Civil service 1500 bonus

Confused5678 · 04/06/2023 12:42

Hello , I work full time as a civil servant and the 1500 bonus is apparently due for those in post on 31st march . To get the bonus you must be employed when the payment will be made . I was on maternity leave on 31st march . Anyone know if I would likely get the bonus?

OP posts:

Yes, I'm in the same boat and have just had mine

youveturnedupwelldone · 04/06/2023 13:06

Yes - mat leave is still counted as employed.

MakesMeFeelSad · 04/06/2023 13:15

I've not heard anything about it!

You’ve had your bonus? They’ve only just been announced I don't think we’ll be seeing anything til September

fomnt · 04/06/2023 13:24

@MakesMeFeelSad I only caught it as I was clocking off Friday, and email was sent round, I'm still not certain if it's guaranteed or something being negotiated with unions to try to stop strikes?

OP yes ML is continuous employment.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 04/06/2023 13:25

Yes, they can't discriminate against you because you're on mat leave, so I would expect you to get the bonus like any other employee.

youveturnedupwelldone · 04/06/2023 13:43

Basically the Cabinet Office have offered it as part of a deal to break strikes. It said departments are allowed to pay this out of their own budgets on top of the already agreed pay remit. It's not extra money being given on top of departmental budgets.

My dept has already said they will be paying it in the autumn, our budget is really stretched tho so genuinely I don't know where they will find the extra £5mil. Ironically it will almost certainly mean an even deeper recruitment freeze, increasing the pressure on the rest of us even more. Can't win really 🤷🏽‍♀️

I'd love to know how you've managed that, it's only just been announced.

Ahh right, I don't work Fridays so might hear something next week.

Ilikewinter · 04/06/2023 13:52

I didnt think it was a signed deal yet...thought it was offered as a sweetner to the unions to stop the strikes. However, I would gladly accept the payment 🤞😊

An email from Simon Case came out late on Friday. I didn't delve into it in detail so not sure if it applies to all grades or just some.

The report I saw in civil service news was payment to all grade 6 and below

daisychain01 · 04/06/2023 14:07

Our email states all grades below SCS (Senior Civil Servant) which seems fair as it's to help with the CoL and to make up for the fact pay increases have been impoverished for many years

Porkandbeans1 · 04/06/2023 14:22

I'm not sure about the civil service but if it's the same as the NHS lump sum then yes for maternity. Those on the sick should get it but it was up to individual trusts. Bank staff won't get a penny, it's fully based on contracted hours.

And nothing for those in the private sector as usual. The ones who create the wealth!

Private sector employers give out bonuses all the time?

fomnt · 04/06/2023 14:53

@Winterday1991 raise that with your employer? Or get yourself on Civil Service Jobs if you're so put out, hundreds of jobs on there.

Plenty of jobs in the public sector if you fancy it? Don't worry though this sweetner payment is a lot cheaper than raising wages in line with inflation (which they won't do).

Create the wealth my arse.

The private sector is also responsible for vast sums of loan, credit card, overdraft, mortgage and other unsecured debts that pulverise people in the long term.

At least the CS, for all its faults, has a system to pay benefits for those that need it, passports, the NHS, police, tax collection, DVLA - list is extensive.

The private sector, by design, default or whatever, does none of those things.

Take it up with your dogshit employer if you havent had a bonus. Cry us a river.

Its also NOT a "bonus" for CS staff - its one off taxable payment:

But yeh, dont let facts fill your head....🤦‍♂️🙄

Steps forward made on pay following constructive discussions with unions

Civil Service staff are in line to receive a one-off payment of £1,500 this year, following constructive discussions between the Cabinet Office and unions today.

I groaned when I read @Confused5678 post because I just KNEW someone would make a comment like this- more than likely will be picked up by the press!

As a civil servant I can assure you that unlike the private sector, we don’t routinely receive bonuses.

Ha ha - private sector employees get regular bonuses and are better paid. Plus I know loads of people in the private sector who were paid furlough over covid whilst we all worked- guess how that us being paid for?!
I'm public sector, but local authority, not civil service so won't get this (or probably any bonus ever) but I don't begrudge the civil service.

Dry your eyes, or come and join us.

MakesMeFeelSad · 05/06/2023 17:30

We had an email about it this afternoon, I'm assuming I'll lose all or most of it due to Uc though

CatyJ · 06/06/2023 14:06

No civil servant bonuses are offered in Wales. Once again our Senydd show contempt for those who do all the work behind the scenes and take all the flak when their stupid policies go wrong.

Shwighty1 · 07/06/2023 06:19

I hadn’t clicked that it was out of their own budgets. What happened to the drive to cut millions then? The agency I’m in have said they will pay it but not stated when yet, I hope it’s before September as I was considering leaving then

AlwaysPlayingYellowCar · 07/06/2023 06:55

My union said it will be pro-rata’d for part time staff. Although Simon Case’s email really made it sound like it’s £1.5k for everyone.
