Think I'm about to be sacked, help?

Clarebear81 · 29/04/2023 05:15

So I'm in a bit of a negative tail spin at the moment, everything just seems to be going wrong, got notice this week our landlord is selling so we need a new house, my car broke down and needs a new part costing £1000, and to top it off I think I'm going to get sacked.

I only started in this job a month ago after being made redundant from a job I'd been in almost 10 years. It was in a similar sector but totally different, I thought some of my skills may have been transferable but it seems not, I had to be retrained and am still retraining, I'll be honest it is a bit difficult, it's all totally new to me, new way of doing everything.

Anyway we were working on a project got it done only for the complaints to begin. There are 3 of us in a team, the boss came over to me yesterday singled me out and asked about this job in a totally patronising way, it seems how we did it was totally wrong, me I was just following instructions but I didn't sink anyone but it seems I'm going to made the fall guy. There is to be a meeting Monday morning, it's 5am Saturday morning and I'm crapping myself.

I'd like to say I enjoyed working here but it's a very odd unfriendly company, no one talks about anything other than work, people take lunch in their cars to avoid chit chat in canteen

So I'm unsure what to do, I've never been sacked before but I have seen 2 people get sacked in this company in the 1 month I've been here. It's the last thing I need at the moment with trying to find somewhere to live, we simply can not afford rent on 1 wage and the car we can't afford to get fixed

It sounds vile. Get your Cv out there and start applying for other positions immediately.

pilates · 29/04/2023 06:13

Are you on a month’s trial?

Highfivethatfart · 29/04/2023 06:14

I think I would spend the weekend taking time to write down how I thought the project went, why things were done a certain way etc. so you can explain this at the meeting on Monday. Hopefully the meeting is with the whole team involved and not just you. If it is just you I would ask for clarification why and ask what can you do for next time? Try to make it 'a learn from experience '. I work somewhere with a large HR department so you would have to go through a process before just being sacked - not sure if that happens where you are. Although you don't enjoy the job while you're in your current situation try and show that you're willing and capable, no harm in acknowledging the difference between your previous role. Once your home life is settled then perhaps look to move on - doesn't sound a bundle of fun with people eating lunch in their cars!

barefootgoddess · 29/04/2023 06:41

Sorry OP sounds awful. I'd be tempted to spent the weekend seeing what other jobs are out there. It sounds a horrible place to work regardless of whether they sack you or not!

TheKobayashiMaru · 29/04/2023 06:44

Sounds an odd setup. I'd be looking for other roles.

I would do this. Write everything down so you are prepared for Monday, ask for a support person if you need it. I would also not try and put the blame on other people, you could suggest how things could have been done differently in general and what you could have done better too. It does sound like it's not the right place for you or the right role, so I would also start to look for something else immediately. Maybe this is the push you need for something better, I'm sure you'll look back and think this was a positive thing. Remember if it doesn't rain, it pours. I'd get a list for all of the issues, and work through it. One day at a time, you'll be ok, everything will work out Flowers

Aprilx · 29/04/2023 07:20

How long have the other two people been there? How about your manager? Did you come in at a very senior position? It seems a bit strange to blame the new person for something going wrong.

The job market isn’t bad at the moment. I’d be inclined to go in on Monday and be prepared to resign, better than being dismissed. Make sure they pay your notice period (or allow you to work it).

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 29/04/2023 07:30

Sounds like this new place is toxic. I don’t get why people wouldn’t sit together at lunch or even have a chat to get to know others. They’re there the most amount of their waking hours.

The other two should have put their points across about the project if they were involved.

Also, I find it odd that as a newby you’d be dragged into the office, surely you need time to settle in? I wouldn’t put it past them to use your project and there’s nothing wrong with it and the idea is stolen.

AtChoService · 29/04/2023 07:36

Don't you have your redundancy payout to tide you over a bit?

