My Coworker Is Asking Me If I'll Cry On Her Last Day In The Office?

user1471867483 · 04/12/2024 06:44

Well, my answer is no. We sit opposite each other and yes we're the first two in of a morning for an hour or so. I don't have strong connections in the workplace so no way would I cry. The workplace is purely somewhere to get money with no emotion. She said she would cry if I was leaving. She told me two guys downstairs had tears in their eyes when she told them she’s going.I wonder if she is fishing to see if I'm going to miss her? I had to pretend with her that of course I'll shed a tear. She's 33 but going on 13! I think she's attention seeking. She was almost expecting it of me when she first told me she was leaving. Is the attention seeking?

Attention seeking drama llama.

One colleague burst into tears when I announced my departure and said things would never be the same. Once I left I never heard from her again. It’s work - not family and not real friends.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 04/12/2024 07:01

Why lie?

Just say no. You’re enabling this weirdness.

Werecat · 04/12/2024 07:01

How odd. Seems like she’s too wrapped up in her work life.

ExquisiteDecorations · 04/12/2024 07:05

Strange. I have made good friends with many colleagues over the years but no one has ever cried when anyone else has left. If it's a true friendship you'll stay in touch anyway. If not, nothing to shed a tear over.

Doingmybest12 · 04/12/2024 07:09

It's a bit odd to go to the other extreme and say work is just financial amd no emotions involved. It can be sad to leave and to see others moving on. It can be unsettling for a team when things change. I wouldn't ask about how others felt like she has but we are all different and not robots (yet).

YourRubyBeaker · 04/12/2024 07:09

I always cry when a colleague leaves but as I’m a teacher.
It’s usually because it is tied into Year 6 leaving assembly which is super emotional and tears are contagious not because I feel any genuine sadness.

Tell her you're in counselling.

WillowTit · 04/12/2024 07:17

tell her you have organised balloons and party poppers

My friend told me to take an onion in with me on her last day 😧

Tell her: "My emotions will run too deep for tears" 😁

timetodecide2345 · 04/12/2024 07:48

We've just had a work colleague leave and was making such a drama out of it and kept coming back in. Her so called best friend at work even said ' has she not left yet'

gamerchick · 04/12/2024 08:02

It is weird. Probably just as jarring as starting each word with a capital letter in a sentence.

People like this are usually after a pressie. Better get your card out for something special.

steponacrackbreakyourmothersback · 04/12/2024 08:04

I'd be nice and say things like "it won't be the same around here without you " but you can't fake tears. It's work at the end of the day

ByMerryKoala · 04/12/2024 08:07

Just say you are crying on the inside. Then try not to grin.

Fraaahnces · 04/12/2024 08:08

Tell her you don’t want to smudge your mascara. 🙄

LunaNorth · 04/12/2024 08:11

“No, I tend to compartmentalise my trauma. It’s the only way I can cope.”

Now our boss has come in and said to her she's going to miss her. When our boss went back out, this colleague asked me, "Did you see her shed a tear"? I said no, but smiled reassuringly. This colleague is going on too much. Getting on my nerves.

You can humour her without going overboard. ‘The place certainly won’t be the same without you Susan but I’m glad you’re moving on with your career’ etc.

WarmFrogPond · 04/12/2024 08:45

I’d assume she was joking, in a deeply weird ‘extended far too long joke’ way.

healthybychristmas · 04/12/2024 08:55

I agree with the previous poster who said she is expecting a big present.

HoneyButterPopcorn · 04/12/2024 08:58

I would have asked if she was dying?

Psychoticbreak · 04/12/2024 10:14

Tell her yes, tears of pure joy.

StormingNorman · 04/12/2024 10:16

Never cried and never seen anyone cry.
