4 day week but which day off?

Currently full time 35 hours but looking at dropping a day a week and doing 32 hours across four days but I have no idea which day to have off. Those who are part time what days did you choose to have off?

I am thinking maybe a Monday or Friday so I get a long weekend but could be convinced by other days.

I am probably slightly more drawn to a Monday as most Bank Holidays fall on a Monday and in my mind this I’d have less “forced” annual leave days and have more days to choose to have off with my annual leave allowance.

Wednesday, because then you never have to work more than two days in a row before you get a break.

confusedlots · 08/12/2022 20:46

Definitely Monday off for exactly the reason you gave. You end up with much more flexibility to take your days off when you want instead of having to use a big chunk of them for the bank holidays.

UnderPowered · 08/12/2022 20:47

Definitely Mondays, as you then get annual leave that you can use at another time.

I'm not sure whether this is contract-dependent - there's certainly a lot of confusion on MN about it. I suspect a lot of companies do the wrong thing on purpose though.

^annual leave for bank holiday Mondays

Hoolihan · 08/12/2022 20:49

Monday all the way. I get the annual leave back and never have that awful Sunday feeling. Sundays are a pleasure, as are Momdays getting my head together for the week ahead, doing admin, sorting the house out, just having space to breathe! Plus Friday is generally more relaxed at work anyway so I would rather work that day.

When I did 4 days I had Wednesdays off. I loved it because it really broke the week up. Also DD was tiny so I liked that she only had two days on the run at nursery. I didn't like the idea of Mondays because of the bank holiday issue. Friday would have been nice too for the longer weekends. A fair few colleagues do that.

Wednesday here, love how it's quiet for doing activities with my little one. Great to only work 2 days in a row.
Is a bit of a slog catching up though as Wednesday feels a very peak working day, but you can the quieter Fridays to get your head down

SpellitwithaY · 08/12/2022 20:53

Mondays here. I get the Monday bank holidays added back into my annual leave so I can book them when I want to and....

I get to say "see you next Tuesday" EVERY single week to my boss 😁

I have Wednesdays off. I love it. Never work more than two days in a row

Do you have children? Preschoolers?

Do you have friends who work 4 days (or less?)

Hobbies you'd like to do? Lessons you'd like to take?

Really think about what you want to do in your days off. That might determine which day is best. Failing that Monday for me! I get the occasional Monday or Friday off (it's for company reasons so not a choice) I look forward to the Mondays much more. Friday feels like a waster of the 'TGIF feeling.

Another vote for Wednesday's, love my "mid-week weekend"!

I've also had alternate Mon/Fri off, that was lovely every other week for the super long weekend!

MiniCooperLover · 08/12/2022 20:57

Fridays. Mondays mean you don't get the benefit of most of the bank holidays like everyone else does.

Nix32 · 08/12/2022 20:58

Definitely Wednesday. Easier to be kept in the loop when you're there for the beginning and end of the week. Also loved never having to work more than 2 days in a row!

Jaybird43 · 08/12/2022 20:58

I had Wednesday as I hated the midweek slump! And if it’s a bank holiday Monday, I would book the Tuesday off and have a nice 5 day weekend!

purplejungle · 08/12/2022 21:00

Monday off because it works so much better for bank holidays

SevernEleven · 08/12/2022 21:02

Wednesday are good. But recently Wednesdays have become quite busy so when I come in Thursday can seem like a second Monday.

I'm thinking to swap to Thursday and do 3 intensive days and a bit of a coast/catch up on Fridays. I love being in the office on a Friday as hardly anyone is in, so I can play music and get loads done without being interrupted.

KnickerlessParsons · 08/12/2022 21:02

I have every other Wednesday off. I do my 70 hours over 9 days instead of 10. It's like having an extra weekend.

comedycentral · 08/12/2022 21:05

Don't go for Monday's, lots of places close like museums as they are open at the weekend! Friday or a Wednesday!

Where we are to work 35 hours it is Monday to thursday 7.5 hours and Friday 7 hours. So most people take Fridays off

GreenTeaTuesdays · 08/12/2022 21:06

Check the guidelines. Both my current and previous employer let me take another day off in lieu if there was a bank holiday. If you get that then Monday 100000%.

Lmgify · 08/12/2022 21:06

Sorry 37 hours!!

GrannieD · 08/12/2022 21:10

Another Wednesday here.....that feeling on a Tuesday at 4 bells is heavenly !

Anothernamechange1010 · 08/12/2022 21:10

Monday off

  • I always hated Monday at work, as did a lot of colleagues so lots of people in a pissy mood, also couldn't be bothered with the 'did you have a nice weekend / what did you get up to' questions every.single.week.
  • by Tuesday nobody is bothered to ask and you don't have to ask anyone either.

Friday also had a 'here comes the weekend' chilled vibe, much nicer, plus if there's after work drinks it's usually on a Friday

3partypics · 08/12/2022 21:10

I have a Wednesday off and love it because it makes both home and work more manageable bitesize chunks. It's great for appointments and running errands etc as most people tend to do Mon/Fri.

The only downside is my work tend to want to do a lot of meetings midweek, but to be fair, they aren't ones I need to be at (just expected to be visible).
