets · 26/03/2025 14:57

WFH half the time and then a 30 minute round trip the rest of the time. I love it, I feel like I get time for me and the kids. I'm not massively ambitious though so work life balance is more important to me than career advancement or money.

NetballHoop · 26/03/2025 15:01

15 minutes each way by car or 45 by train as I'd have to head in the wrong direction before reaching a station with trains to where I need to be.

MinnieMountain · 26/03/2025 15:01

Is it only the money that appeals? Is it a big raise?

We’ve got an 11yo and DH and I both WFH, but it would be the length of the new commute in general which would put me off in your position.

My work is shift patterned so depends on start /finish times. Earliest start time is 0445hrs and latest is 0125hrs. My husband works remotely, save for one day on site. Kids are 14&11.

Flozle · 26/03/2025 22:22

10 seconds when WFH, ten minutes door to door when in the office.

DefyingGravidy · 26/03/2025 22:40

I used to get home at 6:30 when my DC were primary school age. Or 7pm often if I got the later train. I refused to feel guilty about something that would be standard for a man.

In fact by the time I got home DH would have started dinner and would be getting the kids in the bath, I’d take over bath and he’d finish dinner. Teamwork.

eurochick · 26/03/2025 22:43

Mine is just over an hour. 10 mins drive, 10 mins walk, 35 mins train, 10 mins walk. Plus a bit of waiting around. I generally leave around 8 and an home around 6:30 if I don’t have an event or seminar.

At least it is only a couple of times a week now. Pre-covid it was five days a week.

Bathnet · 26/03/2025 22:45

How many days a week? If 5 then absolutely not

Dizzy82 · 26/03/2025 22:45

I used to do an hours drive each way, during Covid I worked from home and our building was shut down. Now just have a half day in one of our buildings once a month. Don't think I could go back to commuting.

Tisfortired · 26/03/2025 22:49

A couple of years ago it was a 20 minute walk then a 30 minute tram ride and another 5 minute walk.

Now it’s a (timed PB) 4 minute walk from my house, it’s amazing I feel very lucky.

3isthemagicnumber · 26/03/2025 22:49

I leave the house at 7.15am -15 minute drive so there by 7.30am. .Leave work usually around 6.00 .Home 6.20ish . Then work in the evening .20+ years of this and I’m knackered but can’t seem to reduce it ..

Darkclothes · 26/03/2025 22:50

About 10min. Wash/dress and crawl downstairs. I work full time from home.

I have previously worked shifts, 12hr nights, commuted 3hr round trips etc but thank fully no more!

ItTook9Years · 26/03/2025 23:19

3.5-4 hours to get there and then 4-5 days later I take 3.5-4 hours getting home.

RockahulaRocks · 26/03/2025 23:39

1hr 10 mins each way, 3 days a week.

10 min walk, 40 min train (which used to be 34 mins so not sure where the 6 mins has gone), 20 min walk from the station.

I leave 30 mins early the days I’m in the office so I can be back to collect DD from after school club on time, making the time up across my WFH days.

Sweetandsaltycaroline · 27/03/2025 00:15

Mine is about 50 min, 12 min walk to station, 35 min train, 3 min at the other end. 4 or 5 days/week.
I don't start early though so leave around 8.30am (after DS has left for school) and get home around 6.30pm.

olololpk · 27/03/2025 07:47

2 hours door to door but I only do it twice a month. I’m looking at a job that would be 1 hour door to door, but would only be twice a week. In the world of hybrid I’m happier to do longer commutes. I spent a lot of time on my 20s commuting (very long commutes) but I’m done with that now!

2chocolateoranges · 27/03/2025 07:55

I’ve got a 23 minute commute by car,, however there are temporary traffic lights just now in the rote due to roadworks and I’m having to give myself 45minutes to get to work as they take so long.

for me it would depend on how much more money for he longer commute.
