What job can a stupid, unqualified person do?

Unremarkableloser · 03/11/2023 17:11

Ideally for a little more minimum wage?
Obviously I’m not expecting a high rate of pay as I’m not qualified in anything, and I’m not very bright or interesting. I do try and be conscientious but that’s about all I’ve got going for me.
Im 40 as well so I will be out of place in places that have younger people who are perhaps doing their a-levels.

Any ideas? I’ll take basically anything.

Stop this labelling of yourself!
You can clearly read and write, so not "stupid'
What do you like ?
What have you tried?
Have you been to your local job centre and asked? Have you gotten cv advice ?

Echobelly · 03/11/2023 17:55

NB, you can write a post that's more articulate and correctly spelled than many people OP, so you are clearly not stupid.

Ibizabar · 03/11/2023 18:02

I don't think shop assistants, care workers, catering staff and other jobs listed are all done by stupid and unqualified people. So it's a bit insulting to list those jobs.

C1N1C · 03/11/2023 18:05

Work at my company... plenty of thick managers

They’re definitely not done by stupid people, but I don’t think you need qualifications for them.

I agree that saying they’re for stupid people is really rude and not true.

OP doesn’t sound stupid either, so these are potential jobs she could look into.

AdaColeman · 03/11/2023 18:09

Prime Minister springs to mind!

JustAMinutePleass · 03/11/2023 18:09

Can you drive? If so you could try Uber. It’s not for stupid people but it will give you the confidence you need to get out there.

We (collectively) don't believe that the OP is stupid, and so she would be very capable of doing any of these jobs at a low level and gaining qualifications as she goes if necessary.

'Stupid' is the sort of word that people use to put someone down, and that person may internalise it and believe it to be true. It almost never is true, it's just a control/abuse thing.

ReturnfromtheStars · 03/11/2023 18:27

I also came on to say, you may be unqualified, but I'm sure you're not stupid. Even your first and so far only post shows good English :)

Cotswoldbee · 03/11/2023 18:30

If you don't mind being on your feet then warehouse work is plentiful.
It's not all heavy lifting (far from it in fact) and pay is generally higher than the Living Wage as most warehouses are crying out for staff (many pay a bonus if you meet attendance requirements).
OH had a go when he retired and was surprised that the M/F split was about 50/50, he just gave it up as he didn't want to do a full 40hr week.

He also tried shop work (one of the Big4) but the pay was less than a warehouse and dealing with the public was not something he enjoyed. Once again, they are desperate for staff as retention seems to be an issue, some people stay for years but others stay just a few weeks/months.

He found that getting a job in these fields was not the difficult bit, it was just finding something he wanted to do.
Now he is just settling into retirement. 😴

Surely2023IsTheYearForMyRainbowBaby · 03/11/2023 18:31

Retail or caring. I'm thick as shite and have managed to do both. Although I couldn't manage retail if it meant working out change in my head!

ReturnfromtheStars · 03/11/2023 18:35

@Surely2023IsTheYearForMyRainbowBaby I'm sure you're not thick either! Both care and retail work requires a lot of emotional intelligence for one thing. Math is not the only valuable skill.

Health care assistants in hospital don't get paid much for daytime rates, but overtime rates for evening/weekends are very good. If you are not fazed by care work which is not for everyone.

NHS has good career pathways for people to move from HCA and support worker positions through to nursing if they enjoy the work and it suits them.

Thank you for all your suggestions!
I don’t think people who work in shops etc are stupid - but sometimes you can apply without a massive wealth of experience. I look at other things and haven’t even got an understanding of what I’d need. And how can I get experience if I need experience to get the job?
I am pretty stupid tbh, there are more ways of being stupid than just academically. I make bad decisions and I’m not very capable. I’m like a kid. Sometimes I wonder if there’s something underlying but then I think I’m just looking for an excuse as to why I’ve done so badly in life and failed so miserably, despite having a reasonable upbringing and opportunities.
I’m also ugly and not very personable which I don’t think helps me either.

I would consider Warehouse work - I’ve just had a quick look and it doesn’t look like they need experience or academic qualifications and some pay £11/12 an hour or more if it’s overnight or Sunday.
Thank you!

I work nights in a supermarket, the work isn't exactly thrilling, but it's lovely to walk out and not have anything hanging over you. The company benefits are pretty decent too. I didn't have any related experience (previously all admin/call centres), started as a Christmas temp. I'm 46 and they take all people from all ages and experience etc.

Voteva · 03/11/2023 20:01

I don’t think you are stupid, I think someone has crushed your confidence for years - for it to go this deep it was probably a man (or perhaps your mum).

Here on Mumsnet you’re reaching out to others, doing researxh and replying politely. Stupid people don’t do that.

Perhaps your post should read more like “What jobs could I realistically get, applying at age 40 with no experience or qualifications?”

To which I say

if you can afford to invest some time, do volunteer work to get experience and build your CV. You could help an an animal refuge, at Citizens Advice, as a magistrate etc etc

If you need money asap, random thoughts

  • teaching assistant
  • assist at a kids after school club eg swim teacher, craft club
  • Shop checkout
  • train driver
  • Amazon has a billion jobs at all levels
  • parcel delivery / post lady
  • Window cleaner
  • APPRENTICESHIP to be plumber, electrician etc etc
  • police. In fact huge numbers of the police are neither bright nor beautiful
coxesorangepippin · 03/11/2023 20:02

Well, your written English is great for a start

If you can use MN, you can use most computer systems

coxesorangepippin · 03/11/2023 20:03

I'd temp in the meantime, and get on LinkedIn

BecauseTheWorld · 03/11/2023 20:04

Learn a trade. Decorating needs little in the way of qualifications but earns good money.

Hard working reaps more rewards than being clever.

WrongSwanson · 03/11/2023 20:07

You clearly write very articulately. That's a great skill on its own, and the key to most work.

What qualifications/experience do you have?

If you don't have many qualifications - look for an entry level job in an organisation and then try and make a good impression/work your way up?

Pinkpinkpink15 · 03/11/2023 20:11

AdaColeman · 03/11/2023 18:09

Prime Minister springs to mind!

@AdaColeman

Nah she's over qualified for that.

she also appears to have a personality!!

LIZS · 03/11/2023 20:17

How "unqualified"? On mn it can mean anything from little formal education and no gcses/level 2 to no post graduate / vocational qualification. If the former try your local further education college for free English and Maths, which can be taken alongside an apprenticeship. You don't come across as "stupid", who labelled you as such?

CherrySocks · 03/11/2023 20:29

"And how can I get experience if I need experience to get the job?"

Volunteer to get experience.

Snowdropcow · 03/11/2023 20:32

NHS admin roles that are band 3 or above.
