Keeping warm while WFH

BloodyVarifocals · 26/11/2024 18:28

Would love to hear how everyone else keeps warm while WFH - my house is relatively warm, but I tend to feel the cold.

Some of my favourite things:
Small plug in heated pad that I've strapped to my office chair
Ugg boots worn as slippers (have lasted for a few years so far)
Various neck warmers
M&S light heat tech vests and long sleeved tops to wear underneath woolly jumpers
Turtledove fingerless gloves

Small blanket for on my knee when I need it
Cheap leg warmers (Amazon)

I don't use all of these at once 😄. I've also just bought a Beurer plug in cushion for on the sofa, bliss.

I don't want to heat the whole house if I'm wfh and the only one here, so I tend to use a heated throw and warm clothes, thick socks and slippers. My hands get so cold though, I really must invest in some decent fingerless gloves!

Ooh, try some turtledoves - I have a lovely dark grey pair, they're so soft. I'd quite like another pair, but the exact colour you get is a bit of a lottery, which puts me off a bit.

I also feel a bit like Helena Bonham-Carter when I wear them.

@EmotionalSupportPotato, DH is also WFH 😄, but in a different room. He doesn't feel the cold.

Swap rooms?

NotYourSaviour · 26/11/2024 20:03

I have my own independent wall heater in my little office but it's only worth it if I keep the door shut - and then the two dogs keep pushing in and out and wafting the draft in, so it's a bit of a waste of electricity!

I rely on decent thick slippers with a sole, a thin layer under a jumper - add a scarf if I get chilly. Fingerless wrist/hand warmer type gloves.

And huge cups of tea and a mug warmer!

LadyChilli · 26/11/2024 20:06

Weirdly I have noticed that a couple of tea lights burning in my (admittedly very small) office makes a difference to the temperature. I feel it when I go in and out of the room.

I also do the heated throw, wrist warmers, a hot water bottle that you can put your feet into and drink a lot of tea. If I still get too cold I do star jumps while I wait for the kettle to boil.

An oodie is ugly and yet so effective

GrumpyMenopausalWombWielder · 26/11/2024 20:13

I've tried so many things but I've settled on the following:

Got my heating set up with a hive & smart valves on each radiator/room. I'm sticking to one room at home & if it gets really cold I hit boost for a short sharp blast only in the room I'm in. Otherwise I wear my heated hoodie. You don't need to be plugged into a socket, you can heat it with the same battery you might carry for charging your phone. It's so much toastier than my heated blanket. I've got the heated socks as well in case my feet get cold.

I do think I need some other fingerless gloves though. The ones I've got aren't great & annoy me too much.

Where is your home, OP? The Arctic?!

shockeditellyou · 26/11/2024 20:21

I find it’s the sitting still for long periods that keeps me cold, not necessarily that the house is too cold IYSWIM? I’m more mobile in the office so don’t get as cold.

i have a small oil filled radiator under my desk, hot water bottles and old fleecy jumpers that come off for teams calls.

whydoihavetowork · 26/11/2024 20:22

Trousers made of the same material as an Oodie on a really bad day!

Whatamitodonow · 26/11/2024 20:30

Has anyone actually done the sums or are we all just assuming heated throws, oil filled radiators etc are cheaper?

because when I got a smart meter I did an experiment and it was cheaper over 24 hours to have the central heating on than it was to heat just one room with several electrical devices to keep warm.

oil filled rad for example costs about 80p an hour. 8 hours = £6.40. That’s not including the heated throws, hot water bottles etc.

gas ch with rads on in the study, front room and using the cooker, hot water etc costs me £4.50 a day when I’m working, and I’m much warmer and more comfortable not bundled up.

don’t assume you’re plug in heaters are cheaper.

NoiseDrama · 26/11/2024 20:38

I wrap a fleecy blanket around me like a sarong. We are very casual so can get away with oodie/dressing gown if just meetings within the team. Meetings out of the team I would wear stick a plain hoody or jumper on for the meeting.

LindorDoubleChoc · 26/11/2024 20:41

All you need is warm socks, warm slippers, an Oodie and hot drinks throughout the day. It's very simple.

Someone had a dressing gown on at one of our meetings recently - it's not exactly our usual vibe, but I approved 😄.

I just got a lovely fairisle jumper, so I'm planning to wear that fat too often going forwards.

Cheapo fluffy slipper boots.
Long full length body warmer down to my calfs ,its like sitting in a sleeping bag.
Making sure I work in a room where the sun comes in in the winter.

maybeinanotherlifetime · 26/11/2024 20:44

I have a 2pack of really thick fluffy socks from Primark a few years, they keep my feet toasty warm- when WFH. I would actually be gutted if I lost a pair as I’ve not seen those again in the store.

i have a selection of extremely battered longline jumpers that I wear with vests and thermal tops underneath.

my most recent purchase was a pair of fleece joggers from Matalan.

I occasionally blast the fan heater for ten minutes here and there if it’s still unbearable

muchstermonch · 26/11/2024 20:49

please don't laugh - I got one of these recently!

it is really great for warming me up from freezing cold to a point whereby I feel I can get things done, within a few mintues. I wear layers below.

I think it will save me a packet over the winter in gas bills.

I do try to have a bit of heating on for face and fingers, but once the rest of you is warm it takes so much less heating overall. Would highly recommend.

Just have to take it off if anyone pops around LOL - a bit embarrassing to wear.

Original 6G Black Shark Sleeping Bag Suit

Also to add I spent ages trying out oodies, electric blankets and the like but this is the next level. Oodies always kept my legs cold and never quite hit the spot. With this the legs remain nice and warm and the overall effect is much better.

BloodyVarifocals · 26/11/2024 20:55

@muchstermonch, that's amazing - I showed DS, and he's said OK, I can see you wearing that.

I don't think you would regret getting one to be honest, if you're worried about staying warm and saving on your gas bills! And it should last years. I got over the embarrassment factor pretty quickly. It is worth getting the right size though and the right weight/thickness for you - some are thicker and warmer than others. I found the heavier one we tried a bit too bulky so returned it - and went for a lighter one in the end as easier to move around in vs the bulky one. And there are different sizes - too small could restrict your movement but too big might also be a bit annoying - so maybe ask them advice or check the online guidance. I got one for my DD as well in the end.

muchstermonch · 26/11/2024 21:03

if helpful this is the weight I went for in the end, the lighter one, as less restrictive and bulky

Snap. Mine is just my new best mate!

Just the same as us oldies or disabled who are at home ( although not working).Central heating ./ fire..
Heated throw.. electric blanket.
Warm clothes/ socks/ slippers etc.
Don't understand why working from home makes you any colder than those who are at home all the time?

When DH works at home, he's sat at his computer for 7-8 hours with only occasional breaks. I get to potter around and be a lot more active because I'm not working. That's the difference.

EmotionalSupportPotato · 26/11/2024 18:44

At some point you have to put the heating on

My heating is on but I feel cold a lot due to conciliation issues and my office room is at the back of the house which is in the shade.
