What job do you do? Being nosy!

Basically what it says on the title!

What job do you do?

I'm trying to work out a new path for myself - I've been a teacher (too people-y and long hours), and spent the last 8 years in marketing, getting quite senior but I'm now looking for something new.

So tell me what you do, and if you like it, and why!

Bonus points for jobs that let you drop off and pick up kids from school or be flexible around school holidays 😁

Assassin.

useitorlose · 10/12/2024 19:34

Senior leader in an international school. Still not much use to you!

WhitstablePearl · 10/12/2024 19:36

Partner in a firm of solicitors. It’s stressful & exhausting. But it pays well

LittleMissFuckUp · 10/12/2024 19:56

I quit my job today 😁 mega risky because I haven't got anything else lined up yet but the inflexibility of my company and industry was killing me and I literally couldn't juggle work and the kids any more.

Hoping to find something that is anything but production and textiles 😅

@OnTheJourneyOnwards

I always loved languages so started studying it among others, but loved it more so focussed my efforts there. It takes a long time to get the interpreter qualification but I would recommend everyone starts out studying level one and take it from there. At the very least you'll have fun and gain some basic conversational skills to chat to deaf people.

Shaiihkwo · 10/12/2024 20:06

Hospital doctor.

Have always loved it, but finding the inflexibility, long hours, shifts, exams extremely difficult with little children.

Am beginning to think I need to quit, but I can’t imagine what else I’d do.

Moier · 10/12/2024 20:14

I used to work for a Well womens charity... Helping women on their own who needed to have surgery and no support... especially hysterectomies or anything gynaecological.
Going to appointments with them. Visiting them in hospital and at home.
Giving them comfort and reassurance.( I'm retired now) retired age 56 ( I'm now 66).

Well done !! Life is too short xxxx

hellohellooo · 10/12/2024 20:29

I am a child psychologist

Love it

Very lucky

Great pay

It's a wonderful job

NewLifter · 10/12/2024 20:48

My job definitely wouldn't suit as it's very peopl-y, very long hours and very inflexible. I'm a Midwifery sister

Senior leader in an international school. Still not much use to you!

Can I ask how you moved from the state sector to an international school? I'm assuming you did?

Jowak1 · 10/12/2024 21:10

@OnTheJourneyOnwards yes I find it very rewarding as you can see something built form nothing eg some projects I have worked on in the past is a vacant piece of land transformed into a well used leisure centre. An old building vacant for 20 years brought back to use. I have worked for local
Authorities all my life. My children are teenagers now but when they were little the flexi time was great for before and after school pick ups.

Blushingm · 10/12/2024 21:12

District nurse - it's ok but some patients and staff get on my nerves......plus I'm working Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Eve (late) and New Year's Day 🤬

Chickenwing2 · 10/12/2024 21:14

Civil servant. Good work life balance and benefits, bad pay!

LaCoteBasque · 10/12/2024 21:19

Technology writer.

I work in house for a well known technology company (connectivity/ communications type thing). I get to research interesting innovations (quantum computing, smart cities, artificial intelligence etc.), and write about them. I also write all the comms for the company CEO, CTO, CFO etc., so I’m also a bit like a ghostwriter and they wlll have their preferred styles. It’s very creative.

I’m three days a week atm as I got back from maternity leave in Aug. I think I have the best of both worlds really. And I can’t see myself going back to full time ever as my DH earns a pretty decent amount. So might go freelance at some stage for a bit more freedom.

Mamofteenager · 10/12/2024 21:24

Housing Solutions Officer for Local Authority. Has some rewarding moments but very stressful and demanding

LittleHangleton · 10/12/2024 21:26

Non-teaching Assistant Headteacher - safeguarding, pastoral and attendance.

Mine is fairly non-peopley because mostly I just manage/guide others who do the bulk of the peoply work.

I'm QTS so paid on the teaching leadership scale. But I came via the support staff role and haven't taught for about 20 years.

I've been considering this sort of thing perhaps. 🤔 Well, trying for a job at my local council. Do you find it rewarding? And flexible for pick up/drop off at school?

Just to add to this previous poster, I’ve previously worked for local authorities (private sector housing) and now work for the civil service (intelligence) and the flexibility across both sectors/organisations has been great. Hybrid working/flexi time etc. I’ve also really enjoyed my time in both, the roles I’ve worked in have been really varied and interesting, there’s lots of mobility to move jobs/departments (I’ve switched jobs every two years for progression), really good progression and I’ve had great management in both. I think they can be really great places to work - definitely keep your eye out at local councils!

Trinity69 · 10/12/2024 21:30

I’m an EHCP and Admissions administrator in a SEN School. I actually love my job, just wish it paid more! All holidays off and my school are incredibly flexible.

Dveos · 10/12/2024 21:40

In its simplest form, I buy and sell products on Amazon. Love the freedom to manage my own timetable, but can be very stressful day to day

FuckItItsFine · 10/12/2024 21:42

I’m a hairdresser. I retrained at 30 as my previous stressful office role was making me ill.

Been doing it almost ten years and recently went self-employed. I love love love it! I get to chat to people all day about anything and everything. It’s creative, I’m making people feel good about themselves, my colleagues are fab. I regularly teach myself from YouTube or go on courses to learn new skills, techniques etc.

Very flexible (being SE) although not necessarily a predictable income until you’ve been doing it for a while and have your regular customers.

I love reading people’s lovely reviews and hearing about how happy they are with their hair! I had a woman the other day come in to see me to say she was 68 and I’d given her the best hair cut she’d ever had. I’ve been in therapy for years because I struggle with self-confidence, impostor syndrome and beat myself up a lot but hearing things like that almost make me believe I might be alright 🥰

Project manager. It's unbelievably stressful and I hate it!

Snap. Never enough resources to deliver, exec have totally unrealistic expectations

Stormyweatheroutthere · 10/12/2024 21:46

Self employed cleaner.. Hard graft at times... Have some amazing customers.. No 2 days are the same. Dcats and ddogs on tap! And cake... And coffee. Well appreciated every day which is lovely... I know I make a difference to their lives albeit in a small way compared to other people's jobs but I can't imagine doing anything else...

hellohellooo · 10/12/2024 21:49

@Edizzler25

Want does it entail?
I always wondered

With new people all the time or the same group?

Sounds stressful

blueshoes · 10/12/2024 21:52

OP, what interests you?

Or put it in another way, what did you like about your teaching and marketing job?
