Thinking about my future, what jobs do you do?

What jobs do you as a semi-SAHP do? How do you make time for a job while still being around for school holidays and being able to drop them off/pick them up from school?

If you work full-time, how does that work?

semi SAHP

so you mean work part time?

Brunette1901 · 25/01/2024 16:28

I mean you're the primary carer for your kids still. So school drop off's and picks up. Being off when they've got school holidays. Teacher training days. Being there for when they need doctors/dentist etc. I say semi-SAHP because I can't imagine you could work full-time if you didn't have any help from family/friends or paid for clubs etc.

You mean a school hours job

There aren’t many. The usual options are working in a school in some way, or self employed (eg freelance version of previous role, or cleaner/dog walker etc)

People who work full time, or part time but not school hours only, have childcare - wrap around at school, after school nanny, holiday clubs. Sometimes grandparents.

Do you have any idea in terms of cost for those wrap around at school clubs? Sorry for asking, I don't know any one else with kids.

Actually there’s a thread about this right now. Will see if I can find it. The Op was saying it was costing her £25/day per child (that’s before school from 7.30 and after school to 6pm) and that was thought on the high side.

But if you look at the website of some primary schools near you they may list their wraparound fees

There’s also often childminders who will do wraparound care (including school drop and collect) but the good ones get booked up early

You are describing a dilemma that every working parent has.

What stage are you at - it may help you get more specific answers.

In general though - don't worry. Whatever situation/work type you have you can usually work something out. Employers generally have to be flexible for working parents (to a degree).

Lots of work places now offer Agile or flexible working where you can work some or all days at home which makes the work/life balance much easier to manage.

Personally I went Part-time when the kids were born and until i got divorced then had to go back to full time but they were teens by then so full time much easier!

I am a professional acupuncturist. I set my own hours.

I work 28 hours a week, mostly from home. I am an analyst for a financial services company. My child does after school club once a week so I have one set day a week where I can definitely work from the office. Cost for after school club is about £13 a day.

I am lucky in that I have a job where I can organise my own diary to a certain extent, and things are easier now my DS is 9 and is ok walking home himself.

Things were a bit harder when he was younger/pre covid as i did not work from home and he needed dropping off and picking up. I worked fewer hours (24 over 4 days) and he went to after school club 4 times a week.

Prior to THAT he was in a private nursery 3 days a week and I worked 21 hours a week over 3 days....:..

In school holidays he is generally able to please himself now, play with friends etc, though in the past he has done holiday club which was about £25 a day, and I used annual leave in school holidays.

I worked Friday Saturday Sunday nights

I work term time in a college and put ds into breakfast club. It costs me £10 a week and he's already had his breakfast at home. I just need it for childcare to get to work by 8am. My eldest picks him up from school twice a week and I puck him up three times a week.
OH is term time but works long hours so can never do the school run unless he has a PD day.
