Do you get a Christmas present from work?

Just wondering really. I started a new job 6 months ago and have always received Christmas gifts from work (normally just a card, cheap bottle of wine and/or Xmas flowers). This year in this job I don’t think that’s happening. I work in a small team and we’re only all in the office one day a week (not necessarily the same day). Yesterday coincidentally we were all in the office together and the other team in our office were also there and received gifts from their manager (we are all one big team as our work helps each other but we have different roles and so different managers) and we did not. I was just wondering what the norm is really as I kind of expected it but don’t want to be unreasonable.
Before anyone says there’s still time that’s true! I just doubt we will all be in the office together next week as it rarely happens

Not myself, but my partner gets a nice boxed bottle of bottega Prosecco, and a tub of heroes each Christmas from his employer

CharlotteStreetW1 · 14/12/2023 21:25

I used to work for a guy whose wife bought me some really beautiful gifts. My boss in this job (fifth Christmas there) started high (Chanel perfume, good champagne etc) but nothing last year and probably not this.

Some bosses buy their secretaries gifts, others not.

We normally get a generous John Lewis voucher from the company but they've slashed bonuses this year so who knows?

I've worked particularly hard this year so I'm feeling a bit under-appreciated at the moment.

Sulk.

No, never. And no bonuses either. No Christmas meal or drinks or party. Private sector global company.

I manage a team of 15 staff, I bought all of my staff a small gift each however as I work for public sector funded this myself . It can prove quite costly tbh and I barely earn more than those I manage.
Other teams in my organisation haven't had presents, some have.
I haven't received a gift from my manager and dont expect it.
Doesn't bother me.
I think it's up to individual managers really.

I've been er known gifts to be funded in private sector either.
I know my manager buys presents out of her own money and I buy my admin girl birthday and Christmas gifts from my own money

BigBoysDontCry · 14/12/2023 21:28

Generally we all chip in for a gift for our boss and he would buy us all a bottle/some beers.

This year he's left, we have no new manager so it will be nothing.

Nothing directly from the company though. No bonus, not even a sweet.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 14/12/2023 21:28

I’m retired and never received a present from company or manager although have had a lot of bonuses at Christmas or year end.

Run4it2 · 14/12/2023 21:30

Senior management chip in and buy us all a bottle. I buy my team a selection box and a Christmas ornament - public sector, so I pay for this.

NewbieTwentyFour · 14/12/2023 21:31

We get a £150 voucher every year (usually the kind that can be traded in for different retailers - I picked John Lewis this time).

And it’s tradition for managers to hand out advent calendars to their teams.

No Christmas bonus - we get ours in April.

RabbitsRock · 14/12/2023 21:31

Not a sausage! We don’t get bonuses ever. The store doesn’t even pay for a Christmas meal. We used to get £5 to spend in the cafe every so often but I never bothered because after my shift, I just wanted to get home.

Mathsstatsmaths · 14/12/2023 21:31

I’m a boss not an employee with our own small business. We give each employee (about 15 at present) a cash gift of £50-100 each Christmas. Comes from our pockets so they aren’t taxed on it. Sadly we don’t get a bonus!

Doggymummar · 14/12/2023 21:32

Apparently we are getting 250 which is lovely. Previously have had hampers, laptops etc from a big financial company and nothing at all from others,p.

ListenLinda · 14/12/2023 21:57

Last year we got a choice of gift, a hamper or alcohol. This year, nothing.

DH got a £50 love2shop voucher from his work this morning.

RoseMartha · 14/12/2023 22:14

The company has changed hands this year, so I have no clue as to what will happen.

Prior to this we didnt get a gift. I think I have received a card from my boss who was also the MD , once in 9 years.

snowgal · 14/12/2023 22:21

One company I worked with provided everyone with all the ingredients for a Christmas dinner- that was awesome!

brawhen · 14/12/2023 22:21

DH & I run a small business. Our 6 staff are each getting £500 (officially in pay, so taxed), a nice bottle of champagne and a large box of fancy-wrapped chocolates. I figure they can use them as nice re-gifts if they want to!

We didn't have a Christmas lunch or anything.

I do it because I want to show our appreciation, hopefully give them a smile, and retain them for another year!

MadeOfAllWork · 14/12/2023 22:21

Nope.

I did used to work for a company that did nothing for Christmas but did give everyone an Easter egg at Easter.

No.

i have always been expected to contribute towards a cash gift for the team’s administrative assistant. It was a bit surprising my very first year out of university when I was struggling to make rent, but I was technically her boss. No one else has ever gotten a gift at any job.

CyberCritical · 14/12/2023 22:30

No but I buy gifts for my team with my own money.

Frasers · 14/12/2023 22:31

No never.

champagneproblems13 · 14/12/2023 22:52

I work in a large retail firm and each employee gets £10 in a card with a 'thank you' written by the boss 💀

PegasusReturns · 14/12/2023 23:10

No gifts although we do have a nice Christmas lunch with an open bar at a second venue.

I buy my direct reports gifts out of my own pocket.

WhatFlavourIsIt · 14/12/2023 23:19

I gave my employees £200 cash and a bottle of wine. They gave me wine & a voucher for a local restaurant. I would have given more if I could . I love them all & I'm so lucky to have such a great bunch of women to rely on.

wideawakeinthemiddleofthenightagain · 14/12/2023 23:40

For the first 15 years of my career, we always got a gift from the company and usually the manager you worked for gave you something. In turn, you bought for the secretaries and anyone you managed.
Where I am now we get absolutely nothing. I have to say I find it a bit odd. I still buy for my PA and will be giving a few colleagues a gift. Some of these are mutual gifts; others I will be giving as a thank you for doing something which is above & beyond; likewise, I have received a couple of gifts from people where I have really helped them out.

UsingChangeofName · 14/12/2023 23:40

From work ? No, never. Although I only started work in my first job 42 years ago, so maybe in my next job ??

A little, very token type thing from Manager's own pocket ? Occasionally. Not expected though.
