If you WFH, do you sit outside in the summer?

Just curious, I love being outdoors when it's warm. I've recently taken a role where I WFH permanently and wondered if anyone else sit in the sun whilst they work? Even if they have to do teams meeting etc? Or do you go inside for them.

I used to sit outside with paperwork when I worked in the office so should be quite easy at home.

crisscross101 · 27/03/2023 17:27

No, but I do work with the bifolds open. Like others have said, glare on the screen would be too much. I do read papers outside though if I can (all year round so long as it's dry!)

Anjelika · 27/03/2023 17:39

I do sometimes. Like one PP mentioned upthread, I just get a large cardboard box, put it on its side and put my laptop in it. I am in the sun and can still see my screen. I tend to do it for stuff I only need 1 screen for though and do the 2-screen work indoors in the morning.

Mutabiliss · 27/03/2023 17:46

Not really, I need two screens. I do have the patio doors open though so get the breeze and can see the garden from my desk.

I'll occasionally do an informal team meeting from the garden, though my wifi doesn't always extend far enough to sit in the shade so it depends on the time of day.

KillingEvenings · 27/03/2023 17:48

I do if the sun glare isn't too much. Glad to know about the box trick - will try that if we ever have sunny day again.

Re it being "unprofessional" I'm really not sure how. Surely my sitting at a table outside is more "professional" than colleagues working on a sofa or (gasp!) my boss taking calls from the end of her bed. Really, as long as the work gets done and its not distracting that's all that should matter, right?

It's this kind of bs that gives wfh-ers a reputation for slackness !

What, being outside? 😂

greenacrylicpaint · 27/03/2023 17:49

no - due to the glare.
plus too noisy.

ClassicLib · 27/03/2023 17:50

I would love to sit outside & work, but unfortunately my laptop screen is nowhere near bright enough to be visible in the sunshine. And I get hay fever. And I’m a magnet for every mozzie in a five mile radius.

Oblomov23 · 27/03/2023 17:56

No. I can't see computer. I get too hot. I don't sunbathe as such. So no.

Heinzbakedbeans · 27/03/2023 17:58

I don't work outside as I like having 2 screens and can't be bothered to set that up but I sit out during lunch. I couldn't do meetings as it isn't private enough for my line of work

DuesToTheDirt · 27/03/2023 17:59

No. I use a proper keyboard/mouse and 2 monitors, a laptop wouldn't cut it, and also I'd want a desk rather than balancing it on my lap. And as others have said there's the issue of seeing the screen, and privacy for calls (mine aren't especially secret, but I don't want to annoy neighbours with work calls when they're relaxing).

Willmafrockfit · 27/03/2023 18:00

not allowed due to confidentiality

Yep, working from your bed or sofa is also unprofessional, not to mention dangerous to your health in terms of back pain etc.

Multiblue · 27/03/2023 18:06

I have worked outside under a patio awning, butnuts too noisy for phonecalls and meetings. You'd be surprised how noisy a "peaceful" garden is. Birdsong, dogs, crying babies, lawnmowers, radios, next door's car door. Not generally loud enough to bother you or even really notice, but a problem on a call.

Tuters · 27/03/2023 18:19

I do and have a outdoor office area set up.
My work is very confidential but have no neighbours and can see anyone approaching the house easily but I'm in the back garden area so they can't see me ,I also wear AirPods.

TitoMojito · 27/03/2023 18:29

I do! It's really nice being outside.

BoxOfCats · 27/03/2023 19:30

BiliousOhGod · 27/03/2023 11:54

Yep. I have a temporary outside set-up, with an umbrella over the table, so I can see, extension cord to keep the laptop charged, a few spare chairs dotted around so the cat can sit near me in sun/shade and a headset so that I can hear / talk without being overheard (I'm far enough away from neighbours that they can't hear normal volume conversations). It's ace!

This is exactly what I do too. The cats love me working outside too!

Periornot · 27/03/2023 19:36

I did. If at an office with any outside space or a few minutes from outdoor seating at a cafe, did same for reading documents, short meetings with one or two others. For long periods at laptop I wouldn't as too bright, but editing, reviewing or reading off paper documents I found it fine.

Simonjt · 27/03/2023 20:30

Yes, I sit on the balcony when its nice, I have a matte effect privacy cover on my laptop screen, it is very good at preventing glare, so that solves being able to see the screen in bright light.

PureGoldLeaf · 27/03/2023 20:33

No, I work from a desktop with two screens through a sonic wall connection. A lot of my work is sensitive so I could never take a call outside.

I do sit outside at lunchtime though.

ErrolTheDragon · 27/03/2023 20:36

No, I can't work effectively just on a laptop (even if I could see the screen in the sunshine) - need 2 monitors, dock, keyboard and Ethernet cable.

However, I do some of my thinking while wandering about deadheading and weeding. I'm rubbish at just sitting in the garden.

blondieminx · 27/03/2023 20:38

No as my laptop screen is too hard to see in the sun. But I have meals and my lunchbreak outside!

would not dream of doing meetings outside, would be fired for not keeping things confidential!

AlltheFs · 27/03/2023 20:47

Yes sometimes.

We have a garden office that is primarily DH’s but I do use it and have the doors wide open on that but also sit out in other areas. Our garden wraps around so we have North, South, East and West options and also we are rural with few neighbours so noone to disturb really.

I don’t do anything confidential though in terms of Teams meetings etc outside. But I did type up a million appraisals and similar whilst getting a tan last year. The only issue is the overheating laptop sometimes and your wifi range. We have good coverage in most of the garden but not 100% although I can switch to mobile hotspot too.

Colleagues find my hens invading calls amusing. The little buggers seem fascinated with a laptop.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 27/03/2023 20:50

Absolutely I do, it's made me happy just thinking about it!

Verylongtime · 27/03/2023 20:51

No. I use a PC and two monitors, all wired in.
