Microsoft Teams - saying good morning

natel · 25/07/2024 08:53

We had a new manager last year. A few months ago the manager insists on everyone using Microsoft Teams in the morning to ‘check in’ and say good morning to see everyone is ok. Some of us stopped using it as one colleague who was moonlighting never went on there as they were not working so why should we. We feel it is micromanagement to see we have logged on by 9am. The manager is saying we have to use it again.

It is clear if I am working as I have to respond to manage the team inbox so they always see my replies as I have to email to advise I will action the enquiry.

Anyone else have to do this? Other teams at work do not do this.

Excuse me?

If you're in an office people can see you, if you are working from home I think people say hello at 9:00 and then go and have breakfast / go shopping / housework / go back to bed etc.

No we don't. We start work just like if we were in an office.

Are you a bit bitter about not WFH or something?

And this is why businesses need yo get everyone back in the office!

Lowerechelons · 25/07/2024 15:52

I actually think it's an important responsibility of the part of the employer, to check in with everyone and make sure they've at least made it through the night. I sometimes wonder how long it would before anyone noticed I hadn't, if I wasn't going to work.

Stand up?

The name goes back to being in an office and going round the team to give everyone a chance to say what they did, what they're going to do, and anything stopping them from getting done. You'd stand up when it was your turn, although if I stood up on the call the camera would miss my head.

thismummydrinksgin · 25/07/2024 16:18

We always say good morning, it's a 'hi' I'm here message basically. Same as if you walked into the office physically.

I should have worded that better. We were still working.

Still makes no sense. You had crap colleague so you all decided to behave similarly?

Galoop · 25/07/2024 16:43

I don't see the big deal, why shouldn't you all sadly good morning it is work afterall and just because you're wfh doesn't mean you should remain invisible. Also isn't it irrelevant what anyone does, if that's what your manager wants you do to do that's their prerogative

RampantIvy · 25/07/2024 17:46

VeloHostage · 25/07/2024 14:19

What I did yesterday ; what I'm doing today; what's blocking me. In 5 minutes round the room.

We don't do anything like that, thank goodness.

spikeandbuffy · 25/07/2024 17:49

@mm81736 no they don't
Some of us are perfectly capable of doing our job from home! Because management manage us - we are expected to explain lateness and time away from desk etc
Our job can 100% be done at home

Juicyapple44 · 25/07/2024 17:57

We use teams to say good morning, bye at end of day and chat throughout the day . I like it feels like we are part of a team. The managers don't need you to type morning etc see your status is green to know you are online they can just turn on the function within teams that's notifys you when someone logs on/off is free if they have been on the phone

Thursdaygirl · 25/07/2024 17:57

FrenchandSaunders · 25/07/2024 12:43

Surely everyone can see if you’re online by the little green dot (or not!) on teams 🤷🏼‍♀️

This! No need to call the register.

LlynTegid · 25/07/2024 18:00

Reasonable to have some method of saying "I am here at work'. Unreasonable for a manager not to act when someone is repeatedly not working when they should be.

HateMyNewJobSoMuch · 25/07/2024 18:01

My last work did this. Complete waste of time. We all worked remote. Nobody cared. It eas a pointless exercise. It was obvious if someone was online or not and if they were working or not.

It failed to create any sort if team feeling. Interestingly that company had toxic management. I left as quickly as I could.

Whether I’m in the office or WFH (we’re hybrid) most of us are clearing the overnight backlog at 9am, I’m sure there are some slackers somewhere but it would be very evident very quickly if I were gardening instead of working.

RampantIvy · 25/07/2024 18:02

It just seems pointless everyone says good morning and that is it. There is no team spirit.

We all know each other. When we finish work we always say goodbye as well. It really does help cement the feeling that we are a team.

I think some posters don't know how Teams works.

You can't just sign on and then push off to go shopping. Teams shows your status as away from the screen when the screen goes black. I suppose you could put do not disturb on, but then you would get rumbled when someone tried to message or call you.

I don't feel micromanaged at all. I always say good morning and goodbye when I am in the office so typing it out on screen feels no different.

Sethera · 25/07/2024 18:03

I don't think it's unreasonable - takes 5 seconds to type 'Good morning.' It's possibly a little pointless as you could say your good morning then fuck off for the day.

HelpMeGetThrough · 25/07/2024 18:05

If someone IMs me as soon as I've logged in, I always end up saying to myself "fuck off, I've just logged in!!!" as I want to check IMs and emails I've got overnight, as the majority of clients I'm working with are in different time zones.

RampantIvy · 25/07/2024 18:06

It's possibly a little pointless as you could say your good morning then fuck off for the day.

But you can't because your Teams status will show that you are away from the screen.

HelpMeGetThrough · 25/07/2024 18:06

But you can't because your Teams status will show that you are away from the screen.

That's easy to get around.

Thursdaygirl · 25/07/2024 18:08

Why the assumption that anyone who WFH is not actually working?

RampantIvy · 25/07/2024 18:09

HelpMeGetThrough · 25/07/2024 18:06

The nature of my job means that it would be discovered, but then I'm not a lazy piss taker anyway and love my job.

I think that it is very easy to spot who isn't pulling their weight in my team anyway.

HelpMeGetThrough · 25/07/2024 18:13

I think that it is very easy to spot who isn't pulling their weight in my team anyway.

It's dead easy, things just don't get done.

Not if you set it to 'busy' or 'do not disturb'.
