Ours is half the time in the office half the time at home. Just wondering what the state of play is at other companies.

DH and I both work in creative industries. His company is two days a week in the office and they prefer teams to have a core day. He works 8-4 so he can collect Dd from nursery.
mine is three days in the office but my boss has given me the go ahead to put in a flexible working request to drop this down to two. We can also manage our own hours as long as we do not decline meetings for frivolous reasons eg gym.
a few of the older men in management like to occasionally grumble but are quickly shot back down .

Yellowwellies1 · 19/01/2024 08:52

I started a new job last summer and was told the expectation was 3 days a week in the office. Quickly realised that wasn't being enforced. I aim for 2 days a week, sometimes 1, depending on meetings etc. One day a week would be my preference, but I do feel a bit of pressure from my manager to go in 2 days.

Allthegoodusernamesareused · 19/01/2024 08:57

7 days a week/365 day a year shift pattern - we work roughly two thirds in the office, and the rest from home. We don't get to choose, the whole team is either in the office or at home.

Mmmmdanone · 19/01/2024 09:04

Half time in office on a rota

ememem84 · 19/01/2024 09:15

as another poster said I am lucky enough to request what i want. my employer is very flexible and takes the stance of as long as the work gets done and we know whether you're coming in or not its ok.

I work reduced hours. so do full days mon-weds in the office, until 2 on a thursday in the office and then all day friday from home. this can be juggled around if necessary (for both me and th business). i also have a later start (school drop off - hence why i'm on MN now...)

Oblomov23 · 19/01/2024 09:16

This thread shows wide variety, and worse still some archaic views by leadership.

headcheffer · 19/01/2024 09:20

I'm supposed to do two days in the office, I don't and neither does anyone from my team.

TheSandHurtsMyFeelings · 19/01/2024 09:21

BigFatCat2024 · 19/01/2024 07:18

In the office when you want/need to be, at home the rest of the time

Same here. I am on my way in today because there's a meeting on Fridays I prefer to do in person, but aside from that I only really go in if it's unavoidable 😁

Charlie2121 · 19/01/2024 09:36

I changed my contract to full time WFH. I might go into the office once every couple of months if there’s reason to do so.

It varies role by role but in most cases provided there is no impact on performance then people are allowed to work from wherever they want.

I often extend holidays abroad and work part of it. places like Barbados works well. By the time my DC is asleep there it is only early afternoon UK time so I can easily get at least half a days work done. It means I can have perhaps a month away but only use maybe 2 weeks annual leave.

itsgoingtobeabumpyride · 19/01/2024 10:26

Three days at any company site so that could be actually out on site, Network Rail.
Two days wfh.
Some come in more but the options there, it's great tbh

canttellyouwhereorwhatido · 19/01/2024 12:07

I'm meant to be in the office minimum of 2 days a week but haven't set foot in the place since 2017. Started wfh prior to Covid as a pointless shlep into the office to simply sit in front of the same laptop I have at home. So just started not going in. Boss never complained so I just continued...

.. and have ignored all corporate comms about returning.. no one has ever said anything . I am guessing they think I have a special contract !

Bellavida99 · 19/01/2024 12:13

our team do 1 day a month in the office but this is voluntary. It’s well attended though and most people opt to attend on that day. I also do 1 or 2 site visits or external meetings a month but mostly still WFH

TheBeesKnee · 19/01/2024 12:18

Average 2 days in the office per week. So in theory you could do 4 days one week and zero the next.

There's talk about increasing this to 3 days at some point.

duckpancakes · 19/01/2024 18:07

Babyenroute · 19/01/2024 07:35

60% in the office and completely enforced - there is a tracking system which management check to see people's stats and who has been in more. Senior management need to be in 5 days (I'm assuming to set the tone from the top as they eventually want as all in 5 days 😕)

Yeah our senior management are cracking down

My friend says her place are withholding bonus from anyone who doesn't come in the required amount this year :(

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 19/01/2024 18:11

I'm supposed to go on once a week for the day.

I generally go in once a fortnight and leave at about lunchtime.

I hate going into the office.

DontKaleMyVibe · 19/01/2024 18:12

We work from home unless we want or need to go into the office. I can go weeks at a time without going in. Pretty much all our friends and family are the same. I know the odd person working somewhere where they're expected to be in the office once a week.

campingmama · 19/01/2024 18:22

We aim for 1 day a fortnight... think I last went in mid-November
We reduced the desk numbers so no guarantee of a desk in our 'area' so pointless to go in and sit at a hot desk on another floor when the point of being in is collaboration!

Yes same as my employer. 60% in over 4 weeks or you will go on performance management and bonuses not paid.

Twilightstarbright · 19/01/2024 21:29

Financial services company. Company ‘strongly encourage’ two days a week in, but it’s up to the Exec, some enforce it more than others. My team generally do 2-3 days a week in the office but sometimes I do less around school holidays.

In general we are treated like adults and trusted to do what is needed.

jay55 · 19/01/2024 21:36

2 days in the office but not enforced at all.

This week I didn't go in at all. Next week I'll do the two days.
Some people have only been in once or twice since I started in October.

Sofabum · 19/01/2024 21:40

No enforced time in the office but I do 2 days 9-5ish and then the three days I wfh are 5am-7-am, 9am-3pm, 7pm-11pm

OhpoorMe · 19/01/2024 21:57

We can do whatever we want - no minimum office days, no core hours, no pattern needed. Some people come in once a month, some 4 days a week, some every day for one week a month. Public sector with great offices which helps the draw

coxesorangepippin · 19/01/2024 21:59

We're hybrid

99% of the time at home

There will be people who will forgo a bonus in favour of not burning up fossil fuel / paying for an expensive commute by train / personal wear and tear.

When you consider that a bonus of say £3,000 is taxed at basic or higher rate ends up being say £2,000 and then calculate the annualised cost of attendance in the office (petrol, car maintenance, childcare arrangements) it ends up being a very marginal benefit that really isn't worth it. Having the extra time back is a perk!
