Leaving date

When handing in notice, can a last date of employment be a Sunday if you/the organisation don't work a Sunday? It would prevent a gap of employment on a CV. My org are pushing back on this and want a Friday but that would mean 2 days gap on CV and obviously slightly more pay, pension etc.

I really wouldn’t be concerned about 2 days gap on a CV! I don’t even put exact employment dates on my CV, just month and year

MumMumMumMumMumMumMum · 15/02/2024 13:47

What? No, your last working day needs to be that, a working day. How is a weekend a gap in employment on a CV? If you're not contracted to work weekends how does that affect your pay and pension?!

stayathomer · 15/02/2024 13:48

Does your cv not just say June to June or June to may or the like? I don’t know that it’d bother employers that much!!

Snowchoc · 15/02/2024 13:49

Yes, absolutely, state the last day before you start the new job.

Bondibeechtree · 15/02/2024 13:50

It matters when you work with children as they need exact dates to ensure no gaps. Gaps have to be justified. I don't mind justifying the gap but I don't want to have to bother for the next 25 years for the sake of a weekend.

How does this work practically? On my last day at a job, I've always had to give back my pass or equipment etc.

MumMumMumMumMumMumMum · 15/02/2024 13:51

But a weekend isn't a gap. It's a weekend. You finished oen job on the Friday and started a new job on the Monday. Tou don't work weekends so it's not a gap.

SheilaFentiman · 15/02/2024 13:52

Can you finish old job on a Thu and start new job on a Fri, then?

It's a gap in terms of dates though and it will be questioned for every job I ever get as it has to be for the type of role it is. It's a pain in the backside.

Unfortunately starting date would be set

I don't think it will matter for that reason (and I do those checks), but you should still put the day before you start the new job. If you're paid monthly it will affect your pay and your pension.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 15/02/2024 13:55

Firstly, 2 days isn't a gap. Regardless of working with children or not.

If you're adamant you want don't want to finish on a Friday and start on a Monday, you can try and change your end and start days to a Thursday/Friday or Monday/Tuesday etc.

Your last working day, for notice purposes, is the last day you work for them, not 2 days later.

EDIT cross posted with OPs further posts - can you ask the new employer if they will start you officially on the Saturday and not the Monday?

trooc · 15/02/2024 13:55

2 days is days off not a CV gap.

The same way as if you took annual leave for the last week employed. You'd hand it back on your last day at work.

But it is a gap. Nobody sits checking if it's a weekend or not. It's a gap.

It might help if you feel comfortable to say what role you do in terms of people offering advice from the same role. I'm a SW so it might be different but we have to explain gaps too and I've never had any issues with having last day as the Friday and 1st day on the Monday. Could you speak with HR? I left my last role on a Friday and started new on the Monday and HR reported the exchange as the Sunday for continuous service, but it was transferring from one local authority to another so it might be different for you

BaroqueInterlude · 15/02/2024 13:59

Anyone querying a two day gap between finishing one job and starting the next would have to be stark raving bonkers in my opinion.

But that's the way it works in my sector. Every gap has to be justified.

OP posts:
Hercisback · 15/02/2024 14:02

I likely work in the same sector. It really isn't that strict. People understand weekends exist.

I have a two week "gap" from one school who say I finished at the start of a holiday, and starting a new school after the holiday. No one cares. Just lie about the dates if you're that bothered.

trooc · 15/02/2024 14:03

It doesn't really matter if it's a weekend. 2 days between jobs is obviously days off.

It honestly doesn't. I do those checks and a gap of a few days or even a couple of weeks wouldn't raise alarms.

You should still be able to set you last daybwhen it suits you though.

SheilaFentiman · 15/02/2024 14:03

Surely the justification, if asked, is simply: finished on a Friday, started on a Monday.

Bondibeechtree · 15/02/2024 14:03

Thanks everyone.

For the next 25 years

It's not as if you have to say it every day for 25 years.

This is such an overthink.
