Something to carry all the stuff in?

I know this has been asked a billionty times before sorry.....
Best thing to cart the work stuff, the personal stuff, the work laptop, lunch bag etc back and forth to work. No car/bus etc - walking both ways everyday.
Ive looked at backpacks/smart work bags with laptop sleeves but by the time Ive got everything in........... I suspect it will be really heavy and burdensome. Ive used a shopping trolley for years (for shopping!) but the wheels wear out SO quickly. The trolleys that cost about £20 arent hardwearing at all. And they arent the stylish professional look Im aiming for in the office!

So I was pondering something like this.......... a wheeled trolley bag. But the wheels on this one are little - Im not sure it will cope well with our pavements (plus the wheels are likely to be noisy)
Buy it Luggage 28L Backpack with 2 Wheels - Black | Cabin luggage | Argos

This one? For £40 - Im still not entirely convinced about the wheels though. And its not possible to fold the handle down if the bag is on the frame - so although not as old ladyish as most shopping trolleys, it will still be super visible in the office next to my desk.
Sour Lemon 45L Folding Shopping Trolley on 2 Wheels, Lightweight Folding Shopping Cart, Large Shopping Trolleys, Stair Climbing Shopping Cart, Grocery Trolley : Amazon.co.uk: Home & Kitchen

This is the one Im drooling over because look at those awesome wheels (plus it can be hooked onto the back of a bike)....... but also look at the price!

Any other suggestions?

@wonderingwhatlifemeans you are a wonder thankyou! Thats EXACTLY the sort of thing Im after. A rolling backpack with sensibly sized wheels that have a hope of coping on pavements/curbs. And nowhere near as huge or expensive as my previous dreamy option (which would still solve many of my shopping struggles way better than the cheap old lady style I currently have)
Assuming the wheels are durable.......... it looks perfect! Spot on. 😍 Totally what I need.

Not sure if someone’s said this yet, but if anyone wants a shopper (or if you still think this is a good option, OP) but hates crap wheels or wheels giving out… rollerblade wheels are your answer. I only buy luggage that has them, shoppers that have them, etc.

Here’s one for £39.

I'm another one who thinks you need to rationalise your stuff. Sorry @Yellowbananasarebetterthangreen

I also have to carry a laptop but have sorted out a charger which lives at work. I use my AirPods for calls/ meetings. Surely the trek to your locker is worth saving your bag/ making you more agile on your commute?

I use a smartphone as a diary/ calendar/ wallet/ lunchtime entertainment device.

Lunchbag/ Water bottle/ 2 cans of diet coke each day (the diet coke doesn't come home!) If I drive to work sometimes I stash a multipack of DC in my locker.

Some work clothing (socks/ hat).

Spare san pro (but after this thread, I think I will start leaving it in my locker along with my spare phone charger).

I fit all this into a 21 litre osprey rucksac or the front bag for my Brompton.

@Yellowbananasarebetterthangreen I really don’t think you’re taking that much stuff or that this is a big deal.
I use a standard laptop rucksack and take laptop/chargers/2 phones/ calculator/ lunch box/fruit/ water bottle / reusable coffee cup/ small make up bag/ notebook/ maybe a few papers etc. / kindle/headphones. Easy peasy don’t over think it.
Id rather have the weight balanced on my back than awkwardly pulling it along behind me (plus honestly I think you’d look a bit mental turning up at an office with a wheely bag everyday).
Also how are you using a paper diary and not outlook or sim.?!

Papillon23 · 06/03/2024 22:42

So into my rucksack for work I can fit:

Phone
Headphones
Battery block
Tea tin
Water bottle
Sunglasses
Laptop charger
Small headphones (instead of headset)
Miniature wireless mouse
Laptop
Laptops charger
Notebook
Pencil case
Purse
Kindle/book
Another pencil case full of medicines
A tiny pouch with lipsil etc.
Cardigan.

Edited because I forgot that I have to take a mug. (I only go into the office twice a month so nowhere to store anything.)

Lunchbox on top is a squeeze admittedly!

I cycle to the station.

