Anyone else struggling to find work?

Unemployednobody · 29/03/2023 13:49

I'm unfortunately unemployed and desperately seeking a new role as I'm so lonely and losing my mind.

Jeremy Hunt said there are <insert vast number here> roles in the UK on the Find a Job government website...

Well, I just had a look (Usually use LinkedIn and Indeed) and most of the roles on there in my area are

  1. self employed leaflet distributors
  2. NHS consultants
  3. self employed cleaners for £10 PH

Disappointed, dismayed and shocked. Is anyone else struggling to find a role?

Have a look on civil service jobs

Knullrufs · 30/03/2023 11:39

I’m freelance and it’s not so much that there’s no work, but that things like ghosting have become so commonplace in the work world now that I feel like I’m shouting into a void the entire time.

I have and we don't have any here :(

@Knullrufs Yes! I've applied for 65 roles and nobody is getting back to me. It's like "heellloooooo? I spent a while editing my CV and writing a good Covering Letter for you" or "hellloooo? I spent hours answering all the questions in the star format" - even our council failed to get back to me. No apology, nothing!

It's so odd. I spoke to a recruiter yesterday who was just SO horrible. I didn't deserve it :/ I remained cool, calm and nice throughout.

I think the recruitment industry needs an overhaul tbh

LinkedIn is SHIT for recruitment- I've been on the other side of it and it's hellish managing applicants.

I feel all ranty 🤣

I started looking for work at the end of January and have just recently accepted an offer.

The vast majority of jobs advertised around here are cleaners, carers and construction workers, and they all ask for specific prior experience (which I don't have).

What I would say is that some places are VERY slow to shortlist after the closing date, so unless you've had an actual rejection don't assume it's over!

Of the jobs I interviewed for (or had interviews scheduled for), they came from:

3 x Indeed
2 x LinkedIn
1 x Find a job (gov site)

Hang in there!

Unemployednobody · 30/03/2023 15:37

Ooh @GlorifiedChair thank you so much for your post and congratulations!!

I will hang in there. I just have to stop refreshing Indeed. And Find a Job (Gov) has mainly leaflet distributor jobs - which is just so odd.

Thank you. You've given me hope!

Things have certainly turned for the worse in my profession. Been looking since December and had 3 interviews.

One I didn't get past first stage
One the role got pulled
One I nearly got it but pipped at the post

A year ago I was on the market and had 9 interviews over around 2 months 2 offers unfortunately the one I accepted isn't working out.

Depressing.

Unemployednobody · 30/03/2023 18:27

@BluebellBlueballs that's pretty similar to me actually. Last year I had so many opportunities! This year, nothing.

I'm freaking out a little bit. My MH is rock bottom!!

OP posts:
anon666 · 30/03/2023 18:32

I found the same. Also it was depressing to keep sending off job applications and getting rejected or no response.

That gradual disappointment as your hopes die off.

It's a truly horrible process and one that's completely dehumanising. V hard not to take it personally. I'm an interim and dreading having to look for my next placement.

Unemployednobody · 30/03/2023 18:33

completely dehumanising you've described exactly how I feel!

OP posts:
BluebellBlueballs · 30/03/2023 19:03

It's shit being on the job market but equally shit being in the wrong job, it's like 'choose your shit'. At least being on the market with all the rejection and raised/dashed hopes there is chance of a better day.

It's bad enough in a candidate's market but things are tough out there right now. I feel like the recession is just impacting and it will get worse before better

Cherryblossoms85 · 30/03/2023 19:04

Maybe you can DM the OP who's looking for a well paid nanny!

I nearly gave my notice in, ended up pouring my heart out to my boss. Expected a 'well, there's the door' response but she seemed keen to make things better. Long term it won't ever be right but maybe it will be a bit more bearable to give me time to get something else decent

HappyJellyBaby · 30/03/2023 19:15

Yes me too. Got made redundant late last year, very little to apply for, not getting interviews for the stuff that is out there. It's so frustrating because I know I'm a good worker. I have loads of qualifications (degree, professional qual, CPD). I keep on and on lowering my salary expectations and I'm still getting rejected. Other applicants' skills and experience are better aligned with their expectations. Bah.

Linked in shows me loads of jobs in Southampton- I'm in the North East.

Unemployednobody · 30/03/2023 19:27

@HappyJellyBaby SO similar!! It's shit isn't it. LinkedIn is awful. I've recruited via LinkedIn and it was a nightmare too

The results are way off and sometimes completely random! Even with all the filters on

Same here witpth 109s of NHS and teacher jobs. Then the commission only ones. I cold called my network and I have two interviews next week. Maybe try that. Both are ideal jobs perfect fit cos I called them. I haven't even been seen by DWP yet they are so backlogged. aaot on Monday over a month since my job ended.

Unemployednobody · 30/03/2023 19:41

I just checked today's and it literally just had hundreds of "Salaried GPs" and "Consultants" - lovely salaries mind. £100,000+ 😂

OP posts:
FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 30/03/2023 19:43

What types of jobs are you looking for?

Are you just searching locally or also looking under Homeworking and Remote?

Unemployednobody · 30/03/2023 19:52

@FatAgainItsLettuceTime my experience is comms and project management (construction and FMGC). I also have a degree in IT but loathe coding.

I'd rather be onsite due to feeling isolated however I'm also looking for remote working.

The closest I got was a Data Analyst role for the local authority. The pay was £21,000 and I used STAR to prove my transferable skills. They gave the role to someone internally 4 weeks before I was even interviewed. 😂

I'm having more success with onsite roles. I'm very technical and I can pick up new software really quickly.

There's just nothing out there apart from self employed leaflet distribution and £100k NHS consultant jobs.

I've just been on LinkedIn to find out a huge software business local to me has ceased trading. They employed 45 people!

I'm surprised you are having no look in construction as I work in that field and we constantly have several vacancies (not in the north east though I'm Afraid)

Twinedpeaks · 30/03/2023 20:22

What kind of job are you looking for? What was your last roles(s)?

RoseMartha · 30/03/2023 20:30

Sending a hug

I have been looking and applied for about 15-20, not unemployed yet but my job is coming to an end as I will be made redundant this year at some point in next couple of months.

I haven't had one interview and mostly you dont even get a notification from indeed or wherever that you are not successful to the next stage. I have had some messages from indeed where you have to answer questions and that is as far as it goes.

Unemployednobody · 30/03/2023 20:42

@RoseMartha Thank you. Big hugs to you too! Good luck out there x

@Twinedpeaks my last role was a Document Controller. But I have plenty of transferable skills in communications and data too. And AutoCAD!

I understand that construction roles are less WFH. But there's barely any office based roles anywhere local.

I have no desire to earn good money - just NMW ish...

Whereabouts are you?

Summergarden · 30/03/2023 21:34

I remember how soul destroying it was looking for a job OP. plus people told me I stood no chance as I’d been a SAHM for 5 years. Luckily I found a job I wasn’t sure about initially but am glad I gave it a chance because I love it.

I found Indeed.com to be good and also the ‘work from home hub’ on Facebook if it’s still going was brilliant.

Hang on in there, the right one will come along.
