Hello!

wanting to request to go 3 days a week in school after maternity but nervous to ask incase I can’t afford it.

does anyone happen to know what take home pay is a month on an upper pay scale 3 teacher? I do have TLR but without that is fine I just want a rough idea! Not in London 🙃 thanks!

It’s difficult to know what it would be as we dont know what deductions you make - pension? Student loan?
If you multiply your usual full time net pay by 0.6 then your take home pay for 3 days will be at least that

Use this with the teacher pay scales figures. 3 days is a 0.6 FTE (full time equivalent).
Each day is called a 0.2
x 5 days = a week.

Pension is usually like 200 quid a month as is student loan but would presumably be less on less money?

I work 4 days and I'm UPS3.

I take home £2137 a month.

Twinkl have a calculator that you can put all your info in. It's pretty close.

Do watch out if you are undertaking a subject or other responsibility , you might end up still being expected to fulfil all the responsibilities but on a part time salary.

I am doing exactly as viques says re doing part time management - p/t pay for all the management! Avoid if you can but I’m not sure how!!

Mine was about £1800 I think.

Yeah I am head of dept and I’ve got a document that says they can’t reduce your TLR but I guess I have to convince them I can still do my job on a part time basis!

It's a bit sad that you are a higher level teacher but cannot work this out yourself! Crikey, it's not rocket science.

@Skykidsspy I went through this recently and I simply said 'which 20% of the job do you not want me to do?' they quickly changed the pay.

They can pro-rate your TLR - they did with mine when I went part-time. STPCD states they can adjust your responsibilities accordingly, though.

I had to do 100% of the HOD role over 4 days with 0.8 TLR. I didn’t complain as I knew I’d be returning to full time hours when my son went to school. Short term pain, long-term gain.

@lineandsinker sorry but the fact that so many teachers are like you and willing to literally work for free makes the conditions worse for everyone.

I’d love to have fought the good fight, as it were, but unfortunately being forced to become single parent meant I had more of a selfish approach. Capitalism, and all that.

Anyway, there’s no appetite in the unions for fighting over part-time TLRs. Bigger fish to fry.

Oh this is so frustrating! I have been sent a document by the school bursar though saying that they can’t do that and she said that recently one of the union reps had challenged it and he got his full time TLR on 0.8 so hopefully that’s good news for me!!

Mine is an LEA school, so not sure if that had anything to do with my lack of success in challenging it. Like I said, I just accepted it as I knew it was a 2 year thing.

The concession I got was more PPA. Think the head felt guilty that he couldn’t action my request.
