It's not a useful, fulfilling or rewarding career, though. It would definitely make life very unpleasant and difficult for most people undertaking it and would be likely to cause physical and mental health problems.
It's not like a decade or so ago when deliveries were done locally by members of small family businesses with an investment in the family business doing well and scope to vary activities shared between workers.

Why would delivering takeaways cause mental health problems. Don't get me wrong, I am educated to postgraduate level and a big part of my motivation in doing that was to give me choice and access to the type of jobs and salary that suit my preferences. It wouldn't be my choice. Having said that, if I needed to of course I would. Some of these posts are quite insulting to people who work hard to earn money that is needed to suppory their families. There is dignity in that and I respect anyone who works hard to provide.

DH at 60 and I at 58 are not in paid work currently, he retired last year, having financially planned for that and I lost my small business and two part time jobs due to COVID lockdowns. We claim no benefits so I feel it is nothing to do with the Government what we do with our time.

We moved to be nearer our adult children this year and between us we are covering several volunteer roles in the community. In the next couple of years if my DD has a baby I will probably spend a full day a week supporting her or as child care. Someone at my yoga class is enabling an elderly neighbour to remain in her own home as there is no social care package available, fellow volunteers are child care and pick school age grandchildren up and care for them after school. Not in paid work doesn’t mean that you are sat at home with your feet up. Who will fill all these roles and care needs if the volunteers are working many hours a week delivering takeaways?

Then you come to all the people who are not fit for work as they are unable to access medical treatment, I have developed a chronic pain condition since having COVID and voluntary work doesn’t put pressure on me to be present if I am unwell.

I can think of a few MP’s that would benefit from a few shifts delivering takeaways, especially Nadine Dorries who has done no work for many months whilst claiming a huge salary and expenses.

beguilingeyes · 03/08/2023 15:50

No, but it's more for safety concerns than anything else. I'd be too worried about being robbed/assaulted.

crazeekat · 03/08/2023 16:44

patronising bastard. like the rest of them.

EBearhug · 03/08/2023 19:02

I'm 51 and I was made redundant 6 months ago. Haven't decided what I want to do yet. I could do takeaway deliveries. Don't want to. I spend my evenings doing exercise classes and stuff. Still, redundancy money won't last forever, and I'm not counting it out completely. I think there's other stuff I'd be better at though.

User165753 · 03/08/2023 19:06

I wouldn't because I don't need to but my NDN did when he retired, not on a bike though, in his car, I think it was Domino's.

ladygindiva · 03/08/2023 20:10

Aplume · 03/08/2023 13:41

Anyone over 50 who needs to work already does so. We're not short of workers because a few people retire early. We're short of workers because we told all our young, fit, healthy and educated at the expense of another country EU workers to fuck off and now that we're a low wage economy with a high cost of living other people aren't rushing in from elsewhere to replace them.

As for this bifter, why doesn't he get a job biking around deliveroo orders if he's so bloody worried about it. Twat.

Spot on

gogomoto · 03/08/2023 20:28

Personally no, i have a job but if you need flexible work or additional work why not?

Oblomov23 · 03/08/2023 20:33

No. I'm all weathers, for a low wage, no thanks.

Dymaxion · 03/08/2023 21:58

That is a really good point about people who aren't working but who are caring for dependent relatives at both ends of the age spectrum, given that social care and the childcare sector is in crisis, does the Government really want all those people to give that up to deliver takeaways ?

IncompleteSenten · 03/08/2023 22:01

If I needed money, was unable to find other work and was physically capable then yes of course.

LadyWithLapdog · 03/08/2023 22:15

No. I’d need the loo between every pizza. I’m a nervous cycle rider at the best of times and I don’t want to add to planet pollution with my car and short-distance pointless deliveries. He can F right O and take the cabinet with him.

LadyWithLapdog · 03/08/2023 22:16

I hear Obly Fabs is an option too.

LadyWithLapdog · 03/08/2023 22:17

N
I don’t know what happened with my N keys above.

GrethaGoat · 03/08/2023 22:25

No. I am 51 and work as a senior manager in Banking. If I lost my job I would want another job I am qualified for, not delivering take always. Looks like he has eaten too many takeaways to think straight!

Aprilx · 04/08/2023 08:44

Illegallyblonder · 03/08/2023 13:49

I'm fed up of being insulted by twatty politicians.

I'm in my fifties and NFW would I deliver takeaways.

Fuck off and when you get there fuck off some fucking more you cunts. Every time someone in this government opens their mouths I want to punch them.

You need to read the article properly. He didn’t say over 50s should deliver takeaways, he was asked if an over 50 could do a job normally done by a younger person. What other answer is there other than yes of course.

JobMatch3000 · 04/08/2023 08:49

My colleague in her 60s is a delivery driver for a local Indian restaurant. She makes a lot of money in tips.

AnkleWidget · 04/08/2023 08:50

I would love to deliver for Waitrose as all their drivers are lovely!

Augustus40 · 04/08/2023 09:10

I wouldn't as driving raises the blood pressure for which I am on meds. Plus I have a weak bladder and visit the loo quite often. Besides which I have given up driving this year and sold the car! 59 here.

Hate driving anyway.

TheBloatedMiddle · 04/08/2023 09:39

After originally saying no, I am actually now thinking about it.

I have a job but every year I take on 6 weeks of evening work to pay for a better type of summer holiday.

Vicliz24 · 04/08/2023 09:42

OnGoldenPond · 03/08/2023 15:15

How about we let the over 50s carry on doing the jobs they have been doing throughout their careers up until the age of 49 and stop pushing them out of the workplace in favour of younger workers? Then there would be no issue to solve!

The vast majority of those in their 50s need to work to support themselves. Giving up work before state retirement age is a luxury only open to the affluent few.

This

Aposterhasnoname · 04/08/2023 09:45

Ghasts my flabber when people say they wouldn’t do certain jobs. If I needed money and was physically capable I’d do whatever was available.

cansu · 04/08/2023 09:49

Most people in this age bracket would struggle physically with this kind of job. These companies should not be lauded but criticised for not giving their workers fair terms and conditions. This kind of crap really annoys me. Maybe the government need to turn its attention to solving the mess they have created instead of telling people to do shit second jobs.

WannaBeRecluse · 04/08/2023 09:51

If I had the time and needed a job, sure. I don't think it would be so bad. Just let me have a good audio book in the car.

I think you’re missing the fact you need to move crates around/parcels etc… which are often not light.
Thats for delivery drivers.

The take away delivery guys are often on bikes though….
