If I was desperate for money and physically capable why not?

OwlBabiesAreCute · 03/08/2023 13:37

What an absolute arse of a comment.

Twat.

megletthesecond · 03/08/2023 13:39

I'd love to see the customers tolerating late deliveries because over 50's aren't going to ride like lunatics.

Aplume · 03/08/2023 13:41

Anyone over 50 who needs to work already does so. We're not short of workers because a few people retire early. We're short of workers because we told all our young, fit, healthy and educated at the expense of another country EU workers to fuck off and now that we're a low wage economy with a high cost of living other people aren't rushing in from elsewhere to replace them.

As for this bifter, why doesn't he get a job biking around deliveroo orders if he's so bloody worried about it. Twat.

Neverseenbefore · 03/08/2023 13:41

I’m 57 and wouldn’t. I work full time as it is, and I can’t drive.

stealthninjamum · 03/08/2023 13:43

I feel a bit sorry for the guy. The article said he was asked if over 50 year olds could do these jobs that are normally done by younger people. If he’d said no he’d be accused of being ageist. I’m not sure there’s any way he could’ve answered without someone taking offence.

BeastOfBODMAS · 03/08/2023 13:44

I would if I needed extra money. Less physically demanding than some alternatives. You’d need your health, a vehicle and no caring responsibilities though so it’s not an easy answer for everyone.

He’s still a twat.

Illegallyblonder · 03/08/2023 13:49

I'm fed up of being insulted by twatty politicians.

I'm in my fifties and NFW would I deliver takeaways.

Fuck off and when you get there fuck off some fucking more you cunts. Every time someone in this government opens their mouths I want to punch them.

CointreauVersial · 03/08/2023 13:50

Well, DH found himself out of work back in March (age 55) and has been working for Sainsburys ever since, delivering online grocery orders so we can keep paying the mortgage.

Not quite the same as takeaways, and he definitely found it more physically demanding than someone 20 years younger, but you do what you need to do if money is short.

He now has a new job lined up, and will be quite happy to be behind a desk again.

MintJulia · 03/08/2023 13:51

Not takeaways, no because I won't want to work late evenings, but when I retire in a couple of years, I'll probably get a part time job. School minibus driver is one possibility.

But I'm 60 and working full time, flat out, career job, so I'm probably not who they are aiming at.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 03/08/2023 13:51

Well I COULD but I'm not going to.

Maybe I could have a crack at running the country. I can't be any worse at it that some of the dumbos currently doing it (not looking at anyone in particular here, Mr Stride).

vodkaredbullgirl · 03/08/2023 13:53

Already have a fulltime job, so no thanks.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 03/08/2023 13:55

I am actually thinking of returning to work, but I'm looking at a nice snug office, thanks all the same, Mel. Not tearing around on a bike in the rain. What I do pays more, for a start.

ClaudiaWankleman · 03/08/2023 13:56

Why is the idea of delivering takeaways an insult? It's honest work.

I imagine quite tough work if you're on a bike in all weathers, so not suited to all people (of any age to be honest), but it's not exactly a disreputable profession.

Indigotree · 03/08/2023 13:56

Difficult with the sleep deprivation, period flooding accidents, forgetfulness, exhaustion plus lack of anyone to look after the children after 5 or 6 pm that most of us in our 50s experience!

When I was 20 I found cycling terrifying and difficult physically , as a small person in heavy, fast traffic. I get asthma. And I can't afford driving lessons or a car.

So er no.

Ageist !

NeverDropYourMooncup · 03/08/2023 13:56

Prefer the fulltime, non physical, non driving, no need to risk my life on a moped, job that I'm already doing and will probably be doing until the day I drop dead, personally.

Indigotree · 03/08/2023 13:59

It's not a useful, fulfilling or rewarding career, though. It would definitely make life very unpleasant and difficult for most people undertaking it and would be likely to cause physical and mental health problems.
It's not like a decade or so ago when deliveries were done locally by members of small family businesses with an investment in the family business doing well and scope to vary activities shared between workers.

hattie43 · 03/08/2023 14:00

If I was desperate for money yes but I'm not so don't need to .

DreamItDoIt · 03/08/2023 14:01

They seem to be fixated on getting over 50s back, most of whom have worked their whole lives. Meanwhile the younger generation all have 'mental elf' so can't work or aren't expected to work. The over 50s will be much better at budgeting and cutting back than young people.

The whole system needs an overhaul. Employers need to pay more and affordable childcare needs to be setup. Having a child needs to stop being a barrier to work and a trip to the benefits office. Young able bodied individuals should be taking those jobs. I just don't believe we are full employment.

Willmafrockfit · 03/08/2023 14:05

no, not with the cost of petrol

actually we did some deliveries, of yellow pages, some years ago,
an awful lot of driving, for not much reward.
my relative took early retirement, he is 58.
he could do it, but i dont think he needs the money.

AgnesX · 03/08/2023 14:06

Thinking of all the delivery guys where I am, they are all young (and presumably fit) on electric bikes. It's changed from where it did used to be middle aged guys earning a few quid delivering take away.

I'll probably upset people here but it also seems to be immigrant work. Like taxi driving the waves of new nationalities can be seen as they move up the ladder.

LookingForFreeDoughnuts · 03/08/2023 14:06

I wonder if this is a signal that our state pension system is broken. Get the message out now, not to the actual over 50s, but the younger generation, that working double-time into so-called retirement age is normal... they won't expect a state pension then, they'll just get a second job cos that's what you do.

TheBloatedMiddle · 03/08/2023 14:07

If i had no other option perhaps.

But I just don't fancy being a lone woman turning up at randomers doorsteps at night.

margegunderson · 03/08/2023 14:07

My genitourinary syndrome of menopause means you won't catch me on a bloody bike but at least I've got NHS treatment for it unlike many women over 50 who are really struggling with meno and fobbed off by the NHS.
I'm also really fit and in a part time job which fits the rest of my
career. And I still wouldn't do deliveroo.
Perhaps other over 50s would be likelier to be working if the NHS was able to sort their meno symptoms and other age-related health problems?