I'd get looking for something else while minimising the damage here for now, as pp have said.

pilates · 29/04/2023 06:13

2 week trial they said. I've not even been given a contract yet or enrolled in pension scheme as yet so looking like I'm still in the "trial" period

Yeah, when i got made redundant I had two choices. This job or another job exactly same as I had been doing but a bit of a commute, this job I picked because of location, I can literally walk to it in 15 mins rather than spend an hour on public transport to the other

OP posts:
Clarebear81 · 29/04/2023 09:06

It wasn't much, it was only statutory most of it being only 1 weeks pay as I was under 40, so I've about £4k, I'll need at least half of that for deposit and months rent in advance for a new house, leaves £2k, might do a month anyway

OP posts:
strawberryfluff · 29/04/2023 09:07

I'd spend this weekend applying for new jobs. Then when you get one hand in your notice or when you get sacked you'll be like ok cool sure and know you have a job lined up

TooOldForThisNonsense · 29/04/2023 09:10

It sounds awful

definitely look for something new

Stopsnowing · 29/04/2023 09:10

See if the other job you were offered is still available. It might be. And honestly a similar job you know you can do plus a commute sounds better than this!

This was my thinking too, I'm not there to stand talking all day but a "Morning how are you?" I got a grunt, it trying to initiate small talk shot down with 1 word replies, I go into the canteen, there is only 3 of us in there and no one chats. The other 30 odd sit in there own cars by themselves. Very odd behaviour.

Sounds horrible. You've only been there a month but are expected to be fully trained and to have completed a project perfectly? What kind of work is it, broadly?

Yeah sod it, I'll send an email over the weekend, I've also been plagued with "imposter syndrome" in this job, worrying every night whether I'm good enough or doing it right

The other two are there 4/5 years each, the manager over 20. I didn't come in at a senior position as such but the boss seen my CV and experience even checked with my last boss and assumed my skills would be transferable, damn all is transferable, only thing the same is using the same brand of computer lol.

My previous job was designing and planning private kitchens, this is kinda similar but all public sector and social housing so a hell of a lot of regulations and restrictions on materials etc, so we sent out an order, wrong materials used, all comes back to us, but the best thing is yes me made a cock up but the entire thing is checked right through the process, why did no one else catch on?

I am in a very similar situation at the moment. I have been made redundant by the end of March, then just started this new job recently. I felt totally lost & depressed in this new place. I am kind of person who can work very well in a family & friend environment, but I am terrible with very strict environment. I haven't got any proper training this week, my new boss throw me lots notes & asking myself to follow, carry on work base on it. Inevitably I made mistake on my first attempt, then she blame me not to follow her notes properly.
It's very frustrating and depressed environment, everyday on the way back home, I am thinking about handing over notice.

Yes, you totally seem to understand. My previous job everyone was very friendly, we actually became more like friends even the boss we all got on very well, I actually cried on my last day leaving (Still embarrassed as hell over that)

This place has none of that, you are there for 1 thing work and don't talk and no one is even interested in talking, I'm not on about having an all-out conversation I'm talking about just being human with small talk and being civil but nope seems they don't operate that way, and the boss is seen as some high and mighty unapproachable character. Your boss sounds like mine, I have had basically no training in my job, my boss seems to think this job is comparable to my previous and I should know when in reality I may as well have previously worked a checkout in Tesco and my colleagues one is Polish with poor English, the other is English with no interest in helping so that's what you're up against. I know how you feel, even when you're not there it's still playing on your mind, LIke today is Saturday I am still worrying about it and it will inevitably ruin my entire weekend so you are not alone, the frustrating thing is the more you try to get things perfect and right the bigger the chance of it all going wrong.

So I've spent the morning on Indeed panicking I guess and applying for anything and everything, already got 1 rejection on a Saturday too lol

Me too. I already spent the whole morning applying job in indeed. I tried not to think about it, but it just somehow sits in the back of my head.

The thing is I am still in probation period with no any holiday accrued for this new job. If I got an interview, don't know how to take a half day off for that.

Just a chat with one of team members in other department, actually they got two person either walked out or sacked during probation period in last year.
It's horrible...

OP, you are definitely not alone, finger crossed for both of us can move on smoothly, away from this kind of toxic job. We will find something suits us better eventually.😃

Yeah I'm the same, I'm probably still in probation myself, I might have a day accrued but they'll use that for when we close for coronation bank holiday. I had wondered what excuse to use if I get any interview, if I said doctors or something probably be the type of place require proof or something.

I don't know about you but my indeed searching was rather unsuccessful this time around, not much really going compared to when I was looking a few weeks back before this job, actually had two jobs secured and picked the wrong option it seems. Of course I contacted the other company this morning and they said the position is now filled.

I'm sure we will both get sorted it's just the sticking this out in the mean time, well I may not have that choice lol.
