What job can a stupid, unqualified person do?

Unremarkableloser · 03/11/2023 17:11

Ideally for a little more minimum wage?
Obviously I’m not expecting a high rate of pay as I’m not qualified in anything, and I’m not very bright or interesting. I do try and be conscientious but that’s about all I’ve got going for me.
Im 40 as well so I will be out of place in places that have younger people who are perhaps doing their a-levels.

Any ideas? I’ll take basically anything.

Prime minister?

what are you interested in? That’s a good place to start.

Lochness1975 · 05/11/2023 16:09

What are your interests? Do you enjoy. Working with people? Those who are disadvantaged? Enjoy cleaning and are good at it? Enjoy IT systems? Etc

coldcallerbaiter · 05/11/2023 16:15

Courier, cleaner? You are not stupid, these are jobs that need doing, we need you!

viques · 05/11/2023 16:25

Start thinking about the things you enjoy doing. Do you like gardening, growing things, cooking or baking, dogs, children, old people, do you like helping people and talking to them or putting your head down and getting on with your work. Do you prefer being outside or being inside, being active or being sedentary. Once you have identified what you enjoy then start thinking about the places where you could work where you could do those things.

For many employers interest and enthusiasm counts as much as qualifications.

Wrongsideofpennines · 05/11/2023 16:26

In terms of getting experience I overheard a conversation amongst the volunteers in a charity shop recently. There was a bloke there being congratulated on getting a job in a shop, he was saying how over the last 6 months he learnt all these skills there that helped him get it. Apparently he'd spent the previous year sitting in his room in the dark gaming. His colleague listed all these things he could now do whereas before he'd literally just sat there at s screen.

So if you're really struggling to find a paid job maybe try volunteer roles to get some experience and a reference behind you.

geetsyt · 05/11/2023 18:18

Ah OP come on, the best thing you can do first is work on your self esteem, you wrote a well worded opening post I can see you are self-analytical (to a fault admittedly!), hold a good vocabulary and can write well, so I am certain you have a lot to offer to an employer, but they will only know that when you do.

Stripestars · 14/11/2023 07:46

Try warehouse work like you mentioned or production operator jobs. Plenty people get started with no experience or decent language skills. They are mostly through agencies so you might always be guaranteed a shift, but I know lots of people doing these jobs. Be prepared for long hours on your feet all day.

Hopefulatlunchtime · 14/11/2023 07:48

NeverDropYourMooncup · 03/11/2023 17:17

If you've got the ability to lie straight in the face of others and have zero emotional intelligence, you could go far as a politician.

It’s a shame OP has just missed out on the Home Secretary job that was going.

Aposterhasnoname · 14/11/2023 07:51

Warehouse or factory work. Everywhere is crying out for staff, and there’s often plenty of opportunity to progress.

Hopefulatlunchtime · 14/11/2023 08:12

Your local council is like to offer, or refer you to, local employment support schemes. Some of these can be very good and offer mentors, pay to put you through vocational qualifications ( up to a certain level), and some even pay for equipment etc needed to start you up in work, especially if you are moving to a self-employed role. They will also help you to get voluntary experience to help you into work.

They change these schemes all the time, so even if they don’t have one suitable for you now, they might in the near future. Some are for people in work but looking for a better job/to move jobs.

Gardeningtime · 14/11/2023 08:15

Op, are you ok? The way you’re attacking yourself is horrible, stupid, ugly, not personable, etc, is there something or someone in your life that’s made you attack yourself like this, or mental health issues, depression, low self esteem etc?

Hopefulatlunchtime · 14/11/2023 08:15

Re. Warehouse. I know someone who worked for Amazon and got a decent Golden Hullo.

Catandsquirrel · 14/11/2023 08:24

Hi Suella!

Seriously OP, you sound very lacking in self esteem, is there a reason for this that we could advise you on?

Do you have any previous employment experience or anything you'd be interested I'm trying?

Can you drive?

NHS care is good if it would suit, potential to go for your nurse training if you enjoyed it. Bank hours pay well if you can do any nights or weekends. Can take a while to get recruited though.

A lot of seasonal recruitment happening- royal mail, retail, supermarket deliveries. You could go for supervisor roles if you've any experience.

Civil service- once you're in you can move up and gain experience.

Missingthegore · 14/11/2023 08:29

Your not stupid but your self esteem is very low. I'm sorry for whatever caused that.
Your post is very articulate.

Things not suggested already (I don't think)
Prison officer
Bus driver (the risk of severe PTSD with driving a train is too much for me)
Taxi
Working for the company that does the sanitation bins in women's toilets
Switchboard operator in a hospital
999 call taker
Dishwasher in a hotel
Housekeeper in a hotel
Factory work like making sandwiches
Working in a bakery
RSPCA warden

Volunteer to visit the elderly with a charity to get something on your CV?

All amazing jobs, a few I have done while at uni.
One of the jobs I wanted as a kid was a florist....if only I was creative and not allergic to flowers 😀

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 14/11/2023 08:29

You are not stupid, OP. That much is clear from your writing style.

You do seem very down on yourself though. Have you considered counselling?

Towerofsong · 14/11/2023 08:32

Hotcuppatea · 03/11/2023 17:18

I bet you arent stupid at all. Have you thought about retraining? Or maybe doing something like joining Border Force or some other kind of operational frontline organisation.

Immigration officer?

Operational support grade in a prison?

Both pay over £25k

Spacemoon · 14/11/2023 08:36

LoreleiG · 03/11/2023 17:17

Driver? There is a shortage.

What kind of driver exactly? Because Hgv drivers are skilled and trained, not just anyone can jump in a cab, hook up to the trailer and off they pop. It also often involves a lot of geographical knowledge, route planning, quick thinking and often customer service skills too.

Or did you mean another kind of driver?

Whatnowfgs · 14/11/2023 09:27

Places like fruit and veg shops are a good start. Not many want to work early morning and in al weathers. Once you have a bit of retail experience you can move on to something with better hours.

Civil Servant!!!! Come on down.

You need to get through a very difficult application process though. Reams of questions and competency based stuff. I've no idea how local and central government bodies ever manage to hire anyone.

Jewelspun · 14/11/2023 10:15

For someone who is allegedly not bright you spelt conscientious!

You do realise that your self worth or rather lack of it is also how others will see you?

If you believe you are stupid and not very bright then you will give odd that impression and people will also believe it.

You won't have to strut around like a peacock but boosting your self esteem and how you see yourself will improve your chances tenfold.

Always aim high.

Theres a lot of support for entry level grades online, on MN for instance. STAR model etc. It's long winded but not exclusionary once people understand how it works which can all be researched.

I'm not going to be rude about anyone but people do get through the process who you might expect to struggle with the competencies etc. It's just understanding the format.

MrsSkylerWhite · 14/11/2023 10:48

You’re not stupid. You’re eloquent with good spelling and grammar.

Can you drive?

Agreed it’s batshit, but the recruitment process certainly isn’t based on skills or talent. It’s a complicated game and only judged on how well you play the game rather than being good at anything.

larkstar · 14/11/2023 10:53

Judging by fly on the wall police investigation programs on TV I'd suggest the police force.
