Shift work - colleague not working lates

I work in retail where the staff work various shifts between 8am-10pm.
One member of staff always has the same hours 9am - 2pm and never works a late shift, we all think this is unfair. My colleague told me the reason the staff member works the early shift is because he had cancer and that he was given reasonable adjustments when he started the job eight years ago.
I know that reasonable adjustments are offered but do they usually last for years?

His contract is none of your business. He’s employed to work those hours. When I worked in retail shifts varies from 6am to 10pm and some people always worked earlies, some always lates, it’s suited them and was their contracted hours. Keep your nose out

I varied my hours . It was no one's business. My manager agreed to it.

I used to work p/t retail when my DD was younger. I did 10-2 every shift anround school times, agreed when I started. I’d have been gutted if my colleagues had been slagging me off behind my back for never working closing or opening.

Perhaps he still ha cancer - people do you know. Irrespective his contracted hours are none of your business.

Unless you’re the manager of this person it’s none of your business. He could have lasting health problems and he has no need to disclose them to you or anyone else!

I have set hours at my job and no one else does. I have had them since I started as I could only work those hours and I was lucky that those were suitable for the job. None of your business. If you want to work set shifts, then ask.

Urgh. 'We all think this is unfair' = you and your workmates are gossiping about someone who has been given reasonable adjustments for health reasons. You all sound delightful.

If you need to amend your own hours, why not talk to your line management about that?

chances are it affects OP as they have to cover more lates
ask you manager about doing less rather than asking directly why the other person doesn’t do lates

anything like this does have a knock on effect and ultimately affects OP

we have it with when people ask for flexible working amazing how the only days the majority (80%) can’t get childcare for is ether a Monday or Friday meaning they have a fixed day off resulting in the rest of us never getting a long weekend

If you don't like your own contract discuss this with your manager.

I work mornings only. Which means my colleague has to work late shift. They knew this when they accepted the job.

What on earth is wrong with you? A cancer diagnosis means you are classed as disabled for the rest of your life and are covered under equality legislation. Yes, the shift pattern for your colleague is more than reasonable. People have different shift patterns for all sorts of reasons. I’m in a shift job myself.

if he was there before OP and it was clear to OP what shifts she would be working, it is absolutely none of her business

OP if that person has disabilities they are covered by the equality act, failure to implement reasonable adjustments is discriminatory so the employer would be open to being sued. A lot of disabilities are not curable, so yes, last for years.
