Less money but more interesting job ?

mycatsanutter · 31/01/2023 11:37

I have a pretty boring job but for the hours and area it's not bad pay . Im literally left to my own devices and have no one to answer to, no prospects though. Occasionally I look for another job but never really find anything to match the hours and the pay. However I had an interview on Friday and pretty sure I'm going to get offered the job ( friend works there and they have as good as told her and they have just called me but I couldn't answer ) . Now this job pays less as it's less per hour and 4 hours less a week meaning £200 less a month . But there are extra shifts every week to pick up meaning I could match my wage now and even earn more by doing more shifts . It's a job where I would be learning new skills that could lead to other positions in the future where I am now I will never go anywhere . What would you do ? Stay put and be bored or more hours for the same money ?

yes, if the extra work is doable and doesn't mean you have no free time any more. Interesting job with development opportunities definitely beats a boring one with no prospects, especially if the difference is 200 per month. Could you negotiate?

mycatsanutter · 31/01/2023 12:27

No negotiation, the wage is set by the owners and 13 people do that job and everyone is paid the same . Just wish it was more money I feel I should be earning more at my age not less , but I suppose I need to see it as a stepping stone to something more maybe

I did this years ago. It took years to finally turn it back round but it has happened now so it’s finally paid off

what id look it is if you can negotiate salary /benefits to bump it a bit. You want to be comfortable every month at your basic especially with cost of living going up. There’s gonna be times you really don’t wanna pull those extra shifts etc. and I don’t like always lots of shifts available. That means it’s either crap enough that no one what’s to do it or they start taking the piss out of your accommodating nature and giving you the shite shifts. Just be wary of that xx

Pssspsss · 31/01/2023 12:31

Sorry also to add what’s everything else like.

eg I imagine your current role is almost like working for yourself and lots of autonomy can take leave when you want etc.

the new place kinda seems not like that. Plus I always think job security long term. A small independent business - can it continue what are the prospects etc, is it possible it could fold etc etc

mycatsanutter · 31/01/2023 12:34

@Pssspsss thank you , the shifts are set so I already know what they are ( I like them ) then there are extra ones if people are on holiday / ill etc . She showed me the shift pattern and basically the needed shifts were highlighted and you put your name down next to them . ( it's a Drs surgery ) . I work for a family business atm , been here 28 years 😩

OP posts:
Pssspsss · 31/01/2023 13:03

@mycatsanutter okay so job security is gonna be pretty good.

drs surgeries can be SHITE but if you’ve got a friend happy there than that’s a positive.

yes to progression. It’s definitely probably more doable moving into healthcare and you can up the bands with qualifications etc. and if you are happy with the shift pattern that’s cool.

i think the only downside is potentially annual leave. You could all be scrapping for Same weeks if you have kids xx

mycatsanutter · 31/01/2023 13:21

@Pssspsss thank you for answering, my friend is a nurse there and is very happy . Yep definitely job security! God I wish it was more money . She already asked me what holidays I had booked and said my August week was fine . I'm very very bored where I work but I have it so so easy but I will still be sitting at the same desk in 5 years doing the same thing with the same people ( we have all been here years !)

OP posts:
Pssspsss · 31/01/2023 15:01

yeah that’s your pre booked ones they’ll always honour them. I think you need to think what are all the pros of current job and the cons and weigh up against new job.

i recently had a move that’s less hours but it’s more money and loads less stress. Holidays are a bit sketchy though some mad shifts And it’s massively different - I think I’ve made the right choice though 🥹

mycatsanutter · 31/01/2023 15:21

Pros of current job are 1) not much stress 2) day off a week 3) quite flexible with holidays 4) Not bad money for the hours Cons - 1) quite a bitchy atmosphere ( one of the bosses hasn't actually spoke to me for over 2 months now apart from hello but that's another story !) 2) Will never progress as it's a family business 3) I'm very bored 4) the premises are relocating soon and all staff will be sitting together I'm absolutely dreading this , we don't all get along well enough for this to work .

mycatsanutter · 31/01/2023 15:23

Pros of new job - learning new skills that could lead to something else in the future. Opportunities to earn extra money , (I'm on a salary at the moment ) being part of a team ( I currently sit on my own all day ) . Aaah why doesn't it bloody pay more !!

