When I was applying for a CS job I have selected part time & flexi working option. But yesterday I have received a call from the employer offering me s full time job without hybrid working. Is this normal? I can’t commit to s full time hours with 2 preschool kids and full time working husband. Please any advice greatly appreciate 🙏

Did you tell the person you were speaking with you were looking for p/t?

In my experience with CS, you need to accept the role and go through the checks before they will discuss p/t hours. It's the opposite of any other companies, where generally you will agree working patterns, then accept.

Individewl · 22/06/2023 10:49

If they have advertised as part time then they will accommodate it. The same happened to me with a CS job. They said it was full time only on job offer. I said they had advertised it as offering part time so should honour that. I refused to withdraw my application as they suggested.

I was offered the position and worked part time hours and flexible working hours so I could do the school run.

You may need to to the training for the position full time so be mindful of that. I did 6 weeks full time training before dropping down to part time.

Good Luck, CS is a great place to work, really flexible and lots of opportunities for career progression.

I've recently been offered a CS role, in the job description it stated it was full time but also part time, job share available. I was told when offered the job in the phone with the recruiter it was full time and I said I couldn't do full time and then I told them what hours I wanted to do .

No problem on their side.

I was told all jobs are full time hours but can be reduced, so in the future if I want to increase my hours I should be able to .

Tharu0044 · 22/06/2023 12:52

I have accepted my provisional offer & completed security checks.

Thank you for your reply. I have emailed them regarding my availability, but worried they might reject it😞

That’s very helpful, I don’t mind attending training full time, hopefully they will accept my part time hours 🤞

As long as the role was advertised as p/t, flexible they shouldn't reject it. There may be a bit of negotiation around exact hours though.

ImSidneyFuckingPrescott · 22/06/2023 12:58

If there is full time training, get in writing exactly how long it will be. I've heard a few stories about people joining only to find out training is much longer than expected.

Congrats on your new role.

Individewl · 22/06/2023 13:01

There will be some negotiating. I was asked what was the most hours I could do in a week, I initially did 6 weeks full time training, then dropped down to 21 hours then dropped down to 18 hours after 12 months. I’m now looking to up my hours again in a higher grade. Its never been any problem, super flexible.

Ilikewinter · 22/06/2023 14:45

I agree, I wanted full time and after all the checks had been done my manager asked what hours I wanted!. Seems a totally back to front way of doing things but thats the CS for you 😂🤪

Got the answer to working 3 days is NO, what shall I do, shall I fight for my rights???

OP posts:
jfshu · 23/06/2023 10:23

You have got "rights" OP perse, it's down to business need (although it's hugely frustrating when they list flexibility but it turns out to not be very flexible) what did they say with the no?

jfshu · 23/06/2023 10:23

*havent

flipent · 23/06/2023 10:25

I'm not sure why you accepted a full time role when you needed part time.
I would have clarified at that point that it was a p/t role which was advertised and that you applied for.
If p/t was no longer an option, then you withdraw.

jfshu · 23/06/2023 10:26

Generally speaking it's easier to get in, pass probation and then apply for flexible working. What is it you would struggle with in terms of full time working exactly? Might be worth getting in as you've done the hard part, then try and drop hours down the line or move to a job that enables more flexibility.

jfshu · 23/06/2023 10:26

(Within the civil service)

ImSidneyFuckingPrescott · 23/06/2023 10:28

Was it a flat out no or did they offer a suggestion?

You need to work out what you want v what you could do (For example you may prefer 25 hours over 5 days but you could accommodate 30 hours over 5 days) and negotiate based on that.

Ilikewinter · 23/06/2023 11:08

Oh wow, Im quite surprised at that OP. What department have you applied for, is it an operational role for example where shift work would be required?. Given that they advertised part time & flexi it seems strange that they are now saying it full time only. Did they say flat out its full time or offer alternative hours?

Tharu0044 · 23/06/2023 11:36

I have not accepted the role yet, since the mistake happened from their end i don’t want to withdraw it either

OP posts:
Tharu0044 · 23/06/2023 11:37

No suggestions at all, very irritating 😠

OP posts:
flipent · 23/06/2023 11:37

What have they told you?
Why do you believe it is a mistake?
I'm not sure what advice / suggestions you're expecting when you're not answering the clarifying questions which are being asked.

Marteenie · 23/06/2023 11:40

Tharu0044 · 23/06/2023 10:19

Got the answer to working 3 days is NO, what shall I do, shall I fight for my rights???

What imagined rights do you believe you have? Until you recieve the final job offer following all checks etc either side (you or them) can back out. In this case the job role they can offer is full time, it's up to you whether you accept or not- you can try to negotiate but depending on the role it will depend whether they can find a job share to make up the hours needed for the post.

NoIncomeTaxNoVAT · 23/06/2023 11:46

What did the actual job ad say about working arrangements, OP? Not the bit on the online system.

Tharu0044 · 23/06/2023 11:47

Just for part time & no suggestions from their side at all,

Not sure if you've resolved this yet but I worked in recruitment in the civil service.

Jobs have to be advertised with PT and FW options to be inclusive, unless extremely strong justification can be provided. Recruiting line managers however can make up their own rules on why your working pattern doesn't meet the business needs if they want to. It's so frustrating! I would email back and ask what part time/flexible working options they can work towards, in line with the adverts specifying this is an option. Although, from experience, these people can be known to make things difficult once you're in post ... Do you want to work for someone who can work with you to agree a working pattern already?
