New Career - Solicitor

I'm currently a public sector in-house solicitor and really hate my job. I'm overworked and underpaid with very little work/life balance. I don't enjoy going to court and don't like the office politics. I'd love to do something that offers some flexibility around the school holidays as I have 2 young children. My income will always be subordinate to my husbands as he is the main earner in our household therefore I am not necessarily looking for another corporate role. I'm willing to retrain provided it's something that doesn't require a £40k investment in uni fees! What would you suggest? Thankful for any advice.

There was a brief thread recently that might have a few ideas:

Thank you! I will have a read of it.

You say you're public sector in house but I'm not sure what that means exactly - have you considered an alternative civil service role (whether in a legal field or not)? I'm an ex solicitor, now in the civil service and much happier.

I work in a Local Government legal department. What type of civil service role do you work in now? Thank you for taking the time to respond to my thread.

I am a tax professional at HMRC - I retrained by doing the graduate scheme, but it isn't necessary to do that to move into a civil service role. I don't know how local govt works but I'm assuming you don't have access to internal civil service roles on the civil service jobs site? There are way more opportunities once you're 'in'.
