Remote jobs

nyah77 · 12/08/2024 18:00

Heyy, i was wondering if anyone could give me some advice, so I'm looking for a remote job and i just wanted to know if there are any moms out there that work remotely and have a little and how does it work or what would be the best remote jobs, for context my LO IS 3

Up until recently, I worked 99% remotely (travelled 2-3 times per year).

My child was in nursery so that I could concentrate on work & wouldn’t have been allowed or able to work efficiently and productively with them at home.

FriendlyNeighbourhoodAccountant · 12/08/2024 18:10

What do you mean how does it work? Are you wanting to work remotely while having the 3yo at home?

I work full time remotely but my contract says I can't be in charge of children at the same time, I wouldn't be able to work properly anyway if I did.

Thursdaygirl · 12/08/2024 18:12

What field of work are you interested in?

Eminybob · 12/08/2024 18:14

Working from home is not a replacement for childcare. DH and I both WFH but use appropriate childcare for the DC.

A 3 year old requires constant supervision. How do you expect to be able to provide that whilst also doing your job?

DreamW3aver · 12/08/2024 18:14

I thought just about everyone on here worked remotely nowadays, I see it on loads of threads, it s works as it has done for 4.5 years, what is it that you dont know about?

Thursdaygirl · 12/08/2024 18:28

this is very common, and very sensible!

nyah77 · 12/08/2024 18:33

@Eminybob Okay first of all i was asking for advice so there really is no need for the hostility! If you had read properly she will eventually be in nursery but due to personal circumstances she is not at the moment. It really does not pay you anything to be rude.

OP posts:
Eminybob · 12/08/2024 18:38

I wasn't being hostile I was giving an honest answer to your question.
And no where in your post does it mention she will be in nursery.

titchy · 12/08/2024 18:40

Why do you specifically want to WFH though? Most office jobs are hybrid now, but as others have said you still need childcare, in which case you could look for work outside of home.

Literally nowhere does it say anything about nursery in your post.

Your original post mentions nothing of nursery. Your second post says she will be in nursery “eventually” so there is some overlap between you wanting to start work and her starting nursery. Eminybob and others have pointed you cannot look after a small child while wfh, sometimes it’s contractually but even if not, you cannot work and supervise a little one. There’s nothing rude in stating that.

WFH works for me with a little one because we can use the nursery close to home and we don’t need to worry about getting caught in traffic on the way home. One of us will always wfh when DC is in nursery and they do pick up and drop off. They also manage if we are called because they’re ill. DC is still in nursery 8-6 though because of the hours we do. I like that when they go to school, they’ll already know some of the children because they’re at a local nursery rather than one near work.

Cosycover · 12/08/2024 19:15

I work from home and have been looking after my 2 kids during the holidays.

They are 11 and 6 though so a bit older.

If you can find a flexible employer it's definitely doable.

Are there employers who allow employees to work from home whilat looking after a 3 year old? I hope none of them are civil servants or public facing jobs

mandy55555 · 12/08/2024 19:24

I WFH and manage by doing majority of my worklod during naps and in evenings. I rarely have calls but if I do I work at a family
Members for that duration. My LO is pretty good at entertaining themselves at home, but will be going to nursery in a few months so I can get some time back. Depending on what job youre after it is definitely do able, should your employer allow it.

HotCrossBunplease · 12/08/2024 19:29

This is how it works.

You cannot work in paid employment while simultaneously looking after a preschool child. It does not matter if you are working at home or in an office.

I'm not detailing the thread, don't be ridiculous. I'm responding directly to a comment from the OP. If she wants to chastise other posters maybe she should make her first post clear.

What industry op? What experience and skills do you have?

I don't know.

My work don't mind. They are very flexible and family friendly. As long as you do your work they are happy.

longdistanceclaraclara · 12/08/2024 23:22

We are
Contractually obliged to have young kids in chikdxare while wfh. You can't work remotely and look after a 3yo

AuraBora · 12/08/2024 23:27

The odd hour here and there is fine but you can't really be considering working with your 3yo there all the time?
Totally unfair on the child and you will find it very hard to focus on work.
Even with an almost 7 year old I would never consider it.

What sort of work can you do while your attention is on a 3 year old?

PomPomChatton · 13/08/2024 07:43

I WFH full-time. I started by taking a part-time temp role, which gave me 6 months to prove to the company that I could do it successfully from home.

When my youngest was not yet at nursery, I had a student come round and take care of her whilst I was working. Cheaper than a nanny/other childcare and I was nearby if there was an emergency (which there never was, but you never know). Honestly, it was more stressful than dropping her off at nursery, so I switched to that once my role was made permanent.

I think you just need to start looking at Job adverts.

I don't have a 3 year old. My youngest is 6.

Yesterday they sat next to me playing lego whilst I did some work. They played alone when I was in meetings.

Don't know why people are getting wound up. It works fine for me. My work know about it and they don't care. My job gets done well.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 13/08/2024 08:00

The advantage to wfh is that you can use a nursery close to home and not have to worry about the commute. My job was remote during covid but now hybrid with 3 days in the office, I'm a design engineer. Its actually easier when they are in nursery as the hours are proper full days 8-5:30, when they hit school you have to organise wrap around care because school finishes at 3:15.

What is your skill set? Try a site like indeed searching for 'remote'. Don't join an mlm.
