I know one who moved into caring in a residential home. But that's obviously just her and won't necessarily be what you want.

What are your transferable skills? Caring, communication, team work, working with children, what else?
What aspects of your TA role did you like and dislike?
What do you like doing in your spare time?
What kind of hours/shifts do you want?
Do you run a car?

I've been in education for years. I am still in education but now work in an office within a college, which works well for me at the moment.

Biscuitandacuppa · 30/09/2024 17:22

I’d also be interested in recommendations, I’m a TA and a qualified braillist. I have a BSc (Hons) and currently studying BA History.

I work in a children's residential care home and we have former TAs on our staff. It's a 2 way street as some support workers also leave to become TAs. Many transferable skills. The home I work in is specifically for children with disabilities (mainly ASD & ADHD). You should get lots of training in the things you need to know to do the job well, for example trauma informed practice and attachment.

I can't work with sen kids. A lot of my current role is doing that and a reason I want out.
To be honest I like working on my own and organizing.

Sounds like an office based job would suit you maybe. Look at charities, admin work, civil service jobs.

Underlig · 30/09/2024 18:08

My DD was aTA in a SEN school. She now works in the charity sector with homeless people.

Frowningprovidence · 30/09/2024 18:10

My TA friends from work have left to do dog walking, a receptionist, a phlebotomist, two administrators, and a swim teacher

BSc(Hons) in what?

curlycurlymoo · 30/09/2024 21:14

I'll have a look at charity sector jobs. Thank you. Need to get out

HarrietSchulenberg · 30/09/2024 22:03

Children's safeguarding and social work.

Newsenmum · 30/09/2024 22:10

You could also look for some temp work on Office Angels and see if something else comes up through it?

are you a librarian? What do you do? I’d actually be really interested in working in a library.

Silvertulips · 30/09/2024 22:13

I work in an office (insurance) you’d be surprised at the skills that come in useful. You can easily learn IT every company has different programs so you’d have to learn anyway.

Silvertulips · 30/09/2024 22:14

Oh and my pus higher, I can buy extra holidays, free parking, free Christmas party, free tea / coffee overtime is paid double!

Holiday’s outside term time. Much more frequent as cheaper.

Would go back.

I know a few TAs that have moved on to become call handlers for the emergency services

WGACA · 30/09/2024 22:19

Tutoring? I’m hoping that random picture will go otherwise I will report my post. No idea where that came from - so sorry!

Silvertulips · 30/09/2024 22:27

I wouldn’t tutor - it’s a slog when you don’t have support, tax returns, supplies, there’s no money in it.

WGACA · 30/09/2024 22:29

There absolutely is! Tax return is easy and supplies are minimal. She can made double her TA salary or the same for half the workload.
