If you WFH, do you sit outside in the summer?

Just curious, I love being outdoors when it's warm. I've recently taken a role where I WFH permanently and wondered if anyone else sit in the sun whilst they work? Even if they have to do teams meeting etc? Or do you go inside for them.

@funnelfan my neighbours twins constant screeching is also bad manners so this is payback 🙂

Deathbyfluffy · 27/03/2023 14:42

Yes I do - if your laptop has an ultra-bright screen it’s possible even in direct sunlight.

LadyDanburysHat · 27/03/2023 14:49

I go outside for meetings that I only need to listen to. It is nice to move around a little.

MsFogi · 27/03/2023 14:51

No (it's just not practical in the sun) but I do eat breakfast and lunch outside in the summer when wfh which is great.

My neighbour spent a lot of time in the garden on Teams calls last summer. I did not appreciate it and I doubt anyone else in the road did either.

It isn't fair to inflict that on neighbours and I don't suppose her boss would have approved of everyone hearing their business.

Agreed! Selfish bastards

PleaseJustText · 27/03/2023 15:07

I've done it a few times but not often because I have to ask my DH to do something to get the wi-fi to reach the shady table at the end of the garden. Obviously I head indoors for meetings.

Abracadabra12345 · 27/03/2023 15:25

Floofydawg · 27/03/2023 14:03

Yeah I do, I sit in the shade and I can see the laptop screen.

As for annoying the neighbours whilst on calls, people talk in their gardens all the time. How is this any different?

I don't know how or why but people always raise their voices during calls. My neighbour has a particularly booking voice. It's also like sitting next to someone on public transport where they have loud phone conversations: somehow much more annoying than two people chatting.

The quiet babble of conversation from people in their gardens is part of summer and quite pleasant. Work calls are a whole different irritation

Floofydawg · 27/03/2023 15:27

To be fair I deliberately speak quietly whilst on calls. There's plenty my neighbours do which pisses me off so I don't see why I shouldn't enjoy my garden in the summer.

AdaBrady · 27/03/2023 15:51

Yes.

I live rurally and have a big garden so nobody around to disturb, or need to worry about being overheard.

I have a patio with a pergola type thing that’s automatic so I can have the roof part and sides slide as I need to adjust for light/glare etc.

It’s lovely to be able to get fresh air while I work. I’m very unapologetic about it too so rock up to Teams meeting either my sunglasses on, if needed.

MyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 27/03/2023 15:53

I love setting up my work on the deck when the weather is nice. Makes the work day much more pleasant. I don’t work from home all the time, but when I do, that is a big attraction for me to be able to be outdoors while I work.

MyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 27/03/2023 15:55

When I work from home though, it is to be able to concentrate on a report I am writing or to catch up on administrative tasks. I don’t have Team meetings or even conversations outdoors. No one would even know I’m out there.

JavaChip · 27/03/2023 15:56

It's this kind of bs that gives wfh-ers a reputation for slackness !

Why though? Is it so inconceivable that we're actually working?

countrygirl99 · 27/03/2023 16:23

Unfortunatelymy work phone is on O2 and I can only get a decent signal upstairs. On bad days I have to stand on the loo. Thankfully a lot of the time I'm on Teams but communication with contractors is usually on the phone.

whoruntheworldgirls · 27/03/2023 16:24

Yep, either put a parasol up or put the laptop in a big cardboard box so i can still see it but with me in the sun :-) roll on summer.
If on a camera on call, depending who with, i'll go back inside.

wonkylegs · 27/03/2023 16:34

I have a studio at home and I have bifolds across the whole back wall so can open them up to the garden and still be on my desktop

Callmenat · 27/03/2023 16:35

Absolutely not, very unprofessional.

You could argue, though, that companies now cutting costs by not paying for proper office space is also unprofessional in my opinion.

PlateBilledDuckyPerson · 27/03/2023 16:50

No, not a hope of being able to see my laptop screen clearly in the sun. It's hard enough when the sun comes through the window.

I think most businesses would rather staff were in Al the time but don't wish to lose that differential in retaining and attracting talent.

Surely headphones in that situation?! I use headphones for all teams calls.

By what objective criteria is it unprofessional? Especially in contrast to sitting at the kitchen table or a home office?

MrMarkham · 27/03/2023 17:19

My wifi doesn't reach to the garden

WalkAwaySugarbear · 27/03/2023 17:20

Not yet as we don't have outdoor furniture yet but I hope to in the future. I don't take many calls so as long as I can see the screen, I'd be fine.

Hailtheteam · 27/03/2023 17:22

I live in a flat and Wi-Fi wouldn’t reach. I’m also on a helpline so need quiet background. Would love to though.
