I'm nosey and I wanna know what you all do.

If you work what do you do?
Are you fulfilling a childhood dream?
Do you love your job?
Are you a SAHP?

I'm a Teaching Assistant in a middle school (soon to change to the 2 tier system) I always wanted to be a teacher since I was a little girl but working with SEND children makes me want to stay more working with them than going into teaching. I love my job though 😃

Talk to me

I'm an accountant. (Accountancy Degree and professional qualification).
I work in engineering and like my job as I have lots of flexibility and a rapport I would never get anywhere else (I've used the phrase "I'm not fucking doing it so don't ask") On the flip side there's lots of outside of my hours work and it's not purely accounting anymore.

I always wanted to be a pilot. Watched top gun 2 recently. Felt sad I didn't pursue that path as I could have.

Caniretractthat · 21/01/2023 23:32

Im an engineer, never in my childhood did i plan that. Every now and then i really get into my job..90% im bored but it pays. Cant be a SAHP if im working?!

RicciardoPerez · 21/01/2023 23:33

FOI officer.

No idea how I fell into this.... I wanted to be a hair dresser or beauty therapist lol!

Wildehorses · 21/01/2023 23:35

Journalist, about 10 years off retirement. Never a dull moment, started out in newspapers, now work in radio/online media. Always worked full time. Hours are tough, plenty of late nights, weekends etc but love what I do and my colleagues are wonderful. Husband is semi retired so our two teenagers have an adult at home with them most of the time.

Wildehorses · 21/01/2023 23:36

And yes, it was my childhood dream to work in the media!

Azra12 · 21/01/2023 23:38

I'm a librarian in a secondary school... got a degree in law and done my LPC but this job turned up when I was a SAHM... it's part time and just down the road from where I live. Don't know how I go here but it's working incredibly well so far

QuizteamAguillera · 21/01/2023 23:38

StillWantingADog · 21/01/2023 23:39

Headhunter.
def not what I envisaged doing but I work for a good company with good people and I’m good at it.

Christmascracker0 · 21/01/2023 23:39

I’m a tax adviser (private client, in accounting). I don’t love it and did so many awful exams to get to this point. I’m thinking of a career change but not sure what.

I wanted to be a teacher when I was little!

pompomdaisy · 21/01/2023 23:40

Senior Lecturer ( Nursing) in a university.

I'm not sure about fulfilling a childhood dream because I never thought this job would be possible. My mum wanted me to work in a local shop!

Do I enjoy it? Absolutely, but I've enjoyed every stage of my career; staff nurse, sister, matron, lecturer.

Toomanybirthdays · 21/01/2023 23:42

I am a registered nurse. I work at a care home and it is a fabulous home with happy residents and staff 😊Definitely better than working for NHS ..only downside is the bloody paperwork.

I'm intrigued, I love the violin! Such a beautiful sounding instrument.
Do you teach other people to play or do you play professionally in shows/concert etc?

If you work what do you do?
Secondary maths and science teacher

Are you fulfilling a childhood dream?
Not at all. Wanted to be a vet (I had I no idea of anything)

Do you love your job?
I do actually, but that is because the kids in this school are lovely. Workload is stupid, but that is teaching. My job is fantastic but give me 75% of the workload with 100% of the wages. Anyone who has taught in a classroom knows what I mean.

Are you a SAHP? no

bert3400 · 21/01/2023 23:48

Business owner. DH started it 13 years ago, I jumped on board to do admin etc 10 years ago . I now know a lot more about the building/planning system than I ever expected to. We have 4 employee's + me & DH. It's given us an amazing life and allowed us to move abroad and work remotely. Luckily we weren't effected by lockdown and things are still ticking along very nicely but you never take it for granted.

Chat2224 · 21/01/2023 23:48

I’m a crisis support worker for a mental health charity.

I’m not fulfilling a childhood dream but it’s all I can do at the minute

Not a SAHP but work pt.

QuizteamAguillera · 21/01/2023 23:55

@FlamingoElephant I work for an orchestra full time although I have one student that I teach. I don’t have time to teach more as it’s hard to fit it in.

MrsHarrisgoestoTimbuctoo · 21/01/2023 23:56

Physiotherapist (private practice)

scoobydoo1971 · 21/01/2023 23:57

I was retired from my professional role (medical field) a few years ago. I now run a family holiday rental business, albeit part-time. I hate it, and would do anything to abandon this. Just not possible at the moment. I miss the clients from my former career. This is tedious, and constantly chasing people. Suppliers, customers and so on. I do not have the customer service skills to cope with guest meltdowns. Some people in this industry must have the patience of a saint.

HundredMilesAnHour · 21/01/2023 23:58

If you work what do you do?
Management consultant / programme manager in banking in the City

Are you fulfilling a childhood dream?
Nope. I wanted to be an architect but hated technical drawing (and was rubbish at it). Then I wanted to be a vet but I get too upset when animals are suffering. Eventually I wanted to be a barrister but I come from a poor working class background so couldn't have survived financially.

Do you love your job?
At times. It is stressful, very competitive and VERY political. You can never have had a bad moment, let alone a bad day as you are judged constantly. But it has its rewarding moments. I basically have a love-hate relationship with my job.

Are you a SAHP?
God no! I can't think of anything worse.

StormSeason · 22/01/2023 00:02

Y'all have some great jobs!
I am a sahm and have never done anything else. It's my dream job and I'm literally living my dream. I'm very thankful to be able to do it.

1982mommaof4 · 22/01/2023 00:16

I was a SAHM, absolutely loved it but I was drained after four years

Now work in the charity sector with Deaf clients been doing this for 6 years

Training to be an interpreter

Always wanted to be in the army growing up then a mum, so completely different to what I am doing

1982mommaof4 · 22/01/2023 00:17

Love my area of work but not my current role

MoscowMules · 22/01/2023 00:21

I currently work in the Criminal Justice System.

Not a childhood dream, I wanted to be a nurse 🤣 but soon realised I didn't have the stomach for it.

I do however really enjoy my job, I sit more on the rehabilitation/care/support of offenders rather than the stricter side of life, I'm not a civil servant.

It's very rewarding helping/supporting people to overcome barriers/challenges and see some turn their life's around in unimaginable ways which in turn also helps society as a whole.

mozzyworries · 22/01/2023 08:23

Marketing/digital and I really like it. I have a set area that I look after but been very lucky that the companies I've worked for have let me flex into other related areas to so I get to work on a lot of things that use my brain.

Not my childhood dream, I wanted to be a photographer or a potter, but realised about 16/17 that I preferred to keep my hobbies as hobbies and do a job which pays very well.

I've thought lots of times over the years about doing more craft based work, but always come back to wanting to work the least hours for the most pay and lowest stress so I can enjoy my time off doing those hobbies and get to go on nice holidays/buy what I want as well.

curveballqueen · 22/01/2023 08:28

Project manager for a police force. Started off in engineering and ended up here.

I love it about 80% of the time, the rest is political frustrations!

I work full time, but 3 days in the office and 2 from home - it's a lot of site work as well, and can be very reactive, so short notice. Kids are now old enough to be left at home which makes it easier.

I'm not sure I'm fulfilling a childhood dream exactly, but both my parents were avowed public sector, Labour voting, union members in the 70's/80's, so probably not surprising I ended up in the public sector as well. It's more than "just" a job to me