OP posts:
Pssspsss · 31/01/2023 16:36

Hmm I’d be swayed to new job and take any and all extra shifts you can/want to make up wage. And maybe try and stash some i savings for a rainy day/month you wanna scale back on overtime eg school holidays (assuming you have kids) I’d then take on any and all training opportunities and Try to get your band increased by promotion xx

mycatsanutter · 31/01/2023 21:04

@Pssspsss thank you ! I have had the call offering me the job and I have took it ! I feel so excited but so nervous about handing my notice in tomorrow my boss will be so shocked . But you are right regarding the extra shifts and maybe one day it will lead to something more 😀

OP posts:
Pssspsss · 31/01/2023 22:41

Aww @mycatsanutter congratulations! I’d not hand in your notice though til you’ve received a confirmation of start date and a copy of contract 😜 nhs can take a LONG time to get through recruitment. I expect GP will be much quicker but still some possible hoops such as maybe DBS? Plus references… I’d maybe call the recruiter back tomorrow and ask if they can email over contract, what pre employment checks they do and how long for start date so you can give the correct notice period and not have any employment gaps 😜

mycatsanutter · 31/01/2023 23:09

Thank you , I'm dealing with the management direct at the surgery and she has sent me the dbs information already and contract is being sent in the post . Thanks for your time today really appreciate it x

Just checking, when you say you work for a family business right now, is it your family’s business or just a small business run by a family?

You sound bored out of your mind, definitely worth taking the cut as it will likely even up over time anyway. Go for it!

mycatsanutter · 01/02/2023 07:23

Not my family business unfortunately or I would be rich ! I am so so bored I sit by myself , go on mumsnet , drink coffee to stay awake even thou I don't like the taste , text my friends all whilst working because I can do the job with my eyes shut . A challenge and a change is definitely needed!! I have only really stayed this long because the hours are so convenient with dc.

Mumof1andacat · 01/02/2023 07:38

Have you got your new job offer confirmed in writing first ,? Is it subject to dbs check?

cantdecideforanother · 01/02/2023 07:46

Yes, I've done this. I've gone from feeling stressed, hating work, to feeling much happier, more time to myself, my mental health has improved and dc are happier. Wish I'd have done it years ago. Lots of job progression so I know in a Few years it will be worth it

Cheesedoffandgrumpy · 01/02/2023 08:26

"No negotiation, the wage is set by the owners and 13 people do that job and everyone is paid the same"

My second to last job, they told me this too. Found out after a year, when everyone got a paycut, that this was a lie.

seperatedmum · 01/02/2023 08:42

it all sounds very risky and like you're taken in by your friend's experience which might not be yours at all and as for gaining skills to move up and leave 🤔 but you've taken it now 🤷🏽‍♀️ £200 is a lot to make up in extra shifts on what I get paid in healthcare and the grass is always greener, you never know what's around the corner etc etc but you've taken it now so good luck

mycatsanutter · 01/02/2023 09:42

@Cheesedoffandgrumpy the wage is set by the doctors .

OP posts:
mycatsanutter · 01/02/2023 09:46

@seperatedmum it's one extra shift a week which makes it only 2 hours more a week than what I'm doing now as the contract for the new job is 2.5 hours less a week than what I do now . I know it's a bit of a gamble but 28 years in a job I haven't enjoyed for the last 10 is a long time . I think I could look back back on my life in 20 years time and be annoyed that I didn't try anything else .

OP posts:
mycatsanutter · 01/02/2023 09:49

@cantdecideforanother glad you had a positive experience. I am literally going nowhere where I am now whereas working at a Drs there is scope for promotion / job in a hospital . I want to do something more worthwhile eventually than line my bosses pockets . Did it take you many years to progress?

When you hand in your notice, op, give me the heads up so I can apply for your job! Grin Grin
