Probably been asked/ mentioned loads on here.. ( l know) I'm old lol.
But l see people mention their earnings etc .
Most of what I've read seem to be office related.. correct me if I'm wrong.. no malice or anything intended...
In the 70s l worked in an office for a year and l hated it.. yes l know things have changed.. but l just couldn't cope sitting at a desk all day typing.. it was boring and monotonous.
I actually wanted to be an outside
carpenter like my Dad but no one would take on a girl in them days.
I was a motorcyclist so became a motorcycle instructor and taught road safety to schools ( Green Cross code/cycling proficiency.. l loved working outside.
I then went to work at The Well Womens centre running an Endometriosis / adhesions support group on one evening a week.
I brought up my daughters as a single parent after.. working part time in a school.
But unfortunately l had to stop working young due to serverly becoming disabled after being thrown under a bus by an ex who got jailed for attempted murder.
( I'm still having operations and counselling 35 years later).

Just being curious.

Teacher, working in primary since 1996 and I hate it. Had enough now and really need to work somewhere else I think.

amyshep · 01/07/2024 17:50

Nurse since age 23

GOODCAT · 01/07/2024 22:20

Green Cross code/ cycling proficiency takes me back! That sounds like a fab job.

I work in an office, but always wanted to work outside but just in terms of my skills I get paid more this way. I want to find some retirement jobs that let me work outside.

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 01/07/2024 22:24

Strategic projects director at one of the big three house builders. Love the job, great people, great pay, benefits etc.

mrsfollowill · 01/07/2024 23:03

@Moier You seem to have had a very varied/interesting working life! I'm very boring and have worked in the same office for 35 years Shock Coming up for early retirement in the next 5 years I hope. I have enjoyed (and still do) my job- it has changed so much- nothing like when I started but I'm pretty good at it by now. I have known some of my colleagues all that time - we have gone from teenagers to mothers to grandmothers in some cases- it's strange but nice seeing peoples families grow- and that new baby someone brought in 30 years ago now having her own children!

InfoSecInTheCity · 01/07/2024 23:23

Cybersecurity, Governance, Risk & Compliance. 99.9% home based now days. Pretty varied role, lots of consulting with people on new bids and services, project implementations, risk assessment and so on. Have to be learning all the time because everything is constantly changing. Only real bad side to the role is that on 14% of U.K. cybersecurity roles are filled by women, its a massively male dominated role so have to fight to be recognised as being as good or as knowledgeable as the Menz.

Asset management (of things - not money)

I both love and hate WFH, it's quite isolating and I find I'm really not moving much which isn't great but there are also massive bonuses to it too like being home when DD gets in and my time is pretty much mine to use and plan as I want as long as I fit errands etc around meetings/business need and do my 7.5 hours at some point between 7am and 7pm.

My favourite job was working as an outdoor activity instructor, was fabulous outside all the time and working with children which I've always loved but unfortunately to pay and family life got in the way

I quit college with no real idea of what I wanted to do. Had a few dead end jobs then got into the call centre of an insurance co. Started studying accountancy at evening classes, a year in I applied for - and got - an accounts assistant job with the same company. Fast forward 20 years and I was a finance manager for a consultancy business, working 3 days a week, partly from home. Loved the role, the company, the people. Great work/life balance, no desire to try to progress further. 2 years ago became very sick/disabled so have stepped down and now work one day a week from home as an accounts assistant for the same company.

I love it great company lovely team

RAFOfficer · 02/07/2024 00:08

Twenty years in the RAF, but not all as an Officer! I’ve had quite a few different roles and worked in different places, obviously some better than others. It’s not what I had planned when I was growing up but it’s been a really interesting career, I’ve made some amazing friends, and I’m glad I did it. Won’t know what to do with myself when I leave!

bennyonthedispatch · 02/07/2024 01:07

Controller/dispatcher for a large police force. We arr assigned an area for that shift, assess the incidents, prioritise, risk assess etc & dispatch cops. While they are en route, we conduct checks on addresses & nominals, where relevant and pass these on the police radio. We take updates for incidents over the radio and are constantly reacting to what the cops need/updating incidents.

The job is very varied - we can be dealing with someone parked over a driveway or a low level neighbour dispute one minute then have to immediately dispatch cops to an ongoing domestic or knife incident the next. Sometimes we have 50+ incidents to manage & sometime 2 or 3.

I love it. Working shifts around the family is an absolute killer though.

Redglitter · 02/07/2024 01:13

Police Despatcher. Love it albeit it's stressful & can be mentally exhausting

bennyonthedispatch · 02/07/2024 01:14

High five @Redglitter!

Civil servant for over 30 years. Now a full time foster carer

DaftyLass · 02/07/2024 01:17

I manage a cannabis retail outlet.
I love all the opportunities to learn, and I'm very supported by upper management.
I have one of the most stunning commutes I could hope for, work with a great team, and get to meet all sorts of people in the industry.

BobbyBiscuits · 02/07/2024 01:37

I feel for you, the situation with abuse is terrible.
I left my career in the film industry due to my ex who abused me and threatened to kill my boss. I was so shattered I never had a permanent job again.

Ocharina · 02/07/2024 01:55

Musician.

My earnings vary massively - sometimes it pays really well, not always for the bits that are the hardest work. It's never boring though and genuinely no two days are the same. Only downside is it can be difficult to carve out time for music I really want to play because of someone is paying me I have to work on the music they want me to play.

Moier · 02/07/2024 22:48

Brilliant.. love reading them all.
@DaftyLass

Loki64 · 02/07/2024 23:17

Marketing exec for a fashion brand.
I love it.
Wfh one day a week, office based but get a lot of time out of the office each week as manage photoshoots, video content, trips to italy for buying/photoshoots.

Jenala · 02/07/2024 23:22

Social worker. Admin I do at home or in the office, whichever I fancy. Lots of travel around the county to do home visits. I'm in the lower key end of social work now, and part time, so although it can be incredibly stressful at times it's mostly not too bad, and it feels meaningful. I can manage my own diary and hours as long as I get them in each week. With young kids this is a huge benefit.
