Private school wrap around care fees

Dear mums, I hope you are all well. I was wondering if you have a DD in a private school in West London and if you are happy to share the charges for Breakfast club and after school club. The school my DD goes to have recently increased the wrap around care fees and I wanted to find out how much other schools are charging. Thank you for your time.

I’m not in London but answering for the midlands to get the thread going. We’ve typically paid £4-5 per hour (includes toast and cereal at breakfast club).

Ive found the same at state and private.

OpheliaPlum · 24/01/2024 06:00

Also not London. £5 for breakfast club and £15 after school.

ParsnipAndPoppy · 24/01/2024 06:03

About £7-8 per hour. So breakfast club plus after school club until 6pm would be around £20, more if you want an actual before or after school activity club. They’re usually around £10-12 an hour.

LoudSnoringDog · 24/01/2024 06:04

Not private ( state primary)
£6.50

Workingmumtwentyfour · 24/01/2024 22:27

Thanks everyone, so we are paying £7.40 for breakfast club from 7:30-815 and the after school charges are as follow
4 – 4.15pm: £3.90 per day (Pupils collected after 4.15pm will incur normal charges)
4 – 6pm: £18.00 per day
4 – 5pm: £12.00 per day
5 – 6pm: £13.00 per day

so as a full time teacher, I need to put my kids in both breakfast and after school club. This is costing £25.40 a day times 5 days a week. Also the school fees were increased by 10% in September 2023 . I don't know how we can manage these high fees. As it stands, after tax, I end up getting just about the minimum wage.

Sounds bonkers!

Private school here but outside London. Breakfast club is free. ASC is £5 4-5 and £5 5-6 to include dinner.

mnahmnah · 24/01/2024 22:35

Breakfast club here is £8 and afterschool is £15 for one hour, £17 until 6.00. It is a state primary in a normal suburb of a small city in the North. No idea why it’s so expensive but it’s a small fortune if you have two or three kids!

cestlavielife · 24/01/2024 22:41

What about the child's father? Is it joint income?
Send to state school save the fees

Labtastic · 24/01/2024 22:45

Wow - no charge for anything after school with us! Breakfast is a fiver I think from 7.30-8am and can then drop off from 8am for no cost. Full after school care until 6pm also at no extra cost.

Are there no after school clubs (activities I mean, not just care) that are included in the fees?! I find that really surprising for a private school

minipie · 24/01/2024 22:50

Private SW London here

Pretty similar costs to yours - but 1) school starts at 8am so breakfast club is less and 2) there’s quite a few free after school clubs the school runs which mean you don’t need to pay for the full wraparound, just the bit after the club finishes. Does your school not have this?

Are you teaching at the school?

Workingmumtwentyfour · 24/01/2024 23:55

I don't teach at the same school! I wish I did as I would have got 30% off the fees!

Workingmumtwentyfour · 24/01/2024 23:57

They don't have a free after school club activities for every day and even if they do, they get filled so quickly so if you are 1 minute late to the sign up , you won't get a place! Other activities are paid for and my DD doesn't enjoy some.

I guess moving outside London is the way to go!

Thanks for this. Do you mind me asking what is the area you are sending yours to school to?
I recently wrote to the school and the response wasn't convincing at all so I am trying to find out how the charges compares to other similar schools in the area.

My husband also works full time so we won't get home anytime before 6pm! The state schools in the area is overcrowded with almost 33 kids in each class!

So your childcare costs are 12.50 a day each, shared cost. Not so bad?
It is not just on you alone

cestlavielife · 25/01/2024 14:13

And you are both getting pension contri butions paid holiday etc .

Meadowfinch · 25/01/2024 14:15

That sounds like a lot. I have a ds in an independent school in the south, not London. We don't use breakfast club, but after school, from 4pm- 5.15pm is free prep, and 5.15-6pm is £3.50.

The local state primary charges £15 a day per child for after school club, 3.30-6pm including a snack - usually toast and a piece of fruit.

cadburyegg · 25/01/2024 14:17

My dc are in a state school in East Anglia. They don't go to breakfast club but do go to after school club which is £11.50 each for 5pm collection and £17 each for 6pm collection which isn't much less than what you are paying.

MissyB1 · 25/01/2024 14:19

Once they get to senior school age it won’t be such an issue, private senior schools often don’t finish until between 4-5:30 anyway, then there will be homework club or activities as well. It’s short term pain, but yes after a price hike of 10% I can see why you aren’t happy.

InTheRainOnATrain · 25/01/2024 14:24

After school club is £10 per half hour. Early bird £12 per session. I think there’s a small discount if you sign up termly.

Workingmumtwentyfour · 25/01/2024 15:36

That is just for one child! for two of them comes to £50 a day!

Workingmumtwentyfour · 25/01/2024 15:37

Counting down the days!

Definitely move them to a state school if you can’t afford the fees. It’s not worth going into debt over. Does your husband not contribute towards the out of school care?
