Microsoft Teams - saying good morning

We had a new manager last year. A few months ago the manager insists on everyone using Microsoft Teams in the morning to ‘check in’ and say good morning to see everyone is ok. Some of us stopped using it as one colleague who was moonlighting never went on there as they were not working so why should we. We feel it is micromanagement to see we have logged on by 9am. The manager is saying we have to use it again.

It is clear if I am working as I have to respond to manage the team inbox so they always see my replies as I have to email to advise I will action the enquiry.

Anyone else have to do this? Other teams at work do not do this.

We do this in my workplace. I can't speak for your manager, but for us it's not micromanaging, it's more that we are a good team, we care for each other, and it's nice to say good morning, how are you, etc. We have a chat running all day and we all say goodnight on there as we leave too. It's just nice to connect with your team.

Not if you set it to 'busy' or 'do not disturb'.

Just to add, I'm not advocating this 😂

For most people, surely, if you are not there, your work just starts piling up in your absence.

I will ‘check in’ to avoid the backlash. It just seems pointless everyone says good morning and that is it. There is no team spirit. The manager is not keen on the team and it is obvious. I understand the safety aspect as some people live alone and could have an accident etc.

It's not surprising there's no team spirit if you all have this attitude. I'd hate to work in a team like this

Our boss has set up a work channel and a team chat channel so those of us that can do the inane to and fro can do so, while work stuff doesn't get lost within it.

There are a couple of people in the team who rarely appear in either, and some of us are just gobby. 😂

Still makes no sense. You had crap colleague so you all decided to behave similarly?

They are crap,if they hadn't learnt to say hi before vanishing.

We mostly say hi on Mondays and bye on Fridays, but not every day. We do when physically in the office (once a week) - at least, I wave if I don't actually say it. My manager and I speak a lot through the day, especially as I've only been there not quite two months.

My Teams status may say I'm inactive. It doesn't mean I'm not working. Some things I think better about on paper and when in the office, we often chat face-to-face about stuff - though at least people can see what's going on then, at least if they're also in.

I've found if you put the cat's food bowl next to the keyboard, ClothEars (for that's his name) will wander across the keyboard generating a random string of letters which autocorrect converts to words.
To many it will appear to be garbled rubbish, but working in Astrophysics one can easily get away with it.
And everybody thinks you're beavering away...

Hayliebells · 25/07/2024 20:01

It's easier to deal with the moonlighting colleague if everyone else is participating in the morning hello. If you're annoyed by the moonlighting, I'd just go along with what you've been asked to do. Well I'd go along with it anyway, but they may well be using it as evidence that your colleague, and only your colleague, isn't doing their job.

llamajohn · 25/07/2024 20:04

Just time your teams message?

Not if you set it to 'busy' or 'do not disturb'.

The nature of the job means that we generally don't do this.

Imustgoforarun · 25/07/2024 22:24

We do it. We say hello, moan about the weather and that’s it. Some don’t join in - up to them. We work remotely so it’s just trying to keep in touch.

Huifen · 25/07/2024 22:57

We do this - remote workforce. No one seems to mind saying good morning! It's useful because we have 5 core hours and the other 2 hours are flex so it lets you know who is starting at what time in case you need to talk to them.

it’s good to know though 😉
