What job do you do? Being nosy!

Basically what it says on the title!

What job do you do?

I'm trying to work out a new path for myself - I've been a teacher (too people-y and long hours), and spent the last 8 years in marketing, getting quite senior but I'm now looking for something new.

So tell me what you do, and if you like it, and why!

Bonus points for jobs that let you drop off and pick up kids from school or be flexible around school holidays 😁

School catering. I love it, it fits around my daughter's school hours, I get the holidays off with her, and it's a really lovely school.

ShoeJunkie · 11/12/2024 08:04

NHS speech and language therapist working mainly with deaf children (waves to @waterbuoy)
Been a speechie for nearly 25 years. I love it but it’s hard to feel like you are doing a good enough job with ever shrinking budgets.

Redglitter · 11/12/2024 08:06

Police Controller. Love it. No 2 days are the same.

QueenOfToast · 11/12/2024 08:32

I'm a Pilates teacher. I retrained during my early 40s. I only teach 1-1s, so it's not as people-y as teaching group classes.

It's not a bad fit for doing school pick ups and drop offs and I know quite a lot of teachers with home studios who successfully manage their business around the children.

Not a quick career move though - 2 years of training and practice teaching before you can really get going.

I am an assessor for a local charity that helps the elderly who are feeling isolated. I love my job, great team and get to meet some really interesting people. It’s so rewarding to know we are helping them to feel happy and part of a community.

hellohellooo · 11/12/2024 08:38

@Edizzler25

Sounds intense !!!!

Lots of skills needed there I am sure you are great at your job

Sounds exhausting too !!!!

PurpleChrayn · 11/12/2024 08:44

I'm a freelance academic editor.

It's very flexible. I can basically choose how many words I edit on a daily basis.

Bjorkdidit · 11/12/2024 08:50

Lots of teachers are going into the civil service, There's a whole range of jobs and being a 'civil servant' is much wider than the narrow view that the general public has of it - there are jobs all over the country including in arms length bodies that are nothing to do with central government etc.

As a graduate, entry level is most likely at HEO grade, although EO, SEO or even G7 is a possibility. Have a look on civilservicejobs.gov.uk

Horrace · 11/12/2024 08:59

Business Analyst at a large bank
Good pay and benefits
Good work life balance
WFH 3 days a week
My colleagues are lovely

But mostly I dislike it.
It feels pointless
I've done it for so long
I hate the corporate bullshit

Would love to spend my days in wellies with donkeys getting paid shit loads 😂

Police Controller. Love it. No 2 days are the same.

One of the best jobs I've ever had. Absolutely adored it. Made the mistake of moving to the other end of the radio and burned out in a decade.

JurassicPark4Eva · 11/12/2024 09:15

I'm now a criminal intelligence analyst covering approx 20% of England and all of Wales.

Love it. Highly flexible work, 90% WFH, stress is plenty manageable and mostly very low with occasional manic days. Lots of cross-agency working. But also lots of frustration due to crap systems, poor processes, terrible managers in the many agencies, working with grossly underfunded and under staffed services (police prisons etc) and so on.

It's not hugely well paid, I'm below the median UK wage, but I took a £12k paycut to take this job from one I absolutely detested and it's been worth every penny to my sanity. I save a fortune in WFH - working in a city centre was costing me £20/day for parking, tolls and fuel alone in the last job.

What type of tasks do you have with this work?

Sounds fascinating

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 11/12/2024 09:19

I’m an Executive Assistant/PA currently working as some sort of admin assistant for NHS risk dept on a contract.

I don’t particularly like this current job or my others as they’ve all been contracts recently and I can’t seem to get a permanent role.

I like the proactiveness, detail, organisation, task juggling aspect of the jobs I do do.

JurassicPark4Eva · 11/12/2024 09:26

I live in a world of Excel spreadsheets most of the time. The volume of data I read and process in a day is not quantifiable!

The kind of things I'll be asked to do will be, say, looking at a problem in a location and working out who is responsible for it or looking at how to prevent it. Everything from importation of drugs, use and possession of firearms to County Lines, staff corruption or drones.

It's mostly drugs these days and the new nitazenes, fentanyl derivatives and synthetic opioids are terrifying.

AWAPSO · 11/12/2024 09:31

Police Custody Officer. How I feel about it changes on a near hourly basis 😆.

TidyDancer · 11/12/2024 10:11

I work in medical management. The specifics are quite niche in my area but broadly the equivalent of practice management. Most of the time I do like it, no two days are the same and there's a lot of autonomy, but there's the odd stressful situation (that in some cases is preventable and therefore frustrating).

I don't think I have the best work life balance some weeks as I do work quite long hours (unavoidable) but I like it better than my previous job that left my mental health in the toilet.

Flapearedknave · 11/12/2024 17:05

Learning support coordinator.

Run a disability team for higher education.

Has it's ups and downs, but on the whole I love my team and the role.

Flexible enough but that's my boss. And I'm very flexible with my team.

Chickenwing2 · 10/12/2024 21:14

Civil servant. Good work life balance and benefits, bad pay!

Also a civil servant, I don’t like my current role but I’ve enjoyed some more than this one.

Boring job, people and infuriating culture but not very people-y and excellent work life balance, pension etc. Also disagree with this poster - I am essentially a very well paid secretary most days and don’t do very much nor have very much responsibility, for over £50k!

ByTheSea · 11/12/2024 17:25

I'm a business analyst in Fintech.

Retired microbiologist and tutor. I loved it but I love retirement more.

WetBandits · 11/12/2024 17:35

AwakeNotThruChoice · 11/12/2024 06:32

@WetBandits is it definitely ok now to keep a Mirena Coil in for longer than the original 5 years?

It is! The licence is now eight years for contraception.

It’s still recommended to change it after five years if it’s been fitted as part of HRT or to control heavy periods, though.

Incredibly important job

I’m the gamekeeper to @KurtCobainLover ’s poacher - I assess and recommend grant applications for a philanthropic foundation- a lot of people switch between the two actually if their fundraising role focuses on foundations/ corporate giving.

do you enjoy it? I
currently write grant applications and have thought about switching to the other side.
