Two jobs at once?

Jigglypuff82 · 29/12/2024 17:25

If i were to call in long term sick at job A and start another job B to pass the 3 month probabtion period, would Job A find out? Then I could just quit easily?

I understand that Job B would call Job A for a reference before offering me the position.

Yes. Via your tax code.

Jigglypuff82 · 29/12/2024 18:00

I thought about this, but its only going to flag to HR right?....not actual management.

Is job B working the same hours as job A? Or is, for example, job A standard office hours and job B a couple of evenings?

Whijfif · 29/12/2024 20:39

If i were to call in long term sick

You can't call in long term sick. You need to be signed off by GP issuing you a Fit note to say you are unfit to work. It's an official document you have to give to your employer to claim sick pay.

Theworldisfullofgs · 29/12/2024 20:42

I find it hard to believe you think this is possible.
Are they the same hours? If they are it's a very bad idea.
If not, it's still a bad idea to call in sick and do another job.

Theworldisfullofgs · 29/12/2024 20:43

And if job b found out what you were doing they would think you were untrustworthy.

SparklyBrickViper · 29/12/2024 20:45

So you are planning to fraudulently claim you are sick to pass probation period on a potential new job?

Read it back and hopefully you’ll understand why it’s a bad idea.

LIZS · 29/12/2024 21:00

You would be falsely claiming sick pay and your contract with A may require you to have permission to work another job. You also won't have a p45 to give to B.

ncduetooutingsituation · 29/12/2024 21:28

There are quite a number of people who have been doing two or three FT jobs simultaneously, since Covid WFH became normal.
I talked to someone who got away with two FT jobs, and started a third (in IT).
Juggling Teams meetings.
Sounds horrendously stressful.

I didn't believe him initially. He told me to google 'Reddit Overemployed'. I went down the rabbit hole.

Worst case scenario is being fired.
I couldn't possibly do it, but the entire concept blew my mind.

Well its more about phasing out job A *been there 8 years) so even if im not paid full sick pay entirely just SSP thats ok....and if I pass probation on Job B, then il just call Job A and say I quit??

Same, FT hours. Job A is pretty slow these days

That would be fraudulently claiming SSP. Which is also not ok.

LIZS · 29/12/2024 21:44

SSP is state funded, so you are defrauding DWP. Why not just resign from A then start at B on expiry of notice. Like most people would.

Startingagainandagain · 29/12/2024 21:44

You would get away with it if your were doing a second job as a self-employed freelancer but I think it is was another regular job as an employee your current employer/payroll would find out because you would be paying additional taxes...

Technically it is not illegal to be signed off sick from one job but still be fit to do another.

For example, someone could be unfit to do a physical job if you have hurt your back, but could continue doing a second job that involved only computer work from home.

But it would be expected that you are doing your second job outside of the work hours you are contracted to do your first job.

I would give your notice and get a sick note if you don't want to work it then start your new job.

Agree it is a red herring , but what if you did n't pass probation. Would you return to A role or repeat the deception with potential company C? Why would you not resign from A now if you do not intend to return.

Yes I was thinking if I didnt pass probation to return to Job A? I can take the sick unpaid it wouldnt be an issue as id be being paid from job B.

They can just get rid of you in 24 months?

Yes. You have no more employment rights after passing probation than before.

It's very rare to fail probation. Why are you so worried about it?

What sort of sickness are you going to tell the GP you have in order to get a sick note of three months?

HoundsOfHelfire · 30/12/2024 03:50

Why not do things the normal way? When you accept job B, hand your notice in for job A? It’s rare not to pass a probation.

Personally I’d view having both jobs while signed off sick as unethical. it would make me question your morals and trustworthiness.

Monty27 · 30/12/2024 03:57

@Jigglypuff82 I really don't believe you are serious. What field do you work in?

DandyTealSeal · 30/12/2024 04:11

Why are you not confident you’ll pass your probation period? I don’t know the legalities of what you are suggesting but people change jobs all the time without doing this, not sure why you’d need to do this?

TooFar123 · 30/12/2024 06:03

I know someone who did this around 10 years ago. Lasted less than 2 weeks before he was found out and let go from both companies.
No one could understand why he did it. Word spread throughout the industry. Don't know what happened to him but I can imagine he struggled to find another job locally in his profession.
