Jp Morgan, Asda, Amazon and WPP are forcing people back into the office? Is it ending working from home?

I'm amazed that people who WFH actually can go to the gym or have a nap. I WFH. Teams goes yellow after about 5 mins. People Instant message (or whatever it is called on Teams) or call me without warning. No way I'd get in a nap.

I wfh. I go to the gym. Instead of wasting 1h in commuting I’m at the gym. So I still finish at the same time but instead of waiting for the bus I’m at the gym.

In work time? Does your work actually allow this? Mine doesn't, although they are quite flexible if you need to attend an appointment etc you can make up time, or you can start earlier to finish earlier etc. You are expected to work your contracted hours though, and be available during those hours. They'd be able to tell if you aren't.

DatingDinosaur · 11/01/2025 22:46

I have a 2 hour lunch when I WFH. Does that make me work shy?

Even though I still do an 8 hour day, as per my contract of employment. My work is date and time stamped so I can't lie about it.

8am-12noon. Then 2pm-6pm.

If this makes me work shy then so be it. My employer is okay with it and that's all that matters.

Not the person you asked but I think she means her work day used to be say 9-5 with an hour commute either side. So now she still works 9-5 at home, but as soon as her working day ends she can go to the gym/hairdressers etc as she no longer has to do the commute.

HelpMeGetThrough · 11/01/2025 22:46

Not ending here. The office is 400 miles away, so I don't go in often.

Last time I went in was 2023.

as said instead of commuting I spend my time doing things I like I.e going to the gym. If I start at 9 I can be in the gym 730-830 instead of commuting. Same as lunch break.

Thanks. That’s exactly what I meant.

So you are not taking the piss then. This is about those who go to the gym or whatever IN working hours. Not when they would have been commuting

Copernicus321 · 11/01/2025 22:49

The mark of productivity isn't how busy people are when they working from home but is the organisation more effective in delivering to their customers. How many people can honestly say that customer facing organisations work better post covid. If you think yes, then you need to seriously talk to more people. Wait times and call times are massively extended, nothing works first time, nobody appears to know what's going on or how to do anything that's off the script, chasing by the customer is constant.

Clearinguptheclutter · 11/01/2025 22:50

Our office has massively downsized so no room for us all. We’re in 1 day at the most

husband’s (American) company has done away with UK offices completely
so 100% remote

everyone in both companies works very hard

Many of us have flexible hours as well. So I might do 8-530 with 1.5h lunch break for the gym and still I’d have done my hours

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 11/01/2025 22:52

My work declared they wanted us all to be in 3 days a week and then reduced the number of floors they lease in the building from 3 to 1. So there's not enough room for everyone to even come in 2 days a week. 🤔

And I get far more work done when I WFH.

Ah yeah read your post again. Yep, deffo a perk of WFH is no commute! Thankfully my current job doesn't have a long commute anyway, so I go into the office every now and then for a change of scenery. My job before though was 40 mins there, 40 mins back and worse on Fridays (like I'd finish 16:30 and not get home until nearly 18:00!). I don't miss those days!

jackstini · 11/01/2025 22:59

Fully remote, head office is 6k miles away so not going to change any time soon

I don't even have any set hours anymore - they know I will do what I need to get the job done

I can go for walks, do shopping, out for lunch - my boss is fine with that as I do a good job - all KPIs exceeded and customers happy

Shiningout · 11/01/2025 22:59

I work my arse off from home and don't take my lunch break, so anyone saying everyone who wfh is workshy can fuck off 🙄

MajorCarolDanvers · 11/01/2025 22:59

Absolutely not. There are a great many workplaces that are remote and hybrid but these don’t make the news.

my own work is fully remote and no chance whatsoever of that changing.

DH also works from home and this is his 4th wfh job. He has been wfh since 2015.

Wheelz46 · 11/01/2025 22:59

Definitely not happening with my company either.

WFH has been super successful, reduced sickness, improved productivity and people on the whole are much happier!

Absolutely no way of slacking off within my company, we work on productivity, everything we do is registered, it's very simple if you are seen not to be productive then you will be managed the same way as if you were in the office.

Additionally, no way of slacking off as we also take customer calls, our management would soon be on our case if calls were waiting and we were seen not to be available, very easy to manage whether at home or in the office.

The days that I am in the office, there is multiple interruptions from people with general non work related chit chat, I am definitely more productive at home.

Hybrid for me, is the perfect work life balance, the company I work for appreciates that this way of working has improved mental health, I can't see it changing, not for us anyway.

BBQPete · 11/01/2025 23:00

Won't be happening in my Local Authority. They have either sold off, or stopped renting a huge % of the office space they had pre-covid.
They realise they have saved ££££

merryandbrightdelight · 11/01/2025 23:02

We're hybrid with a max of 2 days wfh for non front facing staff. It's saved on office space and other finances, and like others have said, sick days have been reduced.

BashfulClam · 11/01/2025 23:02

There isn’t space for all our staff so we are hybrid. Certainly not work shy, the most slicing I do is put a washing on, but it’s while the kettle boils as I’m allowed to get a coffee. I hit and exceed all my metrics. I just don’t need to spend £100 any 40 hours a month on trains to do so (actually never thought about my monthly commute time before…that’s depressing). 2 hours a day just stolen.

caringcarer · 11/01/2025 23:07

I think a mixture of WFH and into the office is the best of both worlds. Not all offices have enough room to accommodate all staff everyday. WFH everyday is not so good for mental health. A mixture of both is perfect. Less money spent on traveling and if you've got a boiler repair person coming to fix your boiler or similar it's so useful if you WFH that day to be there to let them in without having to take a days leave.

I took it to mean this too.

Sophie717373 · 11/01/2025 23:13

DH and I both earn 6 figure salaries in the private sector and both WFH full time. Providing we deliver the expected results, neither of our employers really care what hours we work or what breaks we take.

I think it’s a fantastic arrangement. I deliver the results my employer expects from me while also getting all the mundane domestic tasks done during the week leaving the weekend free for family stuff.

I tend to go for a 3 or 4 mile walk every working day as I don’t want to become too sedentary which can happen with WFH. If needed I can use this time to make calls or listen in on meetings where I’m not presenting etc.

Being able to turn my laptop on at 9am and switch it off at 5pm with no commuting at either end of the day gives me a significantly better quality of life than when I was office based. I’d never go back to any premises based job now. Its not worth the time sacrifice.

It feels like you are splitting hairs here. If you work your set hours but go to the gym in the middle then you are not taking the piss. If you go to the gym during your old commute then you are not taking the piss. I am referring to those who go to the gym or do their weekly shop or have a daily nap when they should be working and who DO NOT make up the hours.

There was a thread a few months ago about this and I was disgusted by the amount of posters who gleefully announced that they did this (and other things) without any remorse. It is these people who spoil WFH for the rest of us as employers don't feel they can trust people.

ThatsNotMyTeen · 11/01/2025 23:19

Sakura7 · 11/01/2025 22:23

Exactly this.

In my job it would be pretty bloody obvious if someone wasn't doing their work, regardless whether they're at home or in an office.

Same and it’s phone based so the customer experience is no different either, they probably don’t even know where people they are talking to are.

that said I’m moving from fully remote to hybrid this year as it’s lost its appeal after 5 years.