Honestly, walking back and forth with a Wheely bag every day for 3 miles sounds incredibly annoying. Are you sure there's no way you can squeeze it down into a rucksack?

Yellowbananasarebetterthangreen · 06/03/2024 22:59

Quite a lot of people have one of these........
Buy it Luggage 28L Backpack with 2 Wheels - Black | Cabin luggage | Argos So walking into work with one really isnt a biggie cos lots do. The difference is - they arrive by car so the little wheels are only used on dodgy surfaces for a short distance and then its the indoor work floors which are smooth/carpet.

I walk the same distance into town and home again with a shopping trolley (old lady style!) at least once a week. So much easier than carrying stuff on my shoulder/back so that isnt the issue. But what I want is something more stylish/less old lady.
@wonderingwhatlifemeans read the brief and perfectly supplied the answer!!
Ill definitely look at getting one of those in the future. For now....... Ive ordered one of these. London Shopping Trolley, Folding Handle Trolley on Wheels with Durable Bag and Foldable Design, Max Capacity 25kg, 45L (Black) : Amazon.co.uk: Home & Kitchen

Fascinating to see what other people deem essential - actually lots of you carry stuff that would never be in my bag.

@ExcitingRicotta how do I use a paper diary? - I open it, I write in it lol. Its a slim A5 notebook no thicker than a kids exercise book.
Using a device as a way to remember things wouldnt work for me at all. Plus Im keen to reduce my screen usage.

@Yellowbananasarebetterthangreen do you not get calendar invites etc through email? Do you then copy them off screen into your diary?

greatwesternmailman · 06/03/2024 23:10

I walk to work (15 mins each way) and traipse around a lot. I know you’re not after a rucksack but I have a Matein rucksack from Amazon with a lunch section and it’s been a game changer. I do feel a bit like a year 7 on their way to school when it’s full but it’s not absurdly heavy. I carry a laptop, charger, notebook and diary, small pencil case, pouch for personal bits, phone charger, lunch, a water bottle and a pop-up Stojo coffee cup. I also carry the Uniqlo crossbody bag for essentials like keys, wallet, phones etc and can fit a heck of a lot in there, too.

greatwesternmailman · 06/03/2024 23:13

Oh and I can usually fit gym kit and trainers in there too if I squeeze!

Yellowbananasarebetterthangreen · 06/03/2024 23:14

@ExcitingRicotta yup. I write them down. With a pen. In a paper diary. And then I attend them (meetings, doctors appointments, hair appointments, meetups with friends etc). And the details of allsorts of other things too - shopping lists, events I might go to, things I need to remember to do for the kids, list of chores I ought to do tomorrow etc.
Ive no idea how outlook would solve that task for me. Not a clue. Ive no doubt it works for many but its not a solution for me.

@Yellowbananasarebetterthangreen Glad to be of help. As a teacher I have a rucksack full of stuff and a tote bag and I am often cramming in at least one set of books in as well so I must admit I am coveting the first bag and once my finances are in better order I may just get it!

NotFastButFurious · 07/03/2024 07:39

3 miles in 30minutes is running pace, how fast do you walk?!?
I have a decent laptop backpack, lunch in a separate bag and get changed and showered at work if I walk in.

Yellowbananasarebetterthangreen · 07/03/2024 09:45

@NotFastButFurious 1.5 miles in 30 mins and same again at home time.

@wonderingwhatlifemeans for sure go for the one you suggested with bigger wheels not the one with tiny wheels I found! I think they are a fantastic option for teachers cos they inevitably have to cart a lot about.

Can you get some sort of bag or caddy for your locker so everything can go in there but be moved easily to your desk? It’s different for me as I don’t WFH much and have a fixed desk but I keep as much as possible at work to minimise what I do carry. So I keep at work

empty water bottle
calculator, pens etc
laptop and phone chargers
black cardigan that can go over anything (we aren’t public facing and no dress code though)
Small make-up bag with plasters, deodorant etc
For reading at lunchtime I use the kindle app on my phone, you could just keep a book at work if you don’t use a smartphone
