McDonald's for a job interview - no show

*So my 18 year old DS found a job vacancy on 'McDonald's Careers' website and applied for a role at a local McDs restaurant last week After filling in the online form and answering a ton of questions the AI bot thing said they wanted him to come in for an interview and gave 3 options; he opted for one today at 130pm. So off he went today and got to the place and went up the counter, and said he was here for an interview. Staff who answered said there was no appointment in the diary. He then asked to speak to the manager; no manager was available. He was asked to scribble his mobile number on a tissue and they said someone would get back to him.

That was it! He had to turn around and go home! This was extremely annoying as he had prepped for the interview, paid the train fare to get there and it was all a complete waste of time.

Does anyone have any experience of this happening to them or to a YP in their life? I seriously doubt if anyone will call him back from the sounds of it. Just so disheartening for him as he is shy and really went out of his comfort zone to go to the interview. I feel angry on his behalf and feel like posting something on SM to name and shame the branch of McDs. But my DS does not wish me to do that so I will hold back but just wondered if anyone has any advice on how to get to the bottom of what has happened here.

All the exchanges were done via the mchire.comom_ website and he has loads of emails from them confirming the interview, one even an hour before ;)

Hello. My son works at McDonalds. He really likes it - nice bunch of people and pretty easy money while he’s studying. But their recruitment process was a nightmare. DS persisted and got there in the end but it took a good while and was very frustrating. He’s glad he did though.

Thanks for the information that is great to hear for your ds. It's tricky as you just want your kids to have a 'fair' recruitment process 😉

Exactly. It’s a missed opportunity I think for them - they are good employers once you’re in but….

I have a theory that they have a pipeline approach to recruitment. So they permanently say they have positions so they always have youngsters applying but until they actually need them they stall the process. 🤷‍♀️

When I worked there late 90s you could get an application form from the manager in the restaurant (I just walked in and asked). Not sure if you still can. There was a noticeable amount of managers at the Clacket Lane one yesterday working on fry station etc - I did wonder if now they've ditched till workers for the computers if they've not kept as many staff... Do Burger King still have till workers? He might want to try there if Maccers is cutting back.

My mum works for them and offers to help people do their applications as apparently the online system is so shit it often goes wrong and means they miss out on great potential employees!

My dd went for an "interview". She ended up working for 2hours. They said they would let her know. Nothing. How rude.

Wow that's so rubbish as well. Sorry to hear that. It does test your resilience though to 'bounce back' doesn't it?

Sounds like a misunderstanding.

DS applied for McDonald's several months ago when there was a vacancy and was then informed they weren't looking for anyone. Okay then🤔

Just sounds like a misunderstanding honestly OP. These things happen. I’ve been let down by all sorts of jobs and had interviews scheduled last minute.

If it’s such a faff to get there does he really want to be working there?

I'd send an email to the store manager or phone up and get him to explain that he'd applied to a job and was offered an interview but when he turned up the manager wasn't there, be polite and factual, (keep emotion out of it). It's disheartening, but these things do happen. When my daughter turned up for her first interview ever at Boots for a xmas temp job as a 16 years old, no one was expecting her. They couldn't locate the manager, however an emplyee offered for her to sit and wait, which she did. She waited well over an hour until a managaer was available. Anyway her resiliance paid off she got the xmas job and also got kept on for a permenant role having proved herself in the new year. She didn't get rude or exasperated (even if she was feeling it inside).

Even when kids get there first, second etc jobs, they aren't always treated great unfortunately (my kids have a few under there belt now) but its good practice for proper jobs in the future and builds reliliance. Everything is a learning oportunity, the good and bad.
