I don’t want to be a solicitor anymore

I’m wondering if anyone can help please.

I’ve fallen out of love with my job. I’ve waited to see if it blows over and tried to change my mindset it but the targets and the pressure I just don’t want it anymore. I’m a private client solicitor and my home life is stressful and challenging.

it’s not an area where I can move in house, or into government or something. I’m full time because I can’t afford not to be. Lone parent to 3 children all primary age.

has anyone else quit this area of law and if so would you mind sharing what you do now? I’m just feeling really stuck on another Monday morning.

This is quite a common question lately - previous thread which contains link to another thread (which itself mentions another thread):

They're not identical circumstances but might still give you ideas or at least some solidarity!

I'm currently a public sector in-house solicitor and really hate my job. I'm overworked and underpaid with very little work/life balance. I...

I was also a private client solicitor, and moved successfully into the Government Legal Department. There are a lot of transferable skills between private client and advisory / drafting work. Starting with helping clients work out what the problem is, how to solve problems, identifying and asking the right questions and putting individual acts in context. But in the public sector you do that as it's interesting, and not because you fear the SRA if you don't cover absolutely everything.

I used to be a property solicitor. Now I work for a large University coaching apprentice solicitors, which is about 99% WFH (although I could go onto campus every day if I wanted).

It's not teaching, it's more like mentoring. I do things like give them advice on time management, work life balance etc. and help them set goals for development. It's a really laid back job, I'm in charge of my own time and it's really lovely watching them grow over time. Completely different to the pressures of being in practice! I'd really recommend it.

Along a similar line there are often jobs I see posted for SQE subject tutors if that might be of interest?

One of DH'S friends went into probate. A lot less pressure than local government child disputes.

Hi

I have been looking for inspiration as I'm also not enjoying the chosen path of private client solicitor , and have come across this thread.

Did you manage to find an alternative route/career?
