Working from home ending?

Jp Morgan, Asda, Amazon and WPP are forcing people back into the office? Is it ending working from home?

The mark of productivity isn't how busy people are when they working from home but is the organisation more effective in delivering to their customers. How many people can honestly say that customer facing organisations work better post covid. If you think yes, then you need to seriously talk to more people. Wait times and call times are massively extended, nothing works first time, nobody appears to know what's going on or how to do anything that's off the script, chasing by the customer is constant.

This may come as a shock but plenty of people work in professional, non customer facing roles. Even more of a shocker to some is that people are hired, often in senior roles to deliver a set output, not purely “contracted hours”. Sensible companies realise in order to attract the best talent they need to offer attractive working terms, there have already been several companies in my industry who’ve tried to force return to office and had to sheepishly backtrack.

Some people seem to be unaware just how much WFH has helped those with disabilities or conditions including autism or those who can't be bothered with the nonsensical gossip and time wasting that go on in the average on site setting or those who are simply more introverted than the boisterous extroverts currently in charge of the world...

I bloody hate having to go on site, it eats up two hours a day in the commute if I'm lucky (that's 40 hours at least a month), leaves me knackered before I even start work and so tired by the time I get home I'm good for nowt. On the rare days I am allowed to work from home I get three times as much done as on the days on site.

It's like we learned bugger all about different ways of working and living as a so called civilization from all the COVID lockdowns.

Let’s hope so! All the work shy will be crying buckets right about now though!

I got through so much more work when wfh. No commuting, distractions or office gossip/politics. My company made a lot more money from me. Your thinking is frankly, basic.

ShouldIEvenBother · 11/01/2025 23:33

I have 2 jobs and both are fully remote.

Absolutely love it - and not because I can slack off (I can't slack off, the workload is too big and in any case that's just not who I am; I take pride in having a good work ethic).

Save money + time on not having to commute, and honestly - starting the day with a nice walk before my log-on time for whichever company I'm working for - this is a world of difference from when I used to get stressed because the train is cancelled, the next train is also cancelled, the bus hasn't turned up, etc etc. Plus, not everyone washes before getting on public transport or indeed turning up at the office stinking of god knows what - not having to deal with other folks' poor hygiene is not to be underestimated.

Neither of my roles will return to being office-based, and they don't need to.

Same.

I've wfh for years for most of the week. (I have site visits, and some training to deliver).
On the odd occasion when I've gone to work in the office it has been apparent how much less productive I am than when I am in the peace and quiet of my own home.

Actually much easier to have a social life, when you aren't wasting 2 hours of every day, commuting.
It means you are home in time to be able to 'go out' to things in the evening.

Hello39 · 11/01/2025 23:37

Staying hybrid...2 days in the office. Love the mix.

When everyone has to commute everyday it's a nightmare...traffic, no parking, etc etc

Ubugly · 11/01/2025 23:41

Omg the drama over WFH, sometimes we have fuck all to do and other days it’s insane, but we are the end chain so can’t delay anything so whether we are in the office or at home it has to be done.

people can nap in their lunch break or go for a walk or canteen etc.

I was once at work and told a top dog I was tired and he told me to go home and sleep!

our profit is way over the predicted by millions forecasted so we can’t be slacking that much!

Clearinguptheclutter · 11/01/2025 22:50

Our office has massively downsized so no room for us all. We’re in 1 day at the most

husband’s (American) company has done away with UK offices completely
so 100% remote

everyone in both companies works very hard

To be fair you have no idea of everyone works really hard

selffellatingouroborosofhate · 11/01/2025 23:49

Ebeneser · 11/01/2025 22:40

In work time? Does your work actually allow this? Mine doesn't, although they are quite flexible if you need to attend an appointment etc you can make up time, or you can start earlier to finish earlier etc. You are expected to work your contracted hours though, and be available during those hours. They'd be able to tell if you aren't.

You've misread that post. Poster goes to the gym after work, during the time that she would otherwise be commuting.

Clearinguptheclutter · 11/01/2025 23:50

Twitwootoo · 11/01/2025 23:48

Neither company is large and we know most of our respective colleagues so we have a pretty good idea

those that take the piss don't stick around

selffellatingouroborosofhate · 11/01/2025 23:57

My employer used WFH and hybrid to hire more people into the same space and convert open-plan offices into lab space. I couldn't go back into the office full-time now if I wanted to.

Flatulence · 12/01/2025 00:01

Nope, most large organisations (mine included) cannot accommodate all employees in the office space available. WFH is going nowhere.

My organisation has been using hybrid working for at least 15 years and it works extremely well. It's cost effective for the company (reduced estate), allows us to retain talent and allows employees to have a better work-life balance.

People who can't be trusted to WFH are exactly the same people who can't be trusted to work in the office without pissing around all day. The idea that all or most WFH people are taking the piss is just nonsense. Of course some people will be watching Netflix all day while WFH - but they're the same people who'll be dicking around at their desks in the office or chatting for hours. I'm old enough to have led office-based and hybrid teams and piss takers will take the piss wherever they're working.

I WFH. Have done since the first COVID lockdown. I'm more productive than ever.

The only difference is that I now do it in the Lake District rather than London. When I open my window I hear sheep bleating rather than sirens.

If you think I'm "work shy", feel free to DM me and come and visit and see how I remain one of the most respected professionals in my field.

Otherwise, shut up .

I'm amazed that people who WFH actually can go to the gym or have a nap. I WFH. Teams goes yellow after about 5 mins. People Instant message (or whatever it is called on Teams) or call me without warning. No way I'd get in a nap.

I've read loads of people on MN who can apparently get their work done in 2-3 hours a day , most days, at home, and no one cares as long as the work gets done
If it could be done that quickly I'm not sure how or why it was ever a ft role...

bendmeoverbackwards · 12/01/2025 00:21

I hate WFH, so depressing. Reminds me of lockdown. I go into the office now on my working days and use their electricity, heating and Wi-Fi.

Not everyone has a home suitable for WFH even if they wanted to. What are they supposed to do?

Edited

Maybe they got interrupted a lot in the office...

Get another job. The same as they'd do with any other job if they weren't happy.

Or go back to being office based as you have.

So in order to be not be boring you have to be an extrovert? Confused You'd hate my company, we don't have an office and we all WFH! Shock It's great, walk the dog on my lunch, watch Homes under the Hammer during my morning break, afternoon nap during my afternoon break. No commute.

Jealousy is not an attractive quality, dear.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 12/01/2025 01:38

1 day a week in the office for me. Not going to change. Not enough desk space to have everyone in the office every day. I get all my work done and don't take naps or go to the gym because I appreciate how lucky I am after years of horrendous commutes to find a job I love that I can do from home 4 days per week.

Nugg · 12/01/2025 01:48

For fuck's sake, it really pisses me off when people say that those of us that work from home are Work shy!!

If I'm at home working, I get 10 times the amount of work done that those in the office do who gossip all day and make tea and go for lunch and all the things that I don't fucking do at home !!!

I'm a public sector worker and honestly, you are getting your money's worth out of me !

Muthaofcats · 12/01/2025 01:54

TeenLifeMum · 11/01/2025 22:25

Yep, they make tea, eat breakfast at their desk, faff around the photocopier and do very little actual work.

Eating at your desk is so disgusting and anti social; esp breakfast! Ugh I find having to put up with everyone else’s eating noise, food smells etc so distracting I get far less done in the office than home where one can focus. The idea everyone is collaborating in the office is bollocks too. It’s fun to be in as much more chances to procrastinate but deffo less productive.

coxesorangepippin · 12/01/2025 02:08

Doubt it

It's cheaper for many businesses
