Something to carry all the stuff in?

I know this has been asked a billionty times before sorry.....
Best thing to cart the work stuff, the personal stuff, the work laptop, lunch bag etc back and forth to work. No car/bus etc - walking both ways everyday.
Ive looked at backpacks/smart work bags with laptop sleeves but by the time Ive got everything in........... I suspect it will be really heavy and burdensome. Ive used a shopping trolley for years (for shopping!) but the wheels wear out SO quickly. The trolleys that cost about £20 arent hardwearing at all. And they arent the stylish professional look Im aiming for in the office!

So I was pondering something like this.......... a wheeled trolley bag. But the wheels on this one are little - Im not sure it will cope well with our pavements (plus the wheels are likely to be noisy)

This one? For £40 - Im still not entirely convinced about the wheels though. And its not possible to fold the handle down if the bag is on the frame - so although not as old ladyish as most shopping trolleys, it will still be super visible in the office next to my desk.

This is the one Im drooling over because look at those awesome wheels (plus it can be hooked onto the back of a bike)....... but also look at the price!

Any other suggestions?

How far are you walking? I tried the elegant wheeled bag approach and it knackered my shoulder, so I reverted to a good rucksack (plus not bringing all the "just in case" dead weight items).

PutThatDownNow · 06/03/2024 17:01

I have no recommendations. But if you have storage at the office perhaps think about what you can store there? I have started duplicating some items eg headphones, chargers. So I have home sets and office sets. It is helping a bit with the amount of stuff I have to carry.

Yellowbananasarebetterthangreen · 06/03/2024 17:01

30 minutes morning and evening - a total of 3 miles.

Even with just the basics....... I end up being loaded like a donkey. Work stuff, personal stuff, laptop (and its accessories), lunch and water bottle.

Ah yes - storage at the office. That is a good idea - chargers, headphones etc can definitely go in there. Ditto an umbrella. And spare sanpro/other useful bits - but that still leaves almost everything else.

I take everything with me too but I don't find that I have that much stuff. I have a charger at the office so just carry my laptop around. I don't have work stuff other than my notebook and a pen and I have a small make up bag, water bottle and keys/phone otherwise. It helps that I don't take lunch with me but I guess the question is how much are you carrying around just in case vs the essentials.

Yellowbananasarebetterthangreen · 06/03/2024 17:16

Hmm yes..... I guess I could shrink down my work stuff and personal stuff a bit......
But due to the expense of buying lunch out and dietary requirements - I always take a packed lunch. I dont think Ive got many just in case things tbh - Ill have a look and make a list!

I walk 5 miles a day on the course of my commute and use a Rains backpack (waterproof is important if you're carrying paperwork!)

Mine is basically laptop, some A4 papers/pad and lunch though. I keep lots of stuff in my desk drawer, spare tights, multi pack crisps, pack of apples for the week, tissues etc so I don't have to carry them daily.

horseymum · 06/03/2024 17:54

Don't fill your water bottle, cuts down weight.

ohpumpkinseeds · 06/03/2024 18:20

I have a really long (2hr) commute. My work bag has:

  • a 200ml (that's really small!) water bottle
  • notebook and pen
  • laptop
  • little pouch with chewing gum, tissues, glasses wipes, lip balm
  • a very streamlined make up bag as I do my make up on the train
  • phone and AirPods
  • lunch

My work locker has:

  • reusable coffee cup
  • tea / coffee / hot chocolate
  • cereal bars
  • knife fork and spoon
  • wet wipes and cleaning wipes
  • bag of paracetamol sanitary towels etc

My work bag a Parfois one and I like I can wear it cross body or hold the handles. It's narrow enough to fit between my feet on the tube. And actually, I can fit a change of clothes and mini wash bag in there if I need to for an overnight stay at work.

I just use a regular backpack for hiking rather than an official laptop bag. The hiking backpack has waist straps and chest straps which help with distributing the weight so it’s not all pulling on my shoulders.
I must look for a black more stylish one …if they exist.
sometimes I also use a small cross body bag for wallet and phone so it’s easy to access those instead of pulling all the backpack off.

DNLove · 06/03/2024 19:18

I'm totally bewildered as to how much personal or work stuff you could be carrying each day.

pudseypie · 06/03/2024 19:25

I travel a lot for work so often have to carry all my work stuff, plus wheel a suitcase. I have a Krozer black laptop backpack which has a compartment for a laptop and great storage for everything else. The top also sits open when you unzip it so its easy to get stuff out / in when loading it up. It's black and looks super smart, and I've walked miles round airports with it, lugging a suitcase too! From Amazon, wasn't expensive, around £25.

pudseypie · 06/03/2024 19:26

Oh, and I keep my purse, phone, keys in a small black cross body bag so I can get to them easily, like a pp said

Yellowbananasarebetterthangreen · 06/03/2024 19:31

@DNLove I agree. But honestly....... ugh this morning I was a donkey.
My bag with my work stuff and personal stuff actually isnt big or heavy at all.
Laptop with mouse, headset etc is currently in the laptop carry case given to me by work.
Lunch and water bottle - neither of which fit well into the "my bag" mentioned above. Obviously yes I could just have a bigger backpack........ and could put the laptop in that. But Ill still probably end up carrying my lunch separately (cos lunch boxes are often bulky.
And I shed clothes! I leave wearing a light blouse and raincoat (and end up really hot by the time I arrive - even today and it was quite cold this morning). But then with just a light blouse Ill end up cold in the office so Ill need a cardigan.
Potentially on the way home Ill end up hot again - so then Ill end up carrying the rain coat and the cardigan. And the laptop. And all the other stuff.

OK that's the 55 cm there's a 45 cm same probably better. Same page.

Yellowbananasarebetterthangreen · 06/03/2024 19:40

@heldinadream Ive looked at those but as with the first one I linked in my op - I fear the teeny tiny wheels wont cope with all the pavement, curbs and potholes between home and work. Plus they make such a lot of noise as people drag them along

OP posts:
pleasecallmeback · 06/03/2024 19:41

I'd go for the cabin bag suggested by @heldinadream
It looks smart and would be really easy to transport to and from work.
Plus you can use it for weekends away when you're not working.

pleasecallmeback · 06/03/2024 19:43

You don't drag them along either, they wheel by your side, and they're not noisy.

SulkySeagull · 06/03/2024 19:44

I use one of the padded M&S tote bags, they fit so much in and on trend

wonderingwhatlifemeans · 06/03/2024 19:49

I really like this one!!!

Something to carry all the stuff in?
wonderingwhatlifemeans · 06/03/2024 19:50

It is quite expensive but united do similar but a bit cheaper.

wonderingwhatlifemeans · 06/03/2024 19:51

Uniker!

Blarn · 06/03/2024 20:02

I use a Puma backpack which is very rectangle and flat but fits laptop, charger, headphones, large metal water bottle, thermos of coffee sometimes plus small make up bag and handcream. It also has all of that plus a change of clothes and shampoo and conditioner for overnight stays. With room to cram in a sandwich. I think you need to really look at what you are taking in each day and really decide if it is all important. A good backpack is surely much more comfortable than a heavy small wheeled case. They tip on kerbs! They can get soaking wet in heavy rain from all the puddle splashing!
